Show #623

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 27th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Hi to Jon: “Hi, you've been talking alot about how ev's wil be more available after 01.01.20, this seems to be very true! All of the people who have ordered a e tron 50 in Norway have been told that the car has been delayed because of the test date for wltp has been poursponed from week 45 to week 49 insuring that no etron 50's get delivered untill after new year. Probably just to get a lesser c02 penalty next year. Cheap move by Audi since there are 50's that have already come off the assembly line. My order entered production earlier this week.”

Thank you to LEE BROWN for becoming an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER. And thank you to CHARLES FOX for becoming a PRODUCER.

TESLA SOLAR ROOF V3 REAL QUOTE SHOWS PRICE DROPPED BY 40%

"Electrek obtained an updated Tesla Solar Roof quote from V2 to V3, and it shows that the price of the solar roof tiles went down by as much as 40% with the new generation." says Fred at Electrek today talking about one of their readers: "For a 9.45 kW system on a 1,862-square-foot roof, Tesla was charging him $64,634 for the solar roof, along with $10,050 for a Powerwall, and another $10,630 for roof and site repairs. That’s a total of just over $85,000 all in. The homeowner ended up not ordering the system, but Tesla has now updated the quote following the launch of Solar Roof V3, and it’s now much cheaper. Tesla is now listing the same solar roof system at $38,266 instead of $64,634 — a 40% reduction in price — and the total is down to $54,866:"

BORGWARNER EV TECH SHOWS UP IN ARIEL NOMAD EV DEMONSTRATOR VEHICLE

BorgWarner, a company engaged in electrification on various fronts, unveiled an interesting new electric demonstration vehicle, which happens to be a high-voltage buggy. Meet the Ariel Nomad EV, an Ariel Nomad converted to all-electric drive" reports InsideEVs: "The Ariel Nomad EV is equipped with two High-Voltage Hairpin (HVH) 250 electric motors and eGearDrive gear sets (each one independently controlling a rear wheel) and a 30 kWh battery pack."

BorgWarner says: ""A benefit of the vehicle’s electrified powertrain is its improved steering response made possible through torque vectoring. This feature allows both forward motion and regenerative braking, delivering a dynamic and controllable driving experience. Another key technology is BorgWarner’s thermal-management system, which circulates coolant via an electric pump through the inverters and battery pack. The liquid-cooled, 350V 30kWh pack delivers peak power of 200kW."

FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC LEXUS TO LAUNCH IN 2020

"Toyota Motor’s (7203.T) Lexus will launch its first all-battery electric vehicle next year, as the luxury brand races to market a battery-operated car amid growing competition to develop zero-emissions vehicles, the head of the brand said on Wednesday." according to a Reuters article: "At the unveiling of a concept model of a futuristic EV hatchback ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show, he added that the goal is for sales of Lexus electric vehicles, including battery electrics and gasoline hybrids, to outpace sales of the luxury brand’s gasoline vehicle models by 2025."

TESLA MODEL Y BASHED BY AUTO VETERAN

"The Tesla Model Y is expected to be the company’s highest-volume vehicle yet, with Elon Musk noting during the recently-held third-quarter earnings call that he expects the crossover to outsell Model S, Model X, and Model 3 combined. Former GM vice chair Bob Lutz, on the other hand, has some doubts, and a lot of that has to do with the way the Model Y looks." says Simon at Teslarati.

Lutz: "The Model 3 continues to sell well. But the Model Y, I think it’s terminally ugly. I don’t know who’s gonna buy that. It’s another one of these humpback things like the Model X. It’s neither a sport utility nor a sedan, and to the extent it sells, I don’t think it’s going to break into a new segment. I think the sales will be largely substitutional to the Model 3"

NSW UNVEILS PLAN TO SWITCH SYDNEY’S 8,000 BUSES TO ALL-ELECTRIC

"The NSW Government is seeking proposals to shift Sydney’s entire 8,000 strong bus fleet to an all-electric fleet in a landmark decision that marks one of the first tangible policies towards the state’s goal of reaching zero net emissions by 2050." according to thedriven.io: "NSW transport minister Andrew Constance says he will seek new contracts for the supply and operation of Sydney’s public bus system, a move that will open the door to electric buses and substantially reduce the environmental footprint of Sydney’s public transport network. Successful electric bus shuttle services have already been in operation at the Sydney and Brisbane airports, which confirmed the cost and reliability benefits of electric buses over traditional diesel buses. Electric buses represent an enormous potential for reducing the environmental footprint of the Australian transport sector, as well as providing a boost to Australia’s fledgling manufacturing sector."

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

RAJEEV NARAYAN

If the price was right I would strongly consider it, My Chevy Bolt is 2 years old now and has 61K miles on it and I have not once DC fast charged it. Many people may simply need a car to drive around town and don't need DC fast charging.

SACHA

For frequent long distance trips, there’s no doubt  CCS or superchargers are a must but I think different people have different needs and as such not having CCS and just using AC charging might work for people with houses . If it means getting a vehicle for 10k or so it might be worth it (although is CCS circuitry really that expensive that excluding it is really worth it for manufacturers  ?) When considering resale it’s a different story however - a car with both AC and CCS has more prospective buyers and might retain its value better . Of course any EV is better than a fossil powered car so no complaints here either way!

BILL POLLOCK

As you likely know our North American domestic Electrical service is limited to 110v on One pole or 220V on Two poles.  Typically we run only 30  amps on our 220V circuits but can go as high as 50amps for high-draw appliances (an induction stove for example) Our Level 2 chargers are 40 amps max, so our highest Level 2 charge is about 8kW. That's an overnight charge every time.

So...no, I will not buy an EV without 50kW DC level 3 minimum.

JOHN HARCOMBE

I do not care what charger plug car has as  on average people only do 1 or 2 long trips per year where they have to charge away from home charger.

The major issue that UK Government should be sorting out with Europe and rest of countries now before massive numbers of ev being sold is have one standard high power charging plug like 500kw that is bi-directional, meaning grid to vehicle and vehicle to grid.

I see Japan CHAdeMO's and China GBT looking at a combined charger plug standard which are backward compatible.

MARK BUCKINGHAM

Kia ora  Martyn, even though I have a Kona, yes just ac charging is fine depends on use case.

Also more importantly in 3 hours England is playing the All Blacks in Japan to get into the final and then of course to win the world cup!!
