NEXT-GEN BMW PHEVS WILL HAVE CLAIMED 100 KM / 62 MILES OF ELECTRIC RANGE

"BMW’s current crop of plug-in hybrids manage around 50 km (31 miles) of pure-electric driving on a single charge of their battery pack. If you really drive them gingerly, with a feather for a right foot, you can eek out up to 65 km (40 miles), but the lengths you have to go to in order to achieve that don’t make for practical daily driving." says InsideEVs: "But this could soon double, according to a recent report, so we could start to see them reach 100 km (62 miles) in the not too distant future. BMW Blog quotes BMW management board member Pieter Nota as saying: We are of course continuing to develop the drive system and will offer up to 100 kilometres of electric range in the future, depending on the segment. By the end of this year, we will already have a total of 12 basic plug-in hybrid models available, including the new MINI Countryman and the BMW X2. BMW’s smaller plug-in hybrids have a 12 kWh battery pack whose usable capacity is 10.4 kWh. The brand’s larger plug-in models, like the recently launched X5 45e, have a much bigger 24 kWh pack (with 21.6 kWh usable capacity); this model has a claimed electric range of up to 87 km (54 miles)."

2021 BMW X5 PLUG-IN HYBRID SUV: MORE POWER, MORE THAN DOUBLE THE ELECTRIC RANGE

"The 2021 BMW X5 xDrive 45e is the second generation of the German automaker's mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV. Unveiled Wednesday for the U.S., it gets more than double the electric range of its predecessor, but also boasts more power." according to Green Car Reports: "Estimated EPA range will increase to 30 miles, up from 14 miles for the previous-generation X5 plug-in hybrid. That's due in large part to a bigger, 24-kilowatt-hour, battery pack. That's huge for a plug-in hybrid (the previous-generation model had a 12-kWh pack), and the same size as the battery pack in the original Nissan Leaf. Running on both gasoline and electric power, the X5 will do 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds, which is 1.2 seconds quicker than before, according to BMW. In electric mode, top speed is electronically limited to 84 mph—up from 70 mph before. In hybrid mode, the X5 is electronically limited to 130 mph, or 146 mph with optional performance tires."

COME 2022, NEW-CAR LAUNCHES WILL NEARLY DOUBLE, HALF OF THEM EVS OR HYBRIDS

"In its annual "Car Wars" report, Bank of America Merrill Lynch predicts a wave of new-car launches coming in 2022 at nearly double the rate of the past two decades, with a stepped-up pace continuing in 2023 and 2024. And nearly half of those new-product introductions will be EVs or hybrids." writes Autoblog: "EVs and hybrids are a big driver of that total and are expected to comprise 49 percent of the total new-model intros over the next four years (EVs being 26 percent and hybrids 23 percent). The biggest increase by segment is — you guessed it — crossovers, which account for nearly half the total (49 percent). Light trucks at 28 percent are the next-biggest segment. The three passenger-car segments — luxury/sport, mid/large, and small — each comprise less than 10 percent of the total."

On the list of EV makers on the Bank of America analysis: Honda, Ford, Nissan, GM, Toyota and FCA.

TESLA UPGRADES US-MADE MODEL 3 WITH WIRELESS CHARGER AND USB-C PORTS

"Tesla has upgraded Model 3 vehicles built at Fremont Factory in the US with features first introduced in Model Y and Chinese-made Model 3 vehicles, like a wireless phone charger and USB-C ports." according to electrek: "Tesla started Model Y deliveries in March and when the automaker delivered the first few units, we were surprised to learn that the new electric SUV came standard with a Qi wireless phone charger. In Model 3, it is only sold as an aftermarket item and doesn’t come standard with the electric car. Model Y also comes with USB-C ports unlike Model 3. Last month, Tesla added those features to Model 3 vehicles built in China. Now we learn that Tesla has indeed updated Model 3 vehicles made in the US with the Qi wireless phone charger and USB-C ports."

