Show #807
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 12th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
FORD-VW JOINT VENTURE DETAILS FINALIZED
Two years ago, Ford and VW announced they’d explore the possibility of jointly developing vehicles. A year later, they expanded their partnership, and today, the two detail the specifics. As early as next year, we could see the two commercial vans arrive, too. The smaller city van will be based on the latest VW Caddy model, while the one-ton cargo van is likely a replacement for the Ford Transit." reports Motor1: "Ford will also build an electric vehicle for Europe using Volkswagen’s electric MEB platform. Eight million vans and trucks could be produced over the products’ life cycles, according to the companies. That doesn’t include the estimated 600,000-plus EVs Ford could build every year, either."

VW E-GOLF #1 IN MAY IN NETHERLANDS, TESLA MODEL 3 LEADER IN 2020
" last month we saw the veteran VW e-Golf win its first monthly best seller title in 15 months, with 221 deliveries, just edging out April’s best seller, the Kia Niro EV (217 units) and its cousin, the Hyundai Kona EV (212)." says CleanTechnica: "Other surprises last month were the #6 Volvo XC40 PHEV and #7 Ford Kuga PHEV, with the Swede being last month’s best selling PHEV while the American crossover registered its best score so far, with 118 units, the highest score for a Ford in this market since December 2015, when 538 C-Max Energi (remember this one?) were registered. And why is this interesting? After years of Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV domination, the PHEV race is now more open"

CANADIAN SHOP CRACKED TESLA'S ACCELERATION BOOST
The Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD and Performance versions are engineered similarly, with Tesla previously saying motors which tested to have higher performance were to be used in the faster version. However more recently there are reports that the cars are identical. And if you do own a LR AWD you can go back to Tesla anytime, pay $2000 and they'll unlock more performance. "What if you could bypass Tesla entirely and get your performance boost for just over half the price? a shop in Quebec, Canada called Simon André figured out how to swap a single-motor Tesla Model 3 to a dual-motor setup, and part of doing that meant busting into the power inverter's software to reconfigure it. Once the shop hacked its way through Tesla's IP, it found that switching to dual motors wasn't the only thing it could do. It could also add Tesla's 50 horsepower Acceleration Boost without clearance from the Tesla mothership." writes CNET: "Acceleration Boost usually would set you back $2,000 -- that's one hell of an in-app purchase -- but once this shop figured out how to unlock the boost itself. Now, the shop's owner spun off a new (and likely short-lived) company called Ingenext that offers an increase of just $1,100 as the "Boost 50" upgrade. even a full conversion from Model 3 Dual Motor to Performance spec which it calls the Ghost upgrade and adds 150 horsepower to your car."

HYUNDAI AND KIA HONING HEAT-PUMP TECH
"Hyundai and Kia, which share their parent company and some research and development resources, began using heat pumps in 2014 on the first-generation Kia Soul EV, and now most (but not all) of the two automakers' electric cars use them. As with other automakers, the heat pumps in current Hyundai and Kia vehicles turn refrigerant from a liquid to a gas, which is used to heat the cabin. This is more efficient than the resistance heating used in traditional systems, and minimizes the amount of energy drawn from the battery pack." says Green Car Reports: "The latest system is able to scavenge heat from a wide array of components, including the drive motor, inverter, onboard charger, and the battery pack itself, according to Hyundai. That heat is what turns the liquid refrigerant into a gas. A recent test of 20 EVs by the Norwegian Automotive Federation (NAF) appeared to prove Hyundai and Kia's point. In that test, a European-spec Hyundai Kona Electric not only recorded the longest range in cold weather, it also came closest to its European WLTP range rating, achieving 91% of that figure. Hyundai and Kia said they are continuing to test and refine their heat-pump tech, hoping to make additional improvements for next-generation EVs."
ALL-ELECTRIC CITROEN E-C4 CROSSOVER DEBUT ANNOUNCED FOR JUNE 30
"The C4 Cactus was one of the quirkiest looking recent Citroens that really hearkened back to the wacky character of older models sold by the dual chevron brand. Now it’s going to be replaced by an all-new model that ditches the Cactus from its name and is also available with a pure electric powertrain for the first time ever. This all-electric model is going to be called the e-C4 and Citroen has now confirmed that it will be officially unveiled on June 30" reports Yahoo! News: "What we already knew about the model was the fact that it is going to be underpinned by the same CMP platform atop which smaller models like the Peugeot e-208 and e-2008, as well as the DS3 Crossback are built. And the electric e-C4 variant will most likely feature the exact same battery pack and motor setup. This means it’s going to have 136 bhp and 260 Nm (192 pound-feet) of torque and it will draw from a 50 kWh battery pack. The similar-size e-2008 has a claimed WLTP range of 310 km (193 miles), and we expect the e-C4 to be very similar in this respect."

LG CHEM HAS BEGUN MASS PRODUCTION OF NCM712 BATTERIES IN POLAND
"LG Chem began mass production of NCM712 batteries in the 1st quarter of 2020. These batteries dramatically cut down on the use of cobalt in electric vehicle batteries (7 parts nickel to 1 part cobalt to 2 parts manganese), thus helping to cut costs. These batteries also have greater energy density than previous batteries" says Clean Technica: "The Wroclaw LG Chem plant is the largest EV battery production facility in Europe and mostly produces batteries for the Renault Zoe and Volkswagen Group vehicles (such as the Audi e-tron and Porsche Taycan). These particular batteries, “LGX E78” batteries, are reportedly being used in the Volkswagen ID.3 and new Renault Zoe."
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only?
