Show #744
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 10th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
TESLA MODEL Y HAS A TOW HITCH OPTION NOW
"On Friday, the automaker updated its website to include a tow hitch option for $1,000. The company says it's a "high strength, Class II steel tow bar" and will let the Model Y tow up to 3,500 pounds." reports CNET: "No, it won't challenge a Ford Expedition or Chevrolet Tahoe, but it should be enough to haul a small trailer or boat. It's a quick change after the Model Y's owner's manual originally said the SUV wasn't rated for towing at all. And there's more good news on the Model Y front: Tesla will now sell owners a roof rack. While we knew the accessory was on the way, it's now available for $450. It looks to be identical to the rack Tesla sells for the Model 3."

As for Model 3, still only Europe. SR+ and Long Range AWD.
TESLA PRICES LONGER-RANGE MODEL 3 TO ATTRACT MORE CHINA BUYERS
"Tesla Inc. set a price for its longer-range variant of its locally-built Model 3 sedans in China just 13% higher than its entry-level model, a sign that the carmaker is setting competitive prices in order to attract even more consumers in the world’s largest electric vehicle market." according to Bloomberg: "The four-door vehicle sells for 366,550 yuan ($52,000) before rebates. After subsidies from the Chinese government and qualifying for exemption from purchase tax, the price of the upgraded Model 3 variant starts at 339,050 yuan. By comparison, the imported equivalent was priced at 439,900 yuan. The longer-range Model 3s are set to be delivered from June."
China Daily notes that Performance version also went online: "The Tesla Model 3 Performance made-in-China version is also open for booking orders at the same time, starting with a pre-subsidy price of 419,800 yuan. Currently, the Tesla Model 3 Performance version is manufactured in the United States and sold in China at a price of 509,900 yuan. The Model 3 Performance version made in China is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2021."

FORD F-150 PLUG-IN HYBRID RUMORED TO OFFER ONLY 10 MILES OF EV RANGE
"One of the things that’s so nice about plug-in hybrid vehicles today is that most of them offer some all-electric driving range. For some plug-in hybrid vehicles, that means you can do most of your daily driving without using gasoline. The more pure electric driving a plug-in-hybrid offers, the better it is for owners. We know that Ford is working on the all-electric Ford F-150 and the Ford F-150 Hybrid, there will also be a Ford F-150 plug-in hybrid. A new rumor on the all-electric driving range for the plug-in hybrid has surfaced." says Ford Authority: "The rumor tips that the F-150 plug-in hybrid “will probably exceed 10 miles” of all-electric driving range. That is a very short driving distance, and according to the rumor, that driving range is unloaded. That would mean if you have stuff in the bed or are towing a trailer, the electric range would be even less."

FOUR REASONS YOU'LL WANT TO BUY POLESTAR 2
It’s basically a Volvo XC40 - The XC40 Recharge and the Polestar 2 both use the same powertrain—a 78kWh battery and dual motors for all-wheel drive. A combined 402hp means 0-100kph in under 4.7sec. In the Polestar, that translates to 470km of range, while the bigger, bluffer XC40 only manages around 400km. Polestar 2 is 275 miles EPA target.
Production has already started - It’s not long till Polestar 2s start arriving at showrooms. In the last couple of weeks, production began at Geely’s plant in Luqiao, China, where all units will be built alongside Chinese-market XC40s and the Lynk & Co 01. Cars are due to land in July, starting at £49,900.
It can tow! Max. towing capacity: 1500 kg. Max. towing unbraked trailer: 750 kg.
Google did the infotainment system - For the 2’s infotainment, Polestar paired up with Google to develop a car-friendly version of the tech giant’s Android operating system. Android Automotive, which is coming to Volvos, too (obviously), gives you navigation via Google Maps, access to the Play Store, and Google’s voice assistant.
WORLD’S FIRST ZERO-EMISSIONS ELECTRIC CONSTRUCTION SITE!
"Even in cities like Oslo, Norway, which is typically thought of as progressive and “green” here in the ‘States, more than 20% of the total CO2 emissions comes from heavy-duty construction equipment. That’s a huge number, and you can bet that older, less regulated machines in other major cities are even worse. That fact has motivated the authorities in Oslo to enact laws that say all new, public buildings must be built with “fossil-free” construction machinery." repors REd Green and Blue: "You can see the Suncar ZE85 battery-powered excavators get to work in this surprisingly quiet video".

MERCEDES BLEW A HUGE ELECTRIC SPORTS CAR LEAD
"Seven whole years ago, Mercedes AMG was on the forefront of electric sports car technology. It had experimented with both a hydrogen-powered and a full battery electric vehicle version of its begullwing’d SLS AMG sports car, even going so far as to throw down an electric lap record at the Nordschleife" says Jalopnik: "In case you don’t remember, the Mercedes SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive was a limited edition electric sports car released in 2013. Only about 100 examples were built, but it packed one electric motor for each wheel, providing a combined 740 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. It was NEDC rated with a range of 160 miles from a 60 kWh liquid-cooled battery stack. All of this advanced Mercedes tech cost around $550,000 brand new. If Mercedes had held up its end of the bargain here, it could be at the forefront of electric tech in the sports car market. Instead, it developed an electric Smart, an A-class EV, and the gargantuan EQC SUV."

EV STARTUP ZYPP INSTALLS 20 BATTERY SWAPPING STATIONS
"The green tech startup Zypp on Monday made its foray in battery swapping for electric vehicles, the company said in a press release. It has installed 15 battery swapping stations in Gurugram." according to Energy Infrapost: "the users can use the electric scooter ride-sharing app Zypp to opt for a battery swap option and avail a swap within 3 minutes and continue to ride e-bikes for another 75kms without breaking. Fitted with IoT locks and lithium-ion batteries, Zypp e-bikes can also be hired remotely via the app. Upon completion of the trip, users need to park these e-scooters in the Zypp parking points only which ensures complete safety of these scooters at all times, informed the release."
