Show #588
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 22nd September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
Welcome to the Patreon family new supporters of the show...

Adam Zempa: "I have been listening to your show every morning during my workout for the last 3 weeks (430 am). Granted most will say my choice of workout listening material is a bit odd, but I find it enjoyable and informative. I got to say you have really turned me on to the ev concept. I am not in the market for an ev but am interested in learning more about the ev market. Thanks for what you do and please continue with bringing us the news in the morning, afternoon or evening wherever we are in the world. Cheers"
Email from Kristof Lambrecht: "I love the show and i know you already exclude hybrids without a plug. Hover the show is called EV news daily and as an EV enthusiast i don't consider a plugin hybrid an EV. could you please consider giving less attention to plugin hybrids and focus more on pure EV’s. As EV driver or EVcurious I’m not interested in anything with a combustion engine. I have this on my mind already for some time but today in one show you talked about the placentas having particles inside but you also spent a lot of time on the superb hybrid. Maybe an idea for question of the week if you want the opinion from a broader group."
CAR FREE DAY IN LONDON
In an introduction from Fredrik Hjelm he says: “Responsible for the deaths of more than 790,000 people a year – and a staggering 8.8 million worldwide – breathing in filthy exhaust and particulate pollution can knock up to three years off the lifespan of the average European.
Unsurprisingly, urban dwellers are most at risk from vehicular air pollution. Cities occupy 3% of the global land mass but account for a staggering 75% of carbon emissions, much of this from the transport sector. In London alone, two million people – including more than 400,000 children – are living in areas that exceed legal limits for air pollution. In fact, air pollution in the UK capital accounts for an average reduction in life expectancy of 1.5 years. The average reduction in life expectancy attributed to deadly urban pollution rises to an average of 1.6 years in France and 1.9 years in Italy. In Germany, pollution knocks a shocking 2.4 years off the average resident’s life. One way local authorities are attempting to curb these troubling death rates is to encourage people to leave their cars at home, removing the source of pollution. "
Car Free Day on Sunday, 22 September 2019 is an opportunity for London to showcase global leadership in these areas, and to support local communities across the city to implement their own visions for improved public health, place-making, and mobility. Themes raised in the organisation and execution of Car Free Day align with London’s international leadership ambitions on urban environmental protection, sustainable development, and urban design.
From the London Evening Standard: "Earlybird Londoners flocked to Tower Bridge for an 8am mass yoga session, as the capital’s central landmark shut to traffic until 7pm. Photos on social media show revellers enjoying some wholesome “sunrise” meditation, stretching across the iconic bridge to salute the start of the “green festival”. More than 16 miles (27km) of streets have been shut for the city-wide event, which the Mayor of London has named Reimagine."
US STATES FIGHT BACK TO REDUCE EMISSIONS DESPITE TRUMP
"California and 22 other US states have now filed lawsuits against the Trump administration, who is trying to deny them the right to set their own – higher – emissions standards. California’s Governor Gavin Newsom has also just signed two laws to tighten emission standards for trucks and other high-emission vehicles." reports Carrie at electrive: "In the latest counter move, New York, Los Angeles and the District of Columbia have joined the 20 other states to sue the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for its most recent legislation to force states to lower emissions standards. After Trump announced via Twitter that he would revoke California’s legal right to make its own emissions targets, the US governmental Environmental Protection Agency and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration accordingly assembled the “One National Program Rule.” This rule makes good Trump’s promise of revoking California’s Clean Air Act, as well as scaling back emissions targets set by his predecessor, Barack Obama. This is now being challenged by the 23 states in court."

VW GOLF VIII TO GET SECOND PLUG-IN HYBRID VERSION BESIDES GTE
"The eighth-generation Golf is about to show up, but we already know how it will look. What is missing is the price and interior pictures, apart from technical specifications. " according to InsideEVs: "The British magazine Autocar discovered it will have two options instead of only the GTE. Frank Welsch, VW’s board member for research and development, told them so. That is an entirely new offer from the company. The only options you had to plug your Golf to a power socket were the GTE and the e-Golf. With the lower output and the regular trim, we expect the new plug-in hybrid to be a cheaper option than these other two ever were."

BMW LAUNCHES EV BATTERY PACK PRODUCTION IN THAILAND
Here's a story I missed earlier in September: "BMW Group Thailand is marking another historic milestone with the inauguration of a local high-voltage battery production plant in partnership with the DRÄXLMAIER Group, one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers and a partner of BMW Group since 1966. BMW Group Thailand launched the local assembly lines in July 2019 at the DRÄXLMAIER Group plant. Equipped with a strong grasp of battery production skills, the staff will work on battery cells provided by a supplier in the Asian region along with other imported parts – such as aluminum housing, electronics, and cables – to roll out high-voltage batteries that meet BMW Group’s world-class standard and are in full compliance with Thailand’s local content requirement regulation. Final batteries will then be transported to Plant Rayong for the production of the entire range of BMW 5 Series Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles, which has been in operation since July 2019. "
QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS
From ANders: I’m actually boarding the plane for Germany where, among other things, I’m going for a 1,000 mile EV road trip in an e-Tron rented from NextMove. Two things make it a dream trip. First, the fact that EV rentals are becoming more practical. Second, that this is the third of a trifecta of EV road trips I’m taking in California, China, and Germany, to compare the charging infrastructure & experience in each place as well as real time emissions."
PHILIPPE CALVE: "I dream about flying to California with my family (carbon compensated) and bring back my brand new Tesla Model Y to the east coast of Canada, using free Supercharging, and not a single drop of Dino Juice!"
TIM JAMES: "Short term my Australian dream trip is the east to west traverse of Australia. Byron bay, NSW to Steep point, Western Australia, approximately 4000km. Long term dream trip is the continental circumnavigation of the globe. Australia through to Indonesia, Malaysia Vietnam, Etc etc, through to Vladivostok, container ship to Alaska to Argentina, then back up to Canada to Greenland, I think you’re getting the picture."
DAVID NYE: "My dream EV road trip in Australia would be a full lap of the country. About four separate people, including two women that I know of, have done this in Tesla’s already, but it’s still something I’d love to do. Cairns to Adelaide is easy, and Brisbane to Adelaide easier still and can be all via Tesla Supercharger, but beyond that it does become significantly more difficult. However it would be a great challenge and I think would make a terrific trip."

I always wished to do the entire Vietnamese coast as a road trip, Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and it would be easy to do this in a gas power car or on a bike. But part of me wishes to wait, help the development of E mobility in Vietnam and be one of the first people to do it on or in an E Vehicle.
ARUNNING66
Route 66 for sure
TAZZMAN
My dream road trip travel across Canada in a 2014 Rav4 EV. It is self charging if I plug it in.
PAUL CARNALL
My favourite road trip would be the Scottish 500. All around the coast of Scotland. Hopefully next year in my leaf 40 kWh tekna 😎
NEIL
QOTW My dream EV roadtrip is to drive form outside Maidstone in Kent to just outside Salisbury in Wiltshire.
The reason is that will mean my Model 3 has arrived.
ZOBEID
My top choice is US Highway 1, the amazing "Overseas Highway" that connects the Florida Keys, all the way to Key West at the very end. There's not many places in the world where you cruise down the highway and watch dolphins at the same time. There's even a Tesla Supercharger station right around the halfway point. I have another sobering reason to make the trip, though. With rising sea levels, the Florida Keys will be among the first parts of the USA to go underwater. See it while you can, folks!
