Show #677
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 25th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
VOLVO SAYS XC40 RECHARGE SEES STRONG INITIAL DEMAND
"Volvo is launching its first all-electric vehicle, the XC40 Recharge P8 AWD, later this year, and has just opened order books in certain markets." reports John at Autoblog: "It’s the first step toward the goal of having battery electrics make up a full half of Volvo’s global car sales by the year 2025, with the remainder being hybrids. Volvo claims the XC40 Recharge is already garnering strong demand from would-be customers. According to Volvo, it has already taken “several thousands of firm orders” for its electric crossover, with “tens of thousands” more showing a “keen interest.” In Europe, the XC40 Recharge made up 20% of configurator builds in Europe in Q4 of last year. It has a 78-kWh battery pack, which is good for 200 miles of driving on a single charge. Volvo says it can charge up to 80 percent in 40 minutes on a 150-kW fast charger. Two electric motors provide a total of 402 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque. Volvo states a 0-60 mph sprint of just 4.7 seconds."
"US consumers can now reserve the XC40 with a $1,000 refundable deposit on the company website. The first customer deliveries of the XC40 Recharge P8 are scheduled to begin later this year." says electrek: "The XC40 Recharge P8 is Volvo’s first pure-electric offering, but the company is promising a “family” of EVs. The XC40 Recharge P8 is based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), a platform co-developed within the Geely Group."
And to coincide with the news, from Jalopnik: "The electric SUV market is getting crowded with Volvo confirming a previously announced electric variant of the upcoming third-generation XC90. "Volvo plans to launch one new EV each year through 2025, including the XC90 which will come out in late 2022. The mid-size SUV will be made at the company’s factory in South Carolina. A few weeks ago, Volvo said it had plans to build a battery plant adjacent to the factory to supply future EVs."

CANOO OPENS WAITLIST FOR WORLD’S FIRST SUBSCRIPTION-ONLY ELECTRIC VEHICLE
Canoo, the Los Angeles based company creating electric vehicles made for membership, has officially opened its waitlist, dubbed The First Wave. The waitlist is for the company’s first vehicle, simply called the canoo, and is free to join and open to everyone.
Canoo’s membership will be flexible, with a single all-inclusive monthly payment that offers the vehicle, maintenance, registration, access to insurance and charging on a month-to-month basis.#
Canoo has developed a proprietary “skateboard” architecture, directly housing the batteries and electric drivetrain. All of Canoo’s vehicles will share the same underpinning and different cabins or “top hats” can be married on top to create unique vehicles.
The Canoo has an approximate range of 250 miles (EPA rating) and can reach an 80% charge in less than 30 minutes.
2021 MASERATI GRANTURISMO AND 2022 GRANCABRIO
"The new-generation 2021 Maserati GranTurismo and 2022 GranCabrio will be the first all-electric models from the historic Italian car-maker." according to carsales.com.au: "That means this year’s all-new Maserati supercar will be launched at first with a conventional powertrain, or at least it will have a petrol engine under its bonnet.Maserati said its first EV powertrain will come with a distinctive signature sound. It said the ‘engine’ note of its ground-breaking new in-house zero-emissions drivetrain, which is now under development at its Innovation Lab in Modena, is now at the experimental stage. Maserati says it will acquire data from a series of road and track tests in various conditions to determine “the sound that will characterise the electric engine” due to power a range of future Maseratis. The first of these will be the redesigned GranTurismo coupe to be built in Turin from 2021"

EV INCREASE PREDICTED AS FLEET PERCEPTIONS SHIFT
Traditional barriers to the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), such as range and charging infrastructure, no longer fill fleets with anxiety, a new survey suggests. Instead, they have started to view EVs as a way to cut costs and emissions, and to be compliant with clean air zones (CAZs)" writes FleetNEws: "The EV Report 2020, powered by the EV Barometer, surveyed more than 300 fleet decision-makers, and held discussions with fleet managers at seven focus groups in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds and St Albans. It found that 59% of van fleets and 57% of car fleets operate vehicles in areas that have, or are planning to introduce, emissions regulations. The larger the fleet, the more likely it was to be impacted by a CAZ and some two in five fleets (42%), with more than 100 vans, say their introduction is the principal reason for going electric"
SWEDEN TO INVESTIGATE PHASING OUT FOSSIL FUELS
"The government of Sweden has launched an inquiry into how to phase out fossil fuels and how to ban the sale of gas-powered cars" says Interesting Enginnering.com: "The government of Sweden has announed that it will be appointing an inquiry that will offer proposals for how to implement a ban on the sale of new gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles as well as when to phase out fossil fuels in their entirety. The inquiry is expected to issue it final report by Febuary 1, 2021."
NEW DIESELS’ PARTICLE EMISSIONS SPIKE TO 1,000 TIMES NORMAL LEVELS IN TESTS
"New diesel cars’ pollution is peaking at more than 1,000 times their normal levels, tests of two top-selling vehicles show. The dangerous spikes in particles can instantly stress the heart and are a result of the cars cleaning their filters, which may occur in urban areas, last for up to 15km, and are effectively ignored by official emissions tests. More than 45 million cars carry these filters in Europe, causing a total of 1.3 billion filter cleanings a year." says a report from Transport and Environment released on 9th January 2020: "The Nissan Qashqai and Opel Astra, the second and fourth bestsellers in their segments respectively, were 32% to 115% over the legal limit for particles when they cleaned their filters in the independent tests. But a loophole means that the legal limit does not apply when filter cleaning occurs in official testing, meaning that 60-99% of regulated particle emissions from the tested vehicles are ignored. These ultrafine particles are not measured in official tests but are thought to be the most harmful to human health – as they penetrate deep into the body – and have been linked with brain cancer."
