Show #789
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 25th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
CHINA: ROUGHLY 61,000 PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CARS SOLD IN APRIL 2020
"The automotive market in China continues to recover, as in April 2020, overall car sales nearly matched results from a year ago (down only 3%)." says InsideEVs looking at EV Sales Blog: " more than 61,000 passenger plug-ins (72% were BEVs) were sold at the market share of about 4%. After the first four months of 2020, total sales amounted to roughly 191,000 (4.2% of the total market). The Tesla Model 3 remains on the top after four months, but with "just" 4,312 sales it was actually second best in April, behind the BYD Qin Pro EV (5,096). It will be interesting to see how things will change once BYD introduces the Han in volume. Previous reports already indicated that the Model 3 result in April would be weaker (3,635 wholesale shipments) and now we got the confirmation. Reuters adds that in total 4,633 Tesla cars were registered (so 312 Model S/X we guess)."

THE NEXT FORD RANGER COULD COME WITH PLUG-IN HYBRID POWER
"It was a little more than a year ago that we saw renders that looked like they could be the next Ford Ranger. After Ford’s lawyers kindly confirmed that they belonged to the company, we knew they might have some bearing on how the next Ranger will look. Now we think we know what will be under the hood, too." according to Jalopnik: "Motor1 has cited a report from Australian outlet CarExpert which claims that Ford’s mid-sized pickup will feature a new plug-in hybrid powertrain never seen before in another production model when it arrives sometime next year as a 2022 model. The drivetrain will allegedly see the Ranger receive a version for ford’s well-known 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder which, when combined with a ten-speed automatic transmission and an electric motor, should be good for 362 horsepower and more than 500 lb-ft of torque. Those are serious numbers for a mid-sized pickup and if the mileage numbers are similarly impressive, Ford will have quite the package on their hands."

TESLA FILES TO SELL NEW MODEL 3 WITH CHEAPER LITHIUM IRON PHOSPHATE BATTERIES
"Tesla has filed with the Chinese government for approval to sell a new version of the Model 3 with cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The vehicles built in Shanghai are Tesla’s first without Panasonic-made battery cells in them. Tesla contracted LG Chem and CATL to make the batteries for the vehicles being built at its new factory." writes electrek: "Now Tesla has applied for with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for approval of a new Model 3 equipped with LFP batteries in the latest batch of vehicles published in the Ministry’s Road Motor Vehicle Manufacturing Enterprises and Products. The main disadvantage of LFP batteries is their lower-energy density, but CATL, which is believed to be Tesla’s supplier, has made improvements in LFP energy density and longevity."
Also, cell to pack technology.
From the comments: "LFP also have 5000-15000 cycle life, and better round trip efficiency and higher power density. They are nickel free too. They have a much wider temperature range nearly as good cold as Lead acid, and they like heat to a degree. They should be able to charge faster and perhaps go faster. Energy density is their only down side is it looks like that's has gotten much better."

PORSCHE TAYCAN ROLLOUT SLOWED BY CORONAVIRUS
"The coronavirus pandemic has complicated Porsche's rollout of a "milestone" model in the United States and Canada, to a lesser extent." according to Automotive News: "But as COVID-19 cases surfaced in Germany, Taycan production at the Zuffenhausen assembly plant in Stuttgart was halted for six weeks starting in early April. Production restarted in mid-May. Porsche reported about 350 Taycan sales in the U.S. from December through March. Global demand for the Taycan has outstripped Porsche's expectations, forcing it to reportedly double annual capacity to 40,000. The EV's importance to the brand was underscored in February when Porsche ran its first Super Bowl ad in more than 20 years to promote the electric model."
Porsche Cars North America CEO Klaus Zellmer told Automotive News last week: "That six-week window was very much reserved for fulfilling the U.S. demand. We had to take thousands of cars out of our sales plan for this year that we will not get into the United States and Canada."

2020 PORSCHE TAYCAN 4S – IS THIS THE BEST ELECTRIC CAR IN THE WORLD?
"The car’s 800V electrical system allows for not only that kind of charging power to be used, but it also allowed Porsche to use extra thin cables around the car’s body, shaving some 40 kilos of weight in the process. And when it comes to sports cars, weight is an important factor. As for the charging times, it will depend on the type of charger you’re using. Use a 270 kW one and you can go from 5% to 80% in 22 minutes." says BMW Blog: "Porsche infused so much driving enhancing technology into the Taycan that it needs a dedicated computer just to handle all the data read by the sensors on board. And that computer must run on “black magic”, or something, because it was doing incredible things for a car that was over 2.2 tons with be behind the wheel."

TESLA MODEL Y WINS OVER EV RENTAL FIRM THAT SCRAPPED 100 MODEL 3 ORDERS CITING BUILD ISSUES
"The Tesla Model Y was recently reviewed by a German electric car rental company known as nextmove, which highlighted the electric crossover’s advantages compared to the Model 3. The EV rental firm is a veteran in the electric car movement, but nextmove gained particular attention last year when the company canceled a massive order of 100 Tesla Model 3 over build quality issues." reports Teslarati. That's a $5.5m order: "However, it appears that the rental company has maintained an open mind with Tesla, as the firm has decided to purchase the Model Y crossover for its business. The nextmove Managing Director, for one, has stated that the Model Y will likely make waves in Germany, especially when Gigafactory Berlin starts producing the vehicle for the local market."

SIX IN 10 UK DRIVERS 'TOO DAUNTED' TO BUY AN ELECTRIC CAR
"Almost six in 10 UK motorists are still too concerned about electric cars to consider buying one, according to new research. The study of 2,000 UK drivers found that a perceived lack of charging points and high mileages are among the key reasons why drivers feel battery power may not be for them." says Motor1: "Almost three-quarters (73 percent) also said they thought owning an EV would not be feasible due to a lack of charging infrastructure, although this rose to almost eight in 10 (77 percent) among those living in rural areas. However, even those in more urban locations had their concerns, with 64 percent saying charging points were too scarce."
