Show #688

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 5th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

ELECTRIFY AMERICA COMPLETES 400 EV CHARGING STATIONS

"Electrify America confirmed that they completed the installation of their first 400 EV charging stations only 20 months after starting the deployment" says Electrek: "They started deployment less than two years ago, and today, they confirmed that they have already achieved their initial goal of deploying 400 stations, including over 1,700 charge points. Brendan Jones, COO of Electrify America, confirmed the news to Electrek, but he clarified that while all the stations are deployed, some of them still need to be activated and are awaiting approval from the local electric utility. All of the company’s highway fast-charging stations are equipped to charge vehicles at up to 350 kW, even though most electric cars on the road today can’t receive that much power. The company says that they are planning for the future EV fleet as much as five years ahead. They also have 150 kW in urban areas for city charging."

BIGGEST EU TESLA CHARGE PARK YET PLANNED IN GERMANY

"Tesla’s largest fast-charging park in the EU will soon go online on a plot of land owned by bakery Roland Schüren at the Hilden motorway junction (A3/A46) near Düsseldorf." according to electrive: "According to local media reports, “on February 14th, a 16-pallet supercharger with a 1-megawatt transformer will initially go into operation there”. Tesla intends to build a total of 40 stalls of the latest generation V3 chargers with a peak output of up to 250 kilowatts at the Hilden intersection."

GM'S EV DAY

"General Motors will be hosting an "EV Day" on the 4th of March. The announcement came from President Mark Reuss during the company's Capital Markets Day presentation on Wednesday. Besides helping to communicate the extent of this monumental shift at the country's largest automaker, we expect to learn a few specifics about its future EV plans." says Domenick at InsideEVs: "While the near-term will bring a refreshed Bolt EV for 2021, and (hopefully) the rumored Bolt EUV (electric utility vehicle), GM's electric future well and truly gets underway when it starts to roll out product based on its "BEV3" program. This is where the focus, future product-wise, at least, will be during GM's EV Day next month. We already know that the new 2022 Hummer EV truck will be the first BEV3 vehicle to be produced, starting in the Fall of 2021"

EVS CONTINUE SALES SUCCESS IN JANUARY 2020 FIGURES

"The UK electric vehicle market continues to go from strength to strength, as the number of pure-electric cars tops the 100,000 mark in January 2020 - seeing registrations up more than 200% compared to last year." according to Chris at Next Green Car: "The latest set of statistics rom the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that more than 4,000 pure-electric cars were registered during the month. This figure, combined with more than 4,750 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars sold made January second best performing month in history in terms of electric vehicle market share at 5.9%. Total plug-in car registrations - pure-EVs and PHEVs combined - is now more than 273,000 units in the UK. Whilst still representing a relatively small proportion of the overall car market in the UK, it is clear that the demand is there from customers, as sales continue to grow as new models go on sale and greater numbers of EVs become available. Diesel sales continue to drop - -36% in January"

HERO’S NEW 53 MPH ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE

"Hero Electric has taken to the Auto Expo 2020 show to unveil its first electric motorcycle, the Hero Electric AE-47, among other new personal electric mobility vehicles." says Micah at Electrek: "The AE-47 was unveiled today with a listed top speed of 85 km/h (53 mph) generated from a 4kW (5.3 hp) continuous-rated rear hub motor. While that isn’t likely to make the AE-47 feel at home on the highway, it’s certainly sufficient as a light electric motorcycle for city use."

TESLA TO UTILIZE SIDE CAMERAS TO HELP DRIVERS BACK UP

@teslaownersSV Can we get the side cameras to show up when backing up?

@elonmusk Yes

Teslarati reports: "Tesla vehicles have eight cameras that practically serve as the eyes of the vehicle, giving it a 360-degree view of its environment. When backing up though, drivers rely only on the rearview camera and sensors to park. Being able to utilize the side cameras will give drivers a better view of any spots they want to back up into, thereby reducing annoying incidents of wheel rash, dings, or in some cases, dents."

AMAZON AND RIVIAN DISH DETAILS ON THEIR NEW ELECTRIC DELIVERY VAN

"Rivian may be best known for its upcoming R1T electric pickup truck, but Amazon may give the startup the most exposure yet. After detailing plans of a partnership between the online retail giant and the electric vehicle maker, the two surprised with plans to create a purpose-built electric van for Amazon deliveries." reports CNET: "On Tuesday, both companies gave us a closer look at what's going on behind the scenes to bring this package delivery vehicle to lifeThe cockpit will include a totally digital instrument cluster, central screen with Alexa built-in (obviously) and Amazon's logistics management. Drivers won't need any external devices for mapping and Alexa will handle all voice commands to keep workers from entering information manually. We'll first see the vans hit the road in 2021 with a deployment of 10,000. Then, a total of 100,000 of them will be on the streets delivering packages by 2030."

SHELL DOUBLES ULTRARAPID-CHARGING STATIONS IN GERMANY

"In addition to the already planned 50 HPC columns with 150 kW that Shell is building with the energy supplier EnBW, the oil company is now promising another 50 HPC columns in a second wave, apparently primarily in northern Germany." picks up electrive: "Shell, for example, took over the German battery manufacturer Sonnen in February 2019, the charging infrastructure specialist NewMotion in October 2018 and, at the beginning of the year, the US company Greenlots, which also focuses on this field. In mid-December, Shell installed the first HPC column in Germany at the filling station in Reutlingen."
