Show #595
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 29th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Where it all started, with Kristof Lambrecht
I love the show and i know you already exclude hybrids without a plug. Hover the show is called EV news daily and as an EV enthusiast i don't consider a plugin hybrid an EV. could you please consider giving less attention to plugin hybrids and focus more on pure EV’s.
PETE GLASS
[edited highlights] 1] Prime focus of course BEVs. 2] Yes to left field EVs ‘occasionally’, scooters, push-bikes, motor-bikes, vans, buses, garbage trucks, excavators, ships etc. – but carefully rationed, when the story really is a good one [good = price, capability, delivery and not vapourware]. 3] PHEVs and RExs: ‘handle with care’ avoid anything that smells of a compliance car!
ASEER
I would say not only should you still cover Hybrid/PHEV in your podcast as well as BEV but actually it might be best way to engage with those who are ‘EV curious’ as I was and because of your Podcast I bought a Ioniq Hybrid and met up with Oxford EV at EVs in the park and directly because of this I will be test driving the MG ZS EV.
So to be clear you have steered my choices and it wasn’t because I didn’t know that diesel / petrol was bad but maybe because a car costs a lot of money (well it is for me) and played it safe and my reference previously was read motoring magazines that were obvious heavily biased.
AMY MACPHERSON
I personally am interested in ALL things renewable energy and clean tech. So, I have no issue hearing about hybrids, bikes, solar panels etc. Ps I live in PEI Canada and drive a 2018 Bolt and Love it!! We are also installing our second solar system next week
MATT PISCIONE
I think you nailed the format of the podcast. Like you have said before, a full EV isn't for everyone just yet, so keeping people aware of their plug-in hybrid options is necessary. Plus the additional information about other advancement in the clean energy industry is fascinati
MARK GARNETT
Keep Main focus on EVs. Sure include other electric (bikes, planes, trains, scooters). Include some Plugin hybrid esp if good EV range. Defiantly keep range extenders.
RICHARD CHAPMAN
I wanted to say that I completely agree that you should still talk about Hybrids. here in Western Australia we only have one Supercharger and it's a whopping 1,672 miles to the next one in South Australia. There aren't even any in the Northern Territory or Tasmania. Outside of the South West of Western Australia we have to rely on AC charging, but even with 22kW on-board charging in my Model S it's severely limiting and makes mainstream adoption unlikely. We've done long trips but it can be a challenge. For places where there's no fast DC charging network (still most of the planet) the perfect car would be a Tesla with a small petrol range extender so that you know you can go absolutely anywhere and only use petrol when you had no other choice.
LISA ALLEN
The only hybrids we should be talking about are plug-ins with at least 40+ range (Honda Clarity, the late Chevy Volt 😔) That range covers your daily commuting and helps those folks nervous about full EVs get their feet wet. Maybe cover bikes ince a week
BRUNO ARRIOLA
Plug-in hybrids should definitely be a part of the show. I drive a Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid and more than 90% of my total miles are 'electric', the gas engine is only used for longer weekend road trips that only happen a few times a year.
The battery size of a plug-in hybrid is significantly smaller than a regular EV and yet it covers the daily commute and needs of most people out there.
TIM MADLER
First time emailer, long time listener. I think you should talk about anything you want to. Anything that is better than transportation powered by ice engines.
LARS
Hybrids, even the plug-in ones, are in many ways gateway tech that serve only the purpose of prolonging the life of fossil fuel burning vehicles and undermine the validity a pure electric only vehicle.
Lars - Tesla para Todos
Eduard Pertíñez
I think you are doing excellent as you do. PHEV’s seem the enemy nowadays but... what would happen if they are forced to have a light that informs everybody what kind of energy are they running on? This way they could enter clean areas without everybody thinking they cheat.
STUART HANNAH
Whilst I think so called 'self charging Hybrids' are really yesterdays news and could be ignored, I think for high mileage drivers like myself the plug in Hybrid is still a sensible solution and worth bringing to peoples attention.
My office is 35 miles from home and my Optima PHEV gets me there in full E.V mode all the way including a short stretch of motorway at 70MPH. I plug it in on its granny lead whenever possible, making my whole 70 mile round trip a pure E.V one.
KYLE HODGSON
So, perhaps like you, I'm excited about all of it. Loved Fully charged's shows on ferries that run electric, trains that run on solar, and pipstrel's trainer aircraft.
And, very recently my neighbor asked me about EV's and hybrids. They weren't ready to go full EV due to budget constraints- and, yes, I described just how much lower running costs are.
DUNCAN ARMOUR
I am interested in:
pukka electric cars, vans, lorries, motor-bikes
in-wheel motors
battery tech
solar
advances in charging
company successes / challenges, financial news
corporatocracy dirty tricks to oppose new energy, slow the transition from fossil fuels
environmental news
home energy things (like vertical bore ground-source heat pumps - Source Energy, like electricity storage to hot water - Sunamp)
LUKE MCCARTHY
Let's talk about the exciting future of EVs not the past.
Also interested in electric bikes (vs motor bikes) and any general battery improvements or tech that takes our mobility away from fossil fuels.
Orjan Nilsen
Trondheim, Norway
Agree that its no point in talking too much details about hybrids. Relevant (big) news is of course OK, like if Toyota decided to expand their Plug-In Hybrid program!!! I laugh every time you say there is no such thing as a self charging hybrid!
GARY, SOUTHEAST U.S.
The short answer is no the podcast should not be only about EVs.
Now for the "why" - because many of us live in areas where the charging infrastructure is likely years away from allowing almost non-stop long range travel. Also the price for long range pure EV cars still need to come down some for the average person to afford.
PAUL COSMAN
I would like to hear only about all electric mobility like cars, bikes, planes, boats, buses, and trains. With the critical environmental problem we have at the moment hybrid is not a good solution.
I currently have a 2014 Tesla P85D
and a 2013 Nissan Leaf as my daily driver.
NICK SCOTT
I would love to hear more news about BEVs and less about PHEVs. Anything with an ICE seems like a relic and as someone who hopes to make the switch to an EV in the next few months, I'm mostly interested in hearing about affordably priced BEVs.
NICO JANSEN
Greatings from Belgium. As for qotw I would say to focus on full EVs but also report now and than on plug-in hybrids that can do 50km or more on EV power, covering a short commute.
I also like hearing about battery news and bikes, motorcycles, planes and boats, as long as they are zero emission.
DAN FROM CANADA
please keep mentioning PHEVs. Currently, some people like my family just cannot afford a pure EV that fits our needs. We have a short commute, but on occasion, we must drive long distances (including in -20C) without stopping. We also need significant cargo room, and our budget is tight. After much thought, we recently bought a 2019 Hyundai Ioniq PHEV.
MARTY YOUNG
I believe it's important to continue discussing plug-in hybrids on your podcast because they represent an important transition towards full battery-electric vehicles for many people. I'm a perfect example of this. I purchased a 2016 Chevy Volt earlier this year because I wanted to enter the world of EVs, but felt that a full BEV wouldn't be able to meet my needs because I occasionally make longer out-of-town trips.