TESLA HAS TOP RANGE IN WORLD’S LONGEST EV RANGE TEST

"Norwegian road assistance company NAF has completed the world’s longest EV range test. The company tested 29 of Norway’s most popular EVs. They tested the actual range in the summer, what happens when EVs go into power-saving mode, and how they charge in heat degrees." says Clean Technica: "During testing, they ran the cars until they were completely out of power in order to measure the actual range and consumption on typical Norwegian roads. The test was taken by ordinary drivers in regular traffic on a route that consists of city and highway driving with speeds ranging between 60 km an hour to 110 km an hour. This test is a followup to the winter version. Each of the vehicles was tested on the same day and took the same route. The drivers were instructed to drive normally, but defensively, and were encouraged to use regeneration actively in both city driving and downhill."

THESE 29 EVS ALL EXCEEDED THEIR ADVERTISED RANGES — WHICH IS PRETTY AWESOME

"According to a road test carried out by Norwegian motoring magazine, Motor.no, and the Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF), 29 EVs from leading manufacturers all exceeded their WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure) quoted ranges." writes The NExt Web: "The Nissan e-NV 200, which is actually an all-electric commercial vehicle, came out on top by exceeding its manufacturer quoted range by 39%. If you run a business and want an electric fleet, don’t ignore the e-NV 200! For regular passenger cars: the Opel Ampera-e exceeded its quoted range by 21%, the Renault Zoé went 19% further than expected, and the Hyundai Kona traveled 18% further than its WLTP range would suggest. Take a look for yourself at the best and worst performers"

EV SALES PREDICTED TO SURGE AS SHOWROOMS REOPEN

"Google Trends data show that, since the PM's launch of the COVID-19 recovery strategy (11 May), there has been a significant boom in demand across the automotive industry - so much so that the demand is now parallel with the numbers pre-lockdown, this surge in demand is especially evident in the electric vehicle industry." reports Electric Vehicles ResearchWhile search volume for 'electric car' hasn't yet returned to its pre-COVID levels, there's every indication that it will do soon. Specifically, the Tesla Model S and Model X have seen strong recoveries, matching and even exceeding interest this time last year. Demand for the compact BMW i3 has recently returned to its pre-COVID levels, while the higher-end Audi e-Tron has already exceeded this. This is a strong recovery considering the demand fell by 70.1% and 63.5% respectively from the 8th of March to the 22nd of March. The Road to Recovery Dashboard for Electric Vehicles will continue to be updated on a weekly basis to track the progress of the industry-wide recovery from COVID-19."

RENAULT SEES GROWING THREAT FROM IMPORTS OF CHINESE EVS

"A flood of Chinese electric cars coming ashore in Norway -- one of the biggest markets for battery-powered vehicles in Europe -- is a sign of the “ferocious competition” awaiting the region’s automakers." says Automotive NEws Europe: "Tighter emissions rules across the European Union have prodded automakers to lean into the transition to electric powertrains or face big fines this year. To further spur electric vehicle sales, the governments of France and Germany have included extra incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles in economic stimulus packages. The arrival of Chinese brands in Europe is a relatively recent phenomenon, and they are converging on the Nordic market at a tricky time for European automakers. British brand MG Motor, owned by Chinese giant SAIC Motor, has sold 600 of its ZS EVs in Norway, while a number of other companies are preparing their entry this year, according to the Norwegian Automobile Federation. These include BYD (with the Tang), the Chinese electric-vehicle maker backed by Warren Buffett, and Polestar, the venture between Volvo Cars and Zhejiang Geely Holding. Alibaba-backed Xpeng Motors also is planning to start sales in the country, as is Shanghai-based automaker Aiways (U5). Another startup, Byton, has promised a 2021 launch for its M-Byte crossover in select European markets, and BAIC Chairman Xu Heyi said last year he wanted to launch the Arcfox electric brand in Europe, without giving a timeframe."
