Show #693

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 10th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA CLUB SHINES AT LARGEST EAST COAST EV EVENT

"The adoption of electric cars has been growing at an experiential rate over recent years, and that growth was prominently on display at the recent EVs & Tea meetup, The local event, which was based in Miami, Florida, garnered national attention as a result of its larger than expected turnout." says EV Bite: " Rather than just meeting up at an empty parking lot, as is common with most EV events, the hosts provided structure and a list of activities. The event featured the ever-popular Starman as well as a scale model of the upcoming Tesla Cybertruck. In addition to these, multiple public discussions were held centered around electric vehicles and their infrastructure. Several notable EV personalities were there to answer questions and concerns from fans and skeptics alike. Tesla themselves brought a representative with a few cars and even Jaguar and Audi stopped by to show off the new I-PACEs and E-Tron."

PLANS FOR OPEL BATTERY FACTORY

"The carmaker Opel has set itself the goal of producing "the best, most efficient and most environmentally friendly battery cells" at the Kaiserslautern site. Not only an important day for Prime Minister Dreyer." says SWR.de: " Construction of the new production facility will begin in 2023 and the first section will go into operation in 2024. According to Lohscheller, up to half a million batteries for electric cars could be built in Kaiserslautern every year after the new plant was completed. The most important details about the planned battery plant in Kaiserslautern had been known since December. In addition to the plant in Kaiserslautern, there should be a second factory in France. The French battery manufacturer Saft and the Opel parent company PSA plan to invest a total of six billion euros in the two factories. The factory is funded by France, Germany and the EU with a total of 1.3 billion euros. That is why Federal Minister of Economics Altmaier traveled to Kaiserslautern. The said that the federal government would "participate with a considerable three-digit million amount". "I hope that we can specify the amount in the coming weeks.""

JAGUAR HALTS ELECTRIC SUV OVER BATTERY SHORTAGES

"Jaguar’s best-selling I-PACE electric car has a problem: it has run out of batteries." says The Times: "Jaguar is halting production of the £61,000 SUV at a factory in Graz, Austria, for a week from Monday next week because of a shortage of lithium-ion batteries. The I-Pace’s batteries are supplied by South Korean electronics giant LG Chem, which makes them at a factory in Wroclaw, Poland. Jaguar’s woes reflect car-makers’ struggles to meet surging demand for electric cars and slash emissions while relying on fragile supply chains. Jaguar sold about 18,000 I-Paces last year and it won the top prize at last year’s World Car of the Year awards. Ministers last week unveiled a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035."

THESE 10 CARS LOSE THE LEAST VALUE ONE YEAR AFTER DRIVING OFF THE LOT

The Tesla Model 3 leads the ranking with a loss in value of 5.5% ($2,529) in a year. ISeeCars' study notes: "Tesla Model 3 average new car price estimated by applying used car trim distribution to pre-rebate new car prices as of February 5, 2020."

There simply aren't many of them on the used market, and there are a large number of people who want one.

AIRSTREAM LOOKS TO ELECTRIFICATION FOR ITS FUTURE CAMPERS

"Airstream campers are some of the most recognizable shapes on the road. The company's aluminum-bodied trailers are super cool, and their design hasn't changed much over the past 90 years. Yet even with this focus on retro design, Airstream knows it has to adapt to the future." reports CNET Roadshow: " Airstream is actively working on tech that could incorporate an electric drivetrain into a camper.  Airstream is experimenting with mounting an electric motor on the trailer's axle, which could power the rear wheels and provide extra driving force while towing. Of course, there are a number of hurdles to overcome while developing this technology. The key objective is to make it so the trailer is never pushing up against the tow vehicle. The two entities need to work in harmony."

SWEDEN AMAZES WITH 31% PLUG-IN EV CAR MARKET SHARE IN JANUARY 2020

"The passenger plug-in electric car market in Sweden almost doubled, reaching its all-time highs in January 2020." picks up InsideEVs; "The number of registrations amounted to 5,153, about 94% more than a year ago, but more importantly, on an overall shrinking market (by 18%), the market share was an incredible 31%! It's now one of the hottest plug-in markets globally, as we rarely see market share above 10%."

EV Sales Blog  says: " the VW Passat GTE is back at the leadership, with the German midsizer already winning a comfortable distance from last year Best Seller, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, in #3, while the Kia Optima PHEV scored a record performance, with 486 registrations, allowing it to jump into the podium, in 2nd place."

MINI COOPER SE IS HERE

"MINI has finally tapped into the electric vehicle market with the new Cooper SE. It takes its juice from a 32.6 kWh battery that supports DC fast charging, boasting a 0-80 percent recharging time of only 35 minutes. Charging it up at home takes 4 hours and once it’s filled up, you’ll be able to travel for around 146-167 miles (235-270 km)." says Carscoops: "he MSRP is $29,900, excluding the $850 destination and handling charge. Mind you, with the federal tax credits and EV tax, you could pay as low as $17,900 for one – roughly the price of a mid-spec Ford Fiesta."

CITROEN TEASES ALL-ELECTRIC CAR, PLANS EV TREK ACROSS SAHARA

"Citroen has released a new video on its social media accounts listing all the ways electricity has changed our lives. At the end of the clip the company teases the front end of a model it promises will "democratise electric mobility" and will make its debut on February 27, European time." according to Car Advice: "The tagline at the end of the video places a great amount of emphasis on the letter Ë, suggesting it might used as part of a sub-brand for the brand's upcoming electric vehicles."

NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK

The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…

I’m thinking of driving to Italy, 1028 miles and 17 hours. Channel Tunnel to France, skirt the bottom of Switzerland, northern Italy past Milan and onto Pisa. What’s the longest EV road trip you’ve done or WOULD you do?
