Show #779
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 15th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
TESLA'S MILLION MILE BATTERY WILL SLASH COSTS
"For months, Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has been teasing investors, and rivals, with promises to reveal significant advances in battery technology during a "Battery Day" in late May." says Autoblog: "New, low-cost batteries designed to last for a million miles of use and enable electric Teslas to sell profitably for the same price or less than a gasoline vehicle are just part of Musk's agenda, people familiar with the plans told Reuters. The new “million mile” battery at the center of Tesla's strategy was jointly developed with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) and deploys technology developed by Tesla in collaboration with a team of academic battery experts recruited by Musk, three people familiar with the effort said. Eventually, improved versions of the battery, with greater energy density and storage capacity and even lower cost, will be introduced in additional Tesla vehicles in other markets, including North America, the sources said. Reuters reported exclusively in February that Tesla was in advanced talks to use CATL’s lithium iron phosphate batteries, which use no cobalt, the most expensive metal in EV batteries."
First I have read about it being in China first. Also, CATL being a partner too.
Cell to pack technology - rather than cells to modules to packs.
Price parity, and possibly even cheaper EVs than fossil cars.

TESLA STARTS BUILDING LONG RANGE MODEL 3 CARS AT CHINA PLANT
"Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) said on Thursday it had started producing Long Range Model 3 vehicles in its Shanghai factory and aimed to deliver them to customers soon." reports Reuters: "The company said the model would be sold at 344,050 yuan ($48,495), keeping the price steady even after China stops offering generous subsidies from July for electric vehicles that cost more than 300,000 yuan."
CHINA’S MODEL 3 INTERIOR RECEIVES A TIMELY MODEL Y-INSPIRED UPDATE
" the latest Model 3 units produced in Gigafactory Shanghai are fitted with both USB Type C charging ports and a wireless charging pad, both of which are utilized in the Tesla Model Y." reckons Teslarati: "Tesla’s use of USB-C and wireless charging capabilities are an advantage for electric car owners. Many mobile devices on the market today are capable of fast-charging with USB-C ports, and flagship devices from premier smartphone makes such as Apple and Samsung are equipped with wireless charging capabilities. Gigafactory Shanghai’s Phase 2 is expected to house a Model Y factory. Currently, the local production plant is poised to hit a production run-rate of 200,000 Model 3 sedans every year."

VOLVO CEO SAYS VIRUS WILL ACCELERATE EV ADOPTION
Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson. Speaking at a Financial Times global digital conference: "Electrification will go faster. I think it would be naive to believe after some months, everything will return to normal, and our customers will come back into a showroom asking for diesel cars. They will ask even more for electric cars. And that is speeding up. If governments subsidize a return to the old world, I think would be a waste of money. They should use the money to promote new technology as they were planning to do before corona. The way we distribute cars, with physical showrooms and so on, I think everybody has learned during this shutdown that e-commerce is working, and more and more people have experience. That will encourage people to look for cars online. So I think the distribution and where you’re selling cars will change. It has been changing already, but that will be changed more rapidly now."

ONE FUTURE GM ELECTRIC VEHICLE MAY BE INTRODUCED EARLIER THAN PLANNED
"" it looks as though one future GM electric vehicle could even arrive earlier than planned. Vice President of Electric and Autonomous Vehicles at GM, Ken Morris, indicated that one EV program may be pulled forward." says GM Authority: "Morris indicated that several other GM electric vehicle-related plans remained unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that GM’s deal with Honda to produce two new electric vehicles was still moving ahead, and that plans to source new renewable energy from DTE were also on track. Morris also said that GM’s $25 billion budget for EV programs was still in place."
DACIA PREPARES TO LAUNCH FIRST EV WITH SPRING MINI-SUV
"Dacia’s first electric vehicle, the Spring, which is based on the Renault K-ZE mini-SUV sold in China, will go on sale early next year. The Spring was first revealed as a concept in early March, in an online presentation instead of at the cancelled Geneva auto show. The production version will have a range of “at least” 200 km (124) miles, Dacia says." according to Automotive News Europe: "Dacia has not announced a price, but the City K-ZE sells in China for about 8,000 euros ($8,900). Former Renault Group CEO Thierry Bollore said last year that the automaker was working on an electric vehicle that would sell for 10,000 euros or less."

