Show #695
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 12th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
Professional, well researched, entertaining
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Martin is a professional DJ with a real passion for EVs. The podcast is always well researched, clearly takes many hours to script, record and post. It condenses all the most important news into 15 odd minutes. The only real problem - my commute is more like 30mins :) My biggest frustration - I...

Martin, have been a subscriber before U got to 100 episodes!! Have a background in renewable fuels since late 90’s but now feel EV is the better choice going forward (& have ordered a cybertruck to confirm this) & am impressed with the amount of EV infrastructure already in place in...

CANOO & HYUNDAI TO CO-DEVELOP EV PLATFORM
"The US American electric vehicle startup and the South Korean automotive giant have teamed up in an engineering partnership to develop electric vehicles. Canoo and Hyundai will co-develop an electric vehicle platform based on Canoo’s skateboard technology to be used for upcoming Hyundai and Kia EVs and PBVs (Purpose Built Vehicles)." writes electrive: "Canoo has made waves with their subscription-based EVs designed on a scalable skateboard platform for which they recently opened a waitlist. The company has put particular attention into their functional integration, which they say “reduces the skateboard size, weight and total number of parts, which ultimately provides more interior cabin space and a more cost-effective EV offering.” This kind of flexibility in design would allow for Hyundai to develop a rather large series of EVs."

THE NIKOLA MOTOR BADGER WILL HAVE 600 MILE RANGE
"Today, Nikola Motors unveiled a new electric truck, the Badger. The vehicle is still in the early stages of development, but the company is working on a battery electric version and a hydrogen fuel cell electric configuration that can also recharge its onboard battery from the grid. The Badger will hit the market with a 600 mile (965 km) range and a 0–60 mph time of 2.9 seconds." writes Kyle at Clean Technica: "The Badger is the result of years of work by the Nikola team, and according to CEO Trevor Milton, it is now ready to hit the market. the massive 160 kWh battery in the Badger brings new functionality to workers with a 15 kW power export outlet that will allow owners to use their truck to provide electricity to power their workday. That’s more than enough juice to run power tools, job lights, compressors, and the like."
TESLA IS BUILDING A PILOT BATTERY CELL MANUFACTURING LINE IN FREMONT
"If you needed more proof that Tesla is going to make its own battery cells, we’ve now learned that Tesla is building a pilot battery cell manufacturing line in Fremont and designing its own equipment to produce the cells." says electrek": Other job listings also show plans for Tesla to produce its own battery cells in Europe"

INNOVATIVE SOLUTION FOR ULTRA-FAST CHARGING ELECTRIC VEHICLES
E.ON and Volkswagen Group Components are giving a new impetus with the prototype of a new, flexible ultra-fast charging station that will be presented in Essen. By integrating a battery system, it will be possible to install ultra-fast charging stations almost anywhere and at significantly lower cost without civil engineering or mains connection.. To ensure that the battery installed in the charging station always has sufficient capacity, it is permanently fed by a conventional 16 to 63 ampere power connection. E.ON will operate the rapid chargers exclusively with green electricity. Updates, remote maintenance and billing of the charging points will be carried out via E.ON's central software platform.

SEAT CUPRA LEON PHEV HOT HATCH TEASED
"Following in Skoda’s footsteps, SEAT has officially announced it too will launch its own plug-in hybrid hot hatch (and wagon) versions of the recently unveiled Leon family car. Called the Cupra Leon, it will first be shown at its own launch event on February 20, before being unveiled to the public at the 2020 Geneva motor show." reports InsideEVs: "This particular model is not only the first performance PHEV in Spanish automaker’s history, but it’s the first hot Leon that no longer wears the SEAT badge. Its powertrain will be the same one that motivates the new Skoda Octavia RS plug-in hybrid, comprised of a 1.4-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor and drawing juice from a 13 kWh battery."

LACK OF SUPPLY IS SLOWING THE CORPORATE EV TRANSITION
"Major international companies are charging ahead on electric vehicles (EVs) to address the climate crisis, tackle air pollution and meet growing customer expectations – but they are increasingly confronted with a lack of vehicle supply says a new report by global non-profit The Climate Group." according to Smart-energy.com: "Five more companies have joined EV100 today from the UK, France, US and Denmark. The UK’s Lloyds Banking Group will convert its own commercial fleet of 12,000 vehicles and continue to install 83 charging sites at relevant locations for staff and customers. Zenith, independent leasing, fleet management and vehicle outsourcing business, will electrify all of the 48,000 vehicles in its fleet which it procures on behalf of its customers, as well as its own corporate fleet."
NISSAN'S COMBUSTION ENGINE 'LULLABY' HELPS KIDS NOD OFF IN ELECTRIC CARS
"Nissan has worked with sound engineers to create a 'lullaby' based on the sound of internal combustion engines to help kids nod off in near-silent electric cars like the new Nissan Leaf." says Tech Radar: "The resulting track, Nissan Leaf Dream Drive, is available free on all major music streaming services, including Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. Nissan found that parents often take young children on short drives at bedtime, using the rumble of the car's engine to help the little ones nod off. The low and mid frequencies have a particularly soothing effect."
GIGAFACTORY 4: TESLA APPLIES FOR STATE FUNDING IN GERMANY
"Tesla has submitted the expected application for subsidies to the state of Brandenburg for the construction of the Gigafactory 4 near Berlin. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier has now formulated “certain criteria” for a possible federal subsidy." says Laura at Electrive; "On the federal level, Minister of Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier had also promised Tesla State subsidies, this time concerning an earlier application to also build battery cells in Germany, although at a later stage. As Altmaier told the newspaper Welt am Sonntag, companies would have to “meet certain requirements regarding the sustainability and performance of the batteries” to receive government support."

BATTERIES: WE’RE NOWHERE NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE PRICE CURVES
Electrek says: "On a recent trip to Detroit, we spent a few minutes with Tim Grewe, GM’s director of battery cell engineering and electrification strategy. "The costs are coming down dramatically. We’re not anywhere close to the bottom. When we started [making EVs], we didn’t have the field data. So we were conservative with the batteries. The active material inside the cell was number one. But you still have to work on everything else."

NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK
The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…
I’m thinking of driving to Italy, 1028 miles and 17 hours. Channel Tunnel to France, skirt the bottom of Switzerland, northern Italy past Milan and onto Pisa. What’s the longest EV road trip you’ve done or WOULD you do?
