Show #754
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 20th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
T&E FINDS BEV ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN ICES
"In Europe, an electric car is responsible for almost three times less CO2 over its life cycle than a comparable petrol or diesel car, Transport & Environment has determined and published a corresponding calculation tool." reports electrive: "Even in the worst case scenario, an electric car in Poland with a battery made in China emits 22 per cent less CO2 than a comparable diesel car and 28 per cent less than a gasoline car, according to T&E. The best case, according to T&E, would be an electric car with a battery made in Sweden, if the electric car was also driven in Sweden (i.e. charged with the electricity mix there). In this case, 80 per cent less CO2 was emitted compared to diesel and 81 per cent less compared to petrol. The CO2 emissions of the e-vehicles include the emissions from production. According to Transport & Environment, they used IPCC data for this purpose. Here, the emissions from the entire supply chain are to be included, right up to the operation of the mines – i.e. far beyond pure cell production."
TESLA MODEL S PERFORMANCE NOW HITS 60 MPH IN JUST 2.3 SECONDS
"Tesla says the Model S Performance hits 60 MPH in a time of just 2.3 seconds. That's just a slight improvement over the previously listed time of 2.4 seconds, but it brings with it new bragging rights for Tesla since the official figure now puts the Model S into a league of cars that numbers just a few." says InsideEVs: "If Tesla manages to find a way to bring the 0-60 MPH time down just another tenth of a second, the Model S Performance will stand alone as the only car in the world capable of hitting 60 MPH in 2.2 seconds and to think that some believe electric cars are slow. They're not."

TESLA CYBERTRUCK WILL HAVE 500-MILE RANGE AND “FLOAT FOR A WHILE”
"Elon Musk has been leaking further details on the divisive Tesla Cybertruck, a sci-fi-inspired all-electric pick-up, via Twitter this week." reports leasing.com: "Musk confirmed the vehicle will have a heat pump, like the upcoming Model Y, an all-new air suspension and also claimed it will be able to temporarily float. That’s right, when he was asked about its wading depth, he said it will even “float for a while”. Quite what that means, I'm sure we’ll find out in due course."

VOLVO CARS REOPENS SWEDISH FACTORIES & OFFICES
"After all of its facilities have been cleaned extensively, Volvo Cars has announced that it has reopened its manufacturing plants and company offices in Torslanda, Sweden, following a coronavirus-related shutdown over the last few weeks." writes CleanTechnica: "“the layout in all meeting rooms, office spaces and restaurants has been adjusted where necessary to allow for social distancing,” the press release from Volvo reads. “For example, by ensuring that desks are placed appropriately and limiting the number of people allowed in meeting rooms and restaurants.”"

TESLA POWERWALL UPDATE MAKES IT SMARTER DURING A POWER OUTAGE
"Tesla's Powerwall backup battery system for home use just got smarter. In an update released Friday, the Powerwall can now work with Tesla charging stations at home to prioritize energy needs during a power outage." says CNET: "Before the update, in the event of a blackout, the Powerwall kicked in to supply power to the home and continue to serve juice to a Tesla charger if the car was plugged in. Now, the Powerwall will communicate with the Tesla charger and the two will work together to share energy. If the Powerwall doesn't have enough energy stored to power the home's essential needs, such as air conditioning, it will automatically stop charging the car. Even if the home begins to show an uptick in energy needs, the Powerwall will slow the amount of juice headed to a Tesla before cutting it off entirely."
13.5 kWh in a Powerwall.

NEW VW TIGUAN INCOMING WITH R AND PHEV VERSIONS
"VW is gearing up to reveal a heavily-updated Tiguan SUV in the second half of 2020, with this first teaser image showing the refreshed design." says CAR Magazine: "VW says the Tiguan is now it's best-selling car, not just for the brand but the entire VW Group. More than 900,000 were built in 2019 alone. A new PHEV will arrive alongside the Tiguan’s facelift as part of that rollout, utilising the MQB platform’s innate ability to house an electrified variant. The Tiguan plug-in will use a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine and a 13kWh battery pack, with VW targeting between 31 and 43 miles of zero-emission electric range. While speaking at a digital presentation over VW’s PHEV plans, Dr. Kai Philipp – the brand’s project manager for electrified powertrains – told us that that target applied to all of VW’s upcoming new PHEVs: ‘surveys with Volkswagen customers have shown that a total electric range from 50 to 70 km (31-43 miles) fits the need of our customers.’"
VW will call the Golf PHEV an eHybrid and there's an Arteon too.

CAN THE MINI COOPER SE ROAD TRIP? WE DRIVE IT 1,111 MILES TO FIND OUT
"Some may say that taking the 2020 MINI Cooper SE, the shortest-range BEV available in the US today, on a New Jersey to North Carolina round trip isn't really the best idea. However, we decided to do it for a couple of reasons." writes Tom Moloughney for InsideEVs: "I was pleasantly surprised at the MINI Cooper SE's driving range at highway speeds. About 50 miles in I realized that I could probably space the stops at 90 to 100 miles apart without fear of running short of range, and that's with the heat on and me driving 70 mph to 80 mph in 35 to 40-degree temperatures when I started out. The vehicle quickly rises to the 50 kW charging limit and holds the full rate until the car is 75% charged before beginning to ramp down. When the car reaches 90% state of charge, it's still accepting 18-19 kW, and that's not bad at all."
50kW charge speed though. Tom also got to see inside en Electrify America charger, see the article!

THE WEALTHIEST PEOPLE PREFER TO BUY ELECTRIC CARS
"High-income households bought three out of four newly registered electric cars in Norway last year. Those who earn the most prefer electric cars over fossil fuel cars." reports Norway Today: "The more you earn, the more likely you are to choose an electric car rather than fossil-fueled cars. Households with the highest income last year bought 37 per cent of all newly registered electric cars and 21 per cent of all newly registered fossil-fueled cars."