ELECTRIC PANEL VANS FROM CITROEN, PEUGEOT AND VAUXHALL/OPEL
Earlier this week I talked about the electric van Citroen e-jumpy, I didn't make clear for UK listeners that it's also known as the e-Dispatch here. So for the UK: "Citroen has launched the ë-Dispatch, the French firm's latest pure-electric van, offering up to 205 miles on a single charge. A 50 kWh pack will allow for a 143 mile range on a charge, whilst the 75 kWh battery offers the headline 205 mile range. Either will power a 100 kW electric motor." says Next Green Car.
From Opel we already mentioned the Vivaro-e which is a larger panel van: "The 75kWh battery boasts a range of up to 330 kilometres, or for less intense usage needs, the 50kWh battery has a range of up to 230km (WLTP)."
And finally from electrive: "Peugeot has also presented its version of the battery-electric transporter with the e-Expert. The technology is identical to that of its two sister models. Peugeot plans to announce prices in June. The drive train and the batteries are the same for all models: the electric motor known from the Opel Corsa-e and Peugeot e-208 and e-2008 has an output of 100 kW. In contrast to the small cars, however, two battery sizes are offered in the vans, each with 50 and 75 kWh. Like the Opel Vivaro-e, Peugeot offers a three-phase AC charger with 11 kW in addition to the standard AC charger with 7.4 kW (single-phase)."
With a max payload of 1,210 kg these are useful vans, with towing of 1,000kg.
BYD HAN EV REVEALED AS TESLA MODEL 3 RIVAL
The Han EV is the first full-electric passenger car equipped with BYD’s ground-breaking new ‘Blade Battery’ technology – delivering greatly enhanced safety, improved range capability and a simplified, smaller pack design.
The innovative battery system also pushes its cruising range up to 605 kilometres (376 miles) on a full charge.
The Blade Battery can produce a stable current of up to 800 Amps powering the BYD Han EV. The high-performance silicon carbide motor-control module improves the peak-current capacity by 58%, enabling acceleration from 0 to100km/h (62mph) in just 3.9 seconds. Additionally, the Han is also China’s first mass-produced EV equipped with Bosch’s ‘IPB Intelligent Integrated Brake System’, which not only brings braking safety with higher precision, but also delivers a longer range and improved braking comfort.
MORE ON HYUNDAI 45 EV
"Hyundai has been spotted testing a prototype for a compact electric crossover SUV that's expected to be launched in 2021." says MotorAuthority: Hyundai already offers EVs in the form of the battery-electric Ioniq Electric and Kona Electric and fuel cell-electric Nexo, but the new SUV will be the automaker's first vehicle based on a platform designed specifically for battery-electric cars. Called the E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform), the platform will also likely be used by Kia and Genesis for their own EVs."

HOT CUPRA VERSION OF SEAT EL-BORN ELECTRIC CAR IN THE PIPELINE
"Cupra, SEAT’s performance-focussed brand, could soon launch a hot version of the el-Born EV. The Spanish brand has recently filed trademark applications for both the “Cupra Born” and “Cupra el-Born” nameplates." writes AutoExpress: "The Cupra el-Born would be based on the Volkswagen Group’s dedicated MEB electric underpinnings. Unlike the standard SEAT el-Born, though, this Cupra variant should feature a more powerful electric motor, supplied by a larger-capacity battery pack. The el-Born concept looks similar in length to a SEAT Leon, but it rides on larger wheels up to 20-inches in diameter. Like all of the Volkswagen Group’s MEB cars, the el-Born also has a long wheelbase relative to its overall length – which should allow it to deliver the interior space of a car from the class above."
