Show #757
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 22nd April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
CHINA CUTS EV SUBSIDIES—TESLA MODEL 3 EXCEEDS PRICE LIMIT
"China has announced a cut to its subsidies on new energy vehicles (NEVs), effective immediately. It’s been something of a rollercoaster ride for the subsidies of late. In 2015, the government announced plans to end the subsidies this year. In January, it said there would be “no significant cuts” this year. In March it confirmed they would be extended, but warned of a possible reduction." writes ChargedEVs: "The government has tightened requirements for the driving range, power efficiency and sales prices of cars that qualify for the subsidies. Only passenger cars costing less than 300,000 yuan ($42,376) will be eligible. That excludes some higher-priced EVs sold by BMW and Daimler. It also edges out Tesla’s China-made Model 3, which is currently priced at 323,800 yuan before subsidies."

POLESTAR’S FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC VEHICLE WILL START AT $59,900 IN THE US
"Polestar, the electric performance brand spun out of Volvo, said the base price of its first all-electric vehicle will be $59,900 in the United States, lower than originally targeted." says TechCrunch: "The company believes the vehicle is well-positioned for a successful entry into the U.S. market thanks to its lower pricing, tax incentives and the ability for customers to buy it online, said Gregor Hembrough, who heads up Polestar USA. The U.S. prices are also below incentive thresholds in a few critical markets such as California and New York. The Polestar 2 will likely be held up as a possible competitor to the Tesla Model 3. The pricing on the two vehicles don’t quite match up unless the $7,500 federal tax incentive, for which Polestar still qualifies, is considered."
AUDI E-TRON GT SPIED TESTING IN PRODUCTION-READY BODY
the flagship E-Tron GT electric sedan is underway and a test prototype of the same was spotted testing in the snow. the production-ready prototype appears to have retained most of the concept’s styling. The four-door sedan has a low-slung nose, with sharp LED headlamps and cascading grille hiding under the camouflage. However, visible on the prototype are the two charging ports positioned on the front fenders on both sides, like the mechanically-related Porsche Taycan." according to CarWale: "We expect the new Audi E-Tron GT to break cover either later this year or in 2021. If rumours are to be believed, the E-Tron GT would be much more affordable than the Porsche Taycan."

NEW OPEL MOKKA TEASED WITH ELECTRIC VERSION, MINOR NAME CHANGE
"Opel has kicked off the teasing game for its all-new Mokka to signal a vast departure from the outgoing model not just in terms of design, but also as far the underpinnings and even the name." says Motor1: "It is widely believed the revamped model will ride on a platform developed by Opel’s new parent company – PSA Peugeot Citroën. We’re talking about the CMP platform, meaning the second generation will have a lot in common with the Peugeot 2008 and the posh DS3 Crossback. Opel does say a fully electric version is in the works and the company will actually prioritize the EV model as the zero-emissions model will be the first to go on sale early 2021. The EV model will likely rely on a 136-hp electric motor and a 50-kWh battery pack with enough juice for nearly 200 miles (322 kilometers) between charges to mirror the e-2008."

PIVOT POWER DEVELOPING 52MW HYBRID BATTERY
"Pivot Power is developing a hybrid 50MW lithium-ion battery and a 2MW vanadium redox flow battery project in Oxford which it says will be the world’s largest." says renews.biz: "Pivot Power, owned by EDF Renewables, said the hybrid system will combine the high-power capabilities of a lithium-ion battery with the heavy cycling, non-degrading characteristics of vanadium redox flow technology to create an “innovative solution which will meet the complex demands of multiple energy applications”.
The battery project will be connected directly to the transmission network. Alongside the battery 100 EV charge points are to be installed across the city for council vehicle depots and public use."
The project is led by Oxford City Council and Pivot Power, an EDF Renewables UK company.

OAK RIDGE TESTS INDUCTIVE BI-DIRECTIONAL CHARGING
"Researchers at the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have successfully developed and deployed a bi-directional inductive charging system on a UPS PHEV delivery vehicle. Bidirectionality was not the only feature of the experiment." says electrive: "In the test, the ORNL system charged at up to 20 kW over an air gap of eleven inches (28 cm) with an efficiency of over 92 per cent. More impressive than the charging power, however, is the distance between the two coils: At 28 centimetres, vehicles with higher ground clearance can also be charged without the vehicle’s charging plate having to be lowered or the plate on the infrastructure side raised to minimize the air gap. The bidirectionality of the system is also new. This means that the vehicle battery can also be used as a mains buffer. According to the ORNL, the technology used “is fully compliant with grid power quality standards”. At least in the USA, the vehicle could be easily integrated into the grid."

OIL PRICES MAY BE AT ALL-TIME LOWS, BUT IT'S STILL WORTH BUYING AN ELECTRIC CAR
"For the first time in 34 years, the price of a barrel of oil has dropped to historic lows — below $0 somehow, confusingly — but that shouldn't erode efforts to go electric, especially for any future car purchases." according to Mashable: "Gas prices will eventually go back up, "refueling" a vehicle with electricity offers more price and availability stability, and climate change is still very much a thing. A month of limited global emissions doesn't change that. In Milan, Italy, city officials are attempting to retain the environmental benefits of a shutdown city. A plan for reopening now includes more walking and cycling space to reduce car use within city limits."
