Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 23rd March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Welcome to a new PRODUCER MADS GYBEL VEJ ANDERSEN

ELECTRIC CARS PRODUCE LESS CO2 THAN PETROL VEHICLES, STUDY CONFIRMS

"Electric vehicles produce less carbon dioxide than petrol cars across the vast majority of the globe – contrary to the claims of some detractors, who have alleged that the CO2 emitted in the production of electricity and their manufacture outweighs the benefits." reports The Guardian today: "The finding is a boost to governments, including the UK, seeking to move to net zero carbon emissions, which will require a massive expansion of the electric car fleet. Across the world, passenger road vehicles and household heating generate about a quarter of all emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. That makes electric vehicles essential to reducing overall emissions, but how clean an electric vehicle is also depends on how the electricity is generated, the efficiency of the supply and the efficiency of the vehicle. They found that in 53 out of 59 regions, comprising 95% of the world, electric vehicles and domestic heat pumps generate less carbon dioxide than fossil fuel powered cars or boilers. The only exceptions are heavily coal-dependent countries such as Poland. In countries such as Sweden, which gets most of its electricity from renewable sources, and France, which is largely powered by nuclear, the CO2 savings from using electric cars reach as high as 70% over their conventional counterparts."

Jean-Francois Mercure, of Exeter University: "“The answer is clear: to reduce carbon emissions, we should choose electric cars and household heat pumps over fossil fuel alternatives.”

TESLA MODEL Y OWNER DISCOVERS NEW HEAT PUMP AFTER FRUNK “TEARDOWN”

"Tesla Model Y saw the introduction of a new heat pump that’s designed to be more energy-efficient and provides a more reliable range in cold weather conditions" says Teslarati: "Tesla owner Erik Strait and host of the DÆrik Youtube channel recently disassembled the front trunk (“frunk”) section of the vehicle to have a closer look at the Model Y heat pump. After removing the plastic liners in the frunk, Erik was able to discover Model Y’s heat pump located on top of the front motor assembly. Coolant lines can also be seen running through the vehicle’s firewall and to a location where Tesla’s Hardware 3 computer resides."

2021 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8 HYBRID SPIED

"Though it’s still yet to hit UK soil, first customer deliveries of the all-new, mid-engined C8 Corvette have begun in the US, with the model competing with Porsche’s 992 911 Carrera. Following previous rumours of an electrified variant, photographers have already spotted a hybrid testing on the road." writes evo.co.uk - "Though a more standard hybrisied variant with similar power to the current pure-combustion car was listed, an iteration complete with an electrified 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 powertrain is said to produce 838bhp and a staggering 922lb ft of torque – these numbers lead us to believe that this would be the range-topping, track-oriented ZR1."

JAGUAR LAND ROVER PLANS NEW ELECTRIC CROSSOVERS, THE J-PACE AND ROAD ROVER

"According to a report today from UK’s Autocar, the company’s historic plant in Castle Bromwich will also produce two new electric crossovers – the Jaguar J-Pace and a Land Rover model dubbed “Road Rover.”" according to electrek: "The two new JLR models are expected to go on sale by the end of 2021. Both vehicles will be built on the new MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform. JLR is investing £1 billion ($1.15 billion) to convert its Castle Bromwich and Solihull plants to produce MLA cars. There have been hints since last year that the Jaguar I-Pace will eventually move to the MLA platform, likely when a second-generation version is created. Vehicles built on the MLA platform are reported to use a 90.2 kWh battery."

SWISS RIDER ON HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE SETS ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE DISTANCE RECORD

"Harley-Davidson's electric LiveWire offers about 100 miles of riding range, so it's not as well suited to long road trips as its gasoline-powered siblings, but that doesn't mean it can't go the distance. Swiss rider Michel von Tell proved that by setting a new 24-hour distance record (albeit an unofficial one) on Harley's first electric model." reports Autoblog: "Von Toll's record-setting, 1,070-mile trip took him to four countries in 23 hours and 48 minutes. He covered this distance on his own, and he comfortably beat the old, 818-mile record set in 2018 by a team of seven riders who took turns going around a test track on a Zero SR. Data like how much electricity Von Toll used during his trip and how many times he stopped to charge will be published by Harley-Davidson in the coming days."

AUDI E-TRON HYBRID COMING 2021

"The 2021 Audi A3 Sedan will be on sale in the United States before the end of the year, according to Car and Driver citing inside sources. The A3 sedan in the U.S. will come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with mild-hybrid assistance that will make about 240 horsepower (179 kilowatts)" says Motor1.com: "In comparison, the A3 hatchback in Europe offers buyers significantly more options. The base unit is a 1.0-liter three-cylinder with 110 hp (82 kW). There's also a 1.5-liter unit available with or without mild-hybrid assistance, and both have 150 hp (112 kW). A 2.0-liter turbodiesel comes with either 116 hp (87 kW) or 150 hp. Two plug-in hybrid versions are coming later using a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, electric motor, and six-speed dual-clutch gearbox."

POD POINT TO DEPLOY TRITIUM DC CHARGERS ACROSS THE UK

"The British charging provider Pod Point (recently acquired by EDF), has selected Australian manufacturer Tritium as a preferred supplier of DC fast chargers."   write InsideEVs: "The agreement concerns the Veefil-RT 50 kW DC chargers, which will be used in "existing and future network rollouts across the United Kingdom". Probably soon the units will be installed on a high scale at Tesco stores in the UK, as Pod Point, Volkswagen and Tesco are equipping 600 stores with charging infrastructure."

"The agreement ensures Tritium’s Veefil-RT 50kW DC rapid charger, renowned for its compact design, ease of use and low maintenance, will be offered to Pod Point’s new and existing customers as part of its continuing nationwide EV charging network rollout. Pod Point chose Tritium as its preferred DC rapid charger supplier due to the proven reliability of Tritium’s chargers, the ease and speed of installation and their unique design, which enable Pod Point to offer selected customers the ability to add their branding to each charger."

PORSCHE RENEWS PLAN TO MAKE MACAN CROSSOVER A "FULLY BATTERY-POWERED MODEL SERIES"

"Porsche is continuing plans to make the Macan crossover all-electric. It's a significant move, as the Macan is currently Porsche's bestselling model. In a report of its 2019 financial results, Porsche reiterated that the Macan will be the "second, fully battery-powered model series"—after the Taycan." says Green Car Reprots: "The automaker previously said the electric Macan would launch in 2022; it will arrive after the upcoming Taycan Cross Turismo wagon. Porsche has said the electric Macan will replace the gasoline model entirely, but it has left the door open for the current-generation Macan to be sold alongside the all-electric next-generation model. Porsche's wording likely signals that the company doesn't intend for that transition to last long."
