Show #581

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 15th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

ELECTRIFY CANADA BREAKS GROUND ON FIRST HPC SITE

"The Canadian arm of Volkswagen’s dieselgate subsidiary Electrify America has broken ground for the construction of the country’s first high power charger that Electrify Canada intends to install. It is one of a planned total of 32." reports Electrive: "The ground-breaking ceremony took place at Toronto Premium Outlets, a shopping district in Ontario and the first initiative from Electrify Canada. Lorie-Ann Roxburgh, acting president and CEO, Volkswagen Group Canada considers the location the “perfect choice” due to “the millions of shoppers Toronto Premium Outlets attracts each year and the variety of existing amenities”. The high power charging station supports CCS and CHAdeMO charging and will deliver electricity at up to 350 kW to electric vehicles that can handle that rate. Besides, 50kW charging is supported. The Volkswagen subsidiary also says it will be the first in the country to implement the ISO Plug&Charge standard that will allow drivers to pay for charging just by plugging their vehicles in, without the need for a credit card or smartphone app."

WATCH PORSCHE TAYCAN ROLL OFF THE PRODUCTION LINE

"Porsche didn't wait long and started the production of the Taycan punctually on September 9, right after the unveiling." reports InsideEVs: "Cars and components are produced at Porsche's main site in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen in Germany. According to the almost 30-minute long video, which includes body shop, paint shop, component production and the final assembly, the new facilities at the plant are highly automated. Employees (there were 1,500 new jobs created solely for the Taycan at Zuffenhausen) pay a lot of attention to details and quality control."

PORSCHE PROMISES WORLD-BEATING HYPERCAR WITH HELP FROM RIMAC

"Dr. Stefan Weckbach, Porsche’s head of EV projects, sat down with the Australian website Motoring for a roundtable interview at the Frankfurt Motor Show. There he talked about battery tech, Porsche’s improved relationship with Rimac, and an upcoming electric hypercar." according to Motor1.

He said: "Our target is always, no matter what car we’re doing, to have the sportiest car in the segment. I’m pretty sure solid-state batteries are going to be the next step. I think there’s going to be a technology step in lithium-ion batteries within the next few years. So there’s different ideas and discussions ongoing and there will definitely be a next Porsche hypercar in the market, but I cannot tell you today when [it will be], and what the technology of it would be. If it’s all-electric it might be an approach… might be a Porsche motor as well."

TESLAS ARE EXCLUDED FROM SAFEST CARS LIST: THEY DON'T CRASH ENOUGH

"Folksam is a Swedish insurance company that publishes research about the safest cars in that country since 1983. This year, they analyze the damages people suffer in car accidents on 324 models and determined which were less likely to harm their passengers – and which required smaller amounts of money for premiums. No Tesla was included in the list. The reason is that Tesla cars did not crash enough." says InsideEVs: "The Model 3 was the tenth best selling model there in July, with 453 cars, which will make 2019 be a record."

QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS

GENE RUBIN

In December 2012, I was fueling my Honda Civic one morning headed for UCLA Medical Center where my girlfriend was being treated for, and ultimately died from AML leukemia. She and many other children from her neighborhood contracted the same leukemia. There was a suspect oil refinery very close by.  I had been hearing about the Tesla Model S, and at that moment, I decided I would have nothing to do with harming other people’s children. Even though the Tesla was 4 times the price of any previous car I had ever bought, I made the plunge. I have happily not bought gas since February 2013. My current wife and my son also drive EV’s, all powered by the sun.

DAVID PARTINGTON

When I first started getting into EVs, the ‘lightbulb moment’ that really made me stop and think was when I realised just how our city streets will soon be transformed by reduced emissions and noise…. as EV enthusiasts we can't help but get excited about how much fun it is to drive an EV, but EVERYONE, not just drivers, and in particular children, will benefit from reduced emissions and noise. When you also factor in reduced traffic from car-sharing and other electric E-mobility developments like E-bikes, our city streets  will truly be transformed. I can’t wait - bring it on !

STEPHEN MURDOCH

My light bulb moment was about four months ago when I saw the Fully Charged episode about the Rivian EV's. I want one. But it's going to be a bit of a wait to get them in Australia.

DAVID NYE IN BRISBANE

The lightbulb moment for me was when we were  visiting a small country town in Queensland years ago and a total stranger pulled up beside us in an early Model S. I was admiring the car and asking questions when he said would you like a lap of the block?

Needless to say, I said yes, and wow, 100% amazing. I was instantly converted, and have wanted a Tesla ever since.

DAFYDD CHEUNG

While watching Red Dwarf one night, I stumbled on the info that Robert Llewelyn had a channel of his own. I had a look at a few episodes, mainly regarding solar and other renewables. I became hooked very soon. I went back to the first one and viewed.

DARREN BYRD

My light bulb moment happened after we switched to an all EV household. We have 3 EVs (Tesla X and 3 primary and a Smart Electric for commuting)  but just two drivers. I have to move cars around in the driveway every now and then. It is so much more peaceful and zero waste starting an EV and moving it a few feet as compared to an ICE which would be super polluting as it would be a cold engine. My understanding with ICE cars is the short runs on a cold engine are bad for the oil and gas. Electrons don't care. Hope you're feeling better.

TUDOR COSTIGAN

I was lucky enough to go to Walt Disney World 20 years ago, which has a ride now called Test Track in the Epcot theme park. At the time it was sponsored by GM, so as you came out of the ride there were various GM cars on show … one of which was electric. This caught my imagination, but I had to wait 18 more years (during which GM scrapped its cars and electric cars started from scratch again) to be able to afford a Zoe(40kwh). Hopefully not a further 18 years to get to a longer range larger car!

ROB CRAWFORD

Mine was the first time I saw Elon Musk unvail the Tesla Model 3. I was so impressed with the car, and Elon's haltingly explanation of this next gen EV. The crowd and the spectacle of it all was exciting, I really got into the whole presentation, which normally I'm never affected by such things. I was hooked.
