Show #774

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 10th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

THE CASE FOR MULTIPLE TESLA FACTORIES HAS NEVER BEEN STRONGER

"The recent controversial events surrounding Tesla and its main electric vehicle production plant in Fremont, CA, is one that will likely have repercussions on the company’s future. But beyond the controversy, the recent events surrounding Fremont highlight one key point: it is in Tesla’s best interests to ensure that its vehicle production facilities will no longer be exclusive to one state." writes Teslarati: " So far, the mayor of the City of Fremont and the City Palo Alto have sided with Tesla. Tesla’s next facility will likely be located in Texas, and so far, Sen. Ted Cruz has stated on Twitter that the state is fully behind the electric car maker. Texas actually makes sense for Tesla, especially considering that SpaceX, Musk’s private space venture, already has a facility in Boca Chica. If speculations prove right, Tesla can very well be building its first Terafactory in the state, which will be making the Cybertruck, and perhaps other vehicles like Model Y and Semi as well."

Palo Alto Mayor here. I would be really sad and disappointed if @Tesla left @cityofpaloalto, and stand ready to help. I truly appreciate having a cutting edge company based here, employing people, paying taxes, and helping to solve the climate crisis. Happy to help @elonmusk. https://t.co/LYsu0gbPfa

FORD MUSTANG MACH-E IS READY FOR MOTHER NATURE’S SURPRISES

"We are almost two months into Spring, but the Northeast United States is enjoying a Springtime snowstorm with accumulating snow instead of sun and warmth. Ford took the opportunity to underline that its upcoming all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E is ready for such surprises, having a very capable all-wheel-drive system. Interestingly, according to Ford, the AWD version is very popular in the U.S., especially in Northern and Midwestern states. In New England (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) almost all reservations are for all-wheel drive." says InsideEVs: "Robert Iorio, Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicle engineering manager said:

“Mach-E’s available all-wheel drive is designed to help instill driver confidence in all conditions. The team has integrated e-drive propulsion, all-wheel-drive calibration and brake control in a way that optimizes fine motor skills to enable an immediate response in low-traction conditions and ensure the performance expected from Mustang – even in the snow.”

CHRIS HARRIS FINDS TAYCAN TURBO S AS THE MOST COMFORTABLE PORSCHE EVER

"Released in 2020, the Porsche Taycan is Porsche’s first all-electric vehicle. With a battery making up the floor and electric motors at both the front and rear, the Porsche Taycan follows the usual formula of a modern-day electric vehicle. The Porsche Taycan uses an 800-volt architecture as opposed to the 400-volt layout found in competitive vehicles. The top tier Taycan Turbo S uses two electric motors for a combined output of 750 horsepower and 774 lb-ft of torque which is good for a 0 to 60 time in the 2-second range. " according to Motor1: "Although Porsche’s naming convention of a “Turbo” model doesn’t exactly make sense, the Porsche Taycan is an impressive machine. It’s not just good for an electric car but good for Porsche, and according to Chris Harris, the Taycan is the most comfortable Porsche ever.

SANDY MUNRO EXPLAINS THE UNIQUE OCTOVALVE IN THE TESLA MODEL Y

"Sandy Munro continues his incredible Tesla Model Y teardown series, with this segment focusing on the vehicle's unique heat pump system and what's been called the octovalve." says Tom Moloughney: "The octovalve has a four-position electric motor that distributes the gycol-based liquid coolant to the appropriate components in the Model Y, including the power electronics, motors, and battery. This is a really compact, great way to put things together - Sandy Munro

Munro goes over the coolant manifold, the notorious octovalve, the base manifold condenser, accumulator, chiller assembly, and LCC assembly. While he does give some insight into what each part does, as he mentioned in the beginning, he doesn't really offer too much detailed information. For more technical details, you need to purchase his report on the cooling system."

MOBILE FAST-CHARGING: A MUST-HAVE FOR ELECTRIC TRUCK AND BUS FLEETS?

"Fully electric delivery trucks, cargo vans, shuttle vehicles, and transit and school buses are all due to become increasingly common as fleets go green and diesels are retired.  That’s where a recent surge of interest in mobile-charging solutions comes in. As a backup plan for the times when charge points and infrastructure won’t quite cut it and trucks need a little more charge to accommodate the unforeseen, mobile systems will be able to provide a fast charge on the go."  says Green Car Reports: "Tuesday, Colorado’s Lightning Systems revealed the Lightning Mobile, one such system that’s more than the small battery carts for charging cars and e-bikes—stepped up in size and geared specifically for the needs of big commercial vehicles.  Lightning Mobile comes with 192 kilowatt-hours of liquid-cooled battery storage and can deliver DC fast charging at up to 80 kilowatts or, optionally, AC Level 2 charging at up to 19.2 kw. The unit itself is charged at Level 2 at up to 18 kw."
