Show #679

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 27th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Welcome to a new PATREON SUPPORTER JOHN

JAGUAR LAND ROVER CUTS 500 JOBS: IS FOCUS NOW ON ELECTRIFICATION?

"Jaguar Land Rover is going to cut some 500 jobs (about 10%) at its Halewood plant near Liverpool in the UK, as the facility will now work on two shifts (instead of three shifts) with an option for an extension of some workdays if demand is high." reports InsideEVs: "According to Bloomberg, the reason for that is a necessity to "to cut costs amid mounting spending on electric cars". On the other hand, Tata Motors (JLR parent company) explains that “This is about efficiency, not loss of volume." Thanks to the partnership with BMW, the new models might be equipped with BMW's drive units to limit development costs."

NISSAN E-NV200 CONVERSION

"‘Final mile’ delivery specialists in the UK, together with tradesmen and other operators working in urban areas, can now choose a competitively priced, fully electric van which offers up to twice the cargo volume of similarly sized competitors" according to MHW Magazine: "West Midlands-based Bevan Group has announced the signing of a landmark partnership agreement with conversion specialist Voltia, under which it has been awarded a licence to assemble and market the zero-emission Nissan-based vehicle in Great Britain and Ireland. The 2.2-tonne Nissan e-NV200 is ideally suited to ‘last mile’ delivery work in towns and cities. Voltia’s conversion features walk-in rear doors and offers a load volume of up to 8m3, which is virtually twice that of the standard e-NV200 – a variant with 6m3 cargo area is also available. It has a 580 kg payload capacity."

ELECTRIC SCOOTERS ARE A STEP CLOSER TO BECOMING ROAD LEGAL IN THE UK

"Electric scooters could soon be road-legal in the UK, as the government prepares to open a consultation, followed by trials in several cities. E-scooter trials have already taken place in London's Olympic Park, but this will be the first time you can take an electric scooter out on public streets." writes TechRadar: "Despite the number of people already using them for daily commutes, it's currently illegal to ride electric scooters on either roads or pavements in the UK. The UK seems likely to follow the example of Paris, where parking dockless e-scooters on pavements was made illegal, speeds were capped, and a strict age limit was enforced last year following hundreds of accidents and several deaths caused by careless riding."

TESLA COULD FOCUS MODEL Y DELIVERIES IN CANADA

"Tesla is about to start Model Y deliveries, and the automaker might want to focus early deliveries in Canada, especially in Quebec, where the generous EV incentives are going to change and affect Tesla buyers." says electrrek:" For Model 3, Tesla had to adapt its pricing structure in order to give its buyers access to the federal government $5,000 rebate at the purchase due to a limit on the price (MSRP). Since the Model Y is more expensive than the Model 3, buyers of the new electric SUV won’t have access to it. In Quebec, EV buyers have access to an even more generous $8,000 EV incentive, and the rule regarding the price of the vehicles is more forgiving than with the federal incentives. It results in most Model 3 and Model Y variants being eligible. However, the program is changing starting April 1 where the MSRP limit for the full $8,000 credit drops to $60,000:"

VOLKSWAGEN GROUP SOLD MORE THAN 140,000 PLUG-IN CARS IN 2019

Volkswagen Group significantly expanded its plug-in electric car sales in 2019, exceeding the level of 140,000 vehicles. That's an 80% improvement compared to 2018" reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "For comparison, Volkswagen brand noted over 80,000 sales (up 60%) and most of those were all-electric cars. The remaining 60,000 must be Audi and Porsche, as the other brands are just starting electrification projects. In 2020, Volkswagen Group should exceed 200,000 as besides the Volkswagen ID.3, there will be more Audi plugs-in, the Porsche Taycan, as well as support from SEAT and Škoda."

Whereas the prediction from VW themselves is highter, from CleanTechnica: "Volkswagen Group expects ~4% of its sales to be electric in 2020, and then expects the figure to climb up each year to more than 20% in 2025. That’s about 450,000 sales in 2020 across 16 or so models. It’s unclear how the model breakdown is expected to go in terms of sales volume, though. Given the brand, price, and marketing focus, I presume the ID.3 and ID.Crozz will carry a large portion of the sales on their shoulders"

PORSCHE TAYCAN SPORT TURISMO SPIED PLAYING IN THE SNOW

"Porsche is moving on plan with the development of the Taycan Sport Turismo as these new spy photos confirm. If you are unfamiliar with that moniker, it’s the stylish wagon-ish version of the Taycan electric vehicle, which is expected to debut in its final production form later this year." says Motor1.com: "Our spies tell us it’s been a fun day for Porsche’s test drivers as extensive drift maneuvers in the snow put a natural disguise on the vehicle’s rear end not letting us take a closer look at the details. Or, simply put, the engineers got some help from mother nature. The Panamera Sport Turismo’s zero-emission brother should debut before the year’s end together with the Taycan Cross Turismo version, which will feature a similar body shape but combined with rugged exterior design cues and a higher suspension. Both should go on sale as 2021 models early next year at the latest."

BMW 530E INDUCTIVE CHARGING PILOT PROGRAM

The BMW 530e inductive charging pilot program received the Green Car Journal’s Green Car Technology of the Year award. The Pilot Program allows participating BMW customers to test and provide valuable feedback on using wireless inductive technology to charge their BMW 530e plug-in-hybrid sedans, instead of having to plug the vehicle in using a wall-mounted charging box. BMW is the first automotive manufacturer to make this technology available to customers in the marketplace.

The pilot program began in Germany in 2018, and expanded to the U.S. in mid-2019. Available in the state of California for a small group of qualifying residential home customers, the program included a 36-month lease of a specially equipped 530e sedan and home installation of the inductive charging equipment.

BMW Wireless Charging consists of an Inductive Charging Station (GroundPad) and a secondary vehicle component (CarPad) fixed to the underside of the vehicle. The contactless transfer of energy between the GroundPad and CarPad is completed over a distance of around three inches. The inductive charging components generate a magnetic field, which allows for the safe transfer of energy with an efficiency rate of around 85%.

The system has a charging power of 3.2 kW, enabling the high-voltage batteries on board the BMW 530e to be fully charged in around three and a half hours.

GENESIS SET TO ENTER LUXURY EV MARKET

"Genesis, the fledgling Korean luxury brand, expects to bring its first all-electric model to market a bit more than two years from now, several company sources confirmed during the debut of the automaker’s first SUV, the GV80, in Miami Beach on Tuesday night." reports The Detroit Bureau: "There are several reason why, starting with the solid performance electric motors can deliver. Meanwhile, luxury buyers are expected to be less sensitive to the price premium for battery vehicles – though costs are expected to come down to the point where BEVs could reach parity with gas-powered vehicles by around 2023, according to a new study by the Boston Consulting Group."

https://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2020/01/genesis-set-to-enter-luxury-ev-market/

From CNN: “Today, Genesis sales are miniscule compared to these established luxury brands. Last year, it sold 21,000 cars in the United States. BMW sold more than twice as many of its 3-series sedan alone.  Genesis cars are not exactly cheap, but they tend to cost considerably less than directly competitive German luxury models. (Genesis said the price of the GV80 will be revealed closer to when it goes on sale in the US this summer.)

The interior, though, looks like the cabin of something far more expensive. It has clean lines, quilted leather and lots of shiny metal surfaces and wood trim. Genesis plans to soon add at least one more SUV to its lineup and an electric vehicle.”
