Show #718
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 6th March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
U.S.-BUILT ELECTRIC FORD TRANSIT WILL CHANGE THE VAN WORLD
"The best selling commercial van in the world is going electric, and that could change the entire fleet market." reports Jalopnik: "Ford already takes a huge cut of that market, selling almost a quarter of a million Transits in 2019. While the full details of the new Transit EV—like range, power output, and cost—haven’t been unveiled yet, Ford says this will all come out soon. Perhaps it’ll be a New York Auto Show thing."
Jim Farley, COO, Ford Motor Company: "Commercial vehicles are a critical component to our big bet on electrification, As leaders in this space, we are accelerating our plans to create solutions that help businesses run better, starting with our all-electric Transit and F-150. This Ford Transit isn’t just about creating an electric drivetrain, it’s about designing and developing a digital product that propels fleets forward.”
Ars Technica points out: "just like the full-size pickups so beloved by US trades—it will come in a variety of sizes, with three different body lengths, three different roof heights, and different cabin and body options."
Slashgear said: "There’ll be a cargo van version, a cutaway, a chassis cab, and three different roof heights, Ford suggests. That should help the electric Transit be more than a one-off novelty in the overall line-up. It’ll also mark a big step forward for connectivity, Ford promises. The all-electric Transit will use Ford Telematics and an embedded FordPass Connect 4G LTE modem. That will support in-vehicle hotspot use for up to 10 WiFi devices, but also allow for more precise fleet management. With the right software, companies will be able to track the van via GPS, add geofencing rules, and remotely monitor vehicle diagnostics."
And Digital Trends points out: "The electric Ford Transit will go on sale in the United States for the 2022 model year, meaning it will likely arrive in showrooms before the end of 2021. Pricing information hasn’t been announced yet. For context, the gasoline-burning Transit carries a base price of $34,510. Production will take place in the United States"

NORWAY: 5,145 ALL-ELECTRIC CARS REGISTERED IN FEBRUARY
"5,145 new zero-emission cars were registered in Norway in February just past. The market share of purely electric cars in new passenger car registrations was thus 49.7 per cent. In total, including HEV and PHEV, 79.2 per cent of all newly registered cars in Norway had either an electric or hybrid drive. The Audi e-tron was the most popular model across all drive types." reports electrive: "Compared to the same month last year, this marks an increase in all-electric registrations of 13.9 per cent. While Norway still recorded declines in the last three months of 2019, things have started looking up again in the new year. With regard to the individual models, the Audi e-tron quattro again recorded the highest number of new registrations across all drive types. A total of 1,171 of this model were registered for the road in February. The VW e-Golf (755 new registrations) only followed in second place by a clear margin. The Nissan Leaf made it to third place with 484 new registrations."

TESLA GETS GREEN LIGHT TO START PRODUCING NEW MODEL 3 LONG RANGE IN CHINA
"Tesla has received the green light to start producing a new version of the Model 3 Long Range RWD in China." writes Fred for Electrek: "When announcing the production of the Model 3 in China, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the automaker would only produce the lower-end versions of the car in the country and the higher-end would still be produced in Fremont, California. As production started at the plant last year, Tesla was only producing the Model 3 Standard Range Plus RWD. However, we reported last month on Tesla seeking to make the Model 3 Long Range RWD, a version of the Model 3 that was discontinued in the US, at Gigafactory Shanghai in China. Now we’ve learned that Tesla received approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to produce and sell the new version of the Model 3 in China (via Reuters)."

TESLA ADVERTISES FOR SOLAR, ENERGY STORAGE STAFF IN CHINA
" Tesla has advertised for solar and energy storage project managers in China, as the U.S. electric vehicle maker moves to expand its energy business into the country." reports Autoblog: "The two posts on the Tesla human resources department's official WeChat account mark the first time the California-based automaker has looked to hire for such roles in China. One post says Tesla is seeking project managers to design and execute solar projects for commercial or residential customers, while a second seeks managers to develop photovoltaic energy storage projects. The roles are advertised as based at its $2 billion factory in Shanghai"

ELECTRIC CARS ARE ONLY FOR ‘GREEN ADDICTS’ SAYS PEUGEOT BOSS
"Electric cars are only bought by “green addicts” and aren’t attractive enough to regular buyers, according to the chairman of France’s largest carmaker." says driven.co.nz: "Carlos Tavares, head of the PSA Group responsible for Peugeot, Citroen and DS, says electric vehicles still lack mainstream appeal. Speaking to reporters from a number of outlets including Reuters following the cancelled Geneva motor show, Tavares said manufacturers must work on making electric cars affordable. Tavares’ views clash with the heads of major manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, which are investing heavily in electric technology. Ola Källenius, Daimler chair and boss of Mercedes-Benz cars, says his company will double production of plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2020 and push to expand its “EQ” family of electric cars. But Tavares isn’t alone. BMW board member Klaus Frölich told reporters in June 2019 that the shift to electrification is overhyped, and that a government push for electric cars outstripped consumer demand."

A HYBRID PORSCHE 911 SOUNDS LIKE A PACKAGING NIGHTMARE
"Porsche is still developing a hybrid 911, it just sounds like a lot of hard work. Porsche wants to keep the same bodystyle of the current car, keep the rear seats, keep the engine location, etc., and all of that proves difficult when you have to fit batteries and motor in there somewhere." according to Jalopnik: "Auto Express interviewed Michael Steiner, who sits on the board for Porsche".
The platform is hybrid ready, and we have prototypes. I drive it myself; it’s fun to drive,” Dr. Michael Steiner, Porsche’s board member for R&D told us. “One thing that should be decided on is whether it is more performance-oriented hybrid or range-orientated plug-in hybrid. This is one of the main decisions we have to take - deciding which direction such a variant of the 911 should take. It’s also once again to do with weight. The more range you would like, the more weight you have to add, but if you are only looking for performance you could have a really small battery that boosts the car and regenerates under braking,” Steiner added.”

SOLAREDGE LAUNCHES SMART EV CHARGER
Following the launch of the first-of-its-kind, award-winning EV charging solar inverter, SolarEdge is now expanding its EV charging offering with the launch of its Smart EV Charger in North America. Increasing installation flexibility, the new level 2 EV charger (Maximum 9.6kW 40A@ 240Vac) supports installation either as a stand-alone unit or coupled with a SolarEdge PV system. When connected to a SolarEdge inverter with HD-Wave technology, the Smart EV Charger enables EV charging with excess solar energy in order to reduce charging costs and carbon footprints. The combined solution will offer charging solely from solar and in the future also support up to X7 faster charging by simultaneously (assuming 40A@240VAC vs 12A@120VAC) using grid and solar energy through its solar boost mode."
THE NETHERLANDS GOES FOR EV PURCHASE SUBSIDIES
"The Dutch government has now confirmed the rumours of a planned purchase subsidies for privately used e-cars from July and has provided further details. Hybrid cars and vehicles above a list price of 45,000 euros will not be considered. However, electric used cars will be considered." according to Electrive: "Those wanting to purchase an electric vehicle in the Netherlands will now be beckoned by a subsidy of 4,000 euros for the purchase of new electric cars with a list price of between 12,00 0 and 45,000 euros and a minimum range of 120 kilometres. The new subsidy rates include a bonus of 2,000 euros for used electric cars."
