Show #578
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 12th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
WORLD PREMIER: BYTON INTRODUCES THE PRODUCTION M-BYTE
"It looks like an SUV, but if you ask the folks say Byton, they'll tell you it's the worlds first SIV, or "Smart Intuitive Vehicle". Whatever you call it, today, at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Byton formally introduced the production version of their first vehicle, the M-Byte. " says Tom at InsideEVs "The M-Byte will launch in early 2021, and initially be limited to the Chinese market. However, sometime in the first half of 2021, Byton plans to begin exporting the M-Byte to the US, and European markets. They plan to be a global brand, and understand that they only get one shot at the launch, and are willing to wait a couple more months to make sure the M-Byte is absolutely ready for customer deliveries. The M-Byte will be offered in rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive configurations. It will also have two battery options. The standard battery is 72 kWh (usable), which Byton claims will offer a driving range of 250 miles. There's also an optional 95 kWh battery (also usable capacity) which Byton claims gives the M-Byte a 323 mile driving range."
Meanhwhile Auto Express confirms: "The new all-electric Byton M-Byte SUV will be sold in right-hand drive in the UK. Its standout feature is a spectacular 48-inch curved OLED 4k display which runs right across the width of the dashboard - and is controlled via two additional screens, one of them mounted on a fixed steering wheel hub. Byton’s Chief Technical Officer, David Twohig, said the company is targeting comfort and refinement instead of chasing after performance EVs. The car will feature conventional steel springs and dampers, and it will not be offered with air suspension. The M-Byte will cost from around €45,000 in Europe, but no specs or prices have been revealed for UK editions."

COX AUTOMOTIVE INVESTS INTO RIVIAN: JOINS FORD, AMAZON, OTHERS
"Cox Automotive controls prestigious brands like Kelley Blue Book, Autotrader, and Manheim, but it will also be part of another one: Rivian." says RivianChat.com: "The company says it is due to a “unique approach to building an electrified future” and a “commitment to environmental change.” But the real reason is probably only one: Rivian seems to be a pretty good investment. Amazon and Ford realized that and put more money in the company: $700 million and $500 million, respectively. The intriguing aspect is that Cox Automotive has always taken care of the automotive chain after the car production is complete. In other words, it deals with selling, servicing and evaluating vehicles. This is probably their first move into production, even if not in a direct fashion."

VOLVO POLESTAR EXEC SAYS TESLA IS WAY AHEAD IN TERMS OF EFFICIENCY
"While Tesla is far from perfect in many ways, we appreciate when a company like Volvo realizes the Silicon Valley automaker's strengths, is willing to outwardly admit them, and then make plans to follow suit." reports InsideEVs: "director of development at Polestar UK Ian Collins mentioned Tesla at a conference in Norway. This is surely not the first time that Volvo / Polestar has brought Tesla to light or even touted the Silicon Valley automaker. Remember, following Polestar 1, the company specifically talked to a Tesla Model 3 rival in the Polestar 2."
Ian Collins: "Tesla has been active in developing its own technology, especially with regard to energy efficiency. There they are far ahead of everyone else. It’s an area that we have to continue to work harder to take back Tesla. We have respect for them as a competitor. We will compete for design, what we offer to customers and technological advances. With technological advances, we not only think about the driveline, but also other parts of the car. I could have pointed out some weaknesses at Tesla that we address in our product. But I won’t."

ELECTRIFY AMERICA CHARGES PORSCHE TAYCAN
"Just last week, Electrify America and Porsche made history together. During the official launch of the Porsche Taycan on September 4, 2019, Electrify America (EA) got to show off the incredible capability of its DC fast-charging network." according to InsideEVs: "The Taycan made a 250-mile journey to Niagara Falls, during which it hooked up to EA's network at its Bloomsburg, PA station and charged at an impressive 270 kW. This is the quickest fast-charging speed to date when it comes to passenger EVs. According to the press release, the Taycan charged from 5 percent to 80 percent. It did so in just 22.5 minutes. The release explains that Electrify America and Porsche North America had this planned ahead of time and did prior testing to assure that the results were possible. With such charging speeds becoming a reality, yet another roadblock to EV adoption will soon become a thing of the past."
