Show #810
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 15th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
LUCID: DON'T CALL US "TESLA KILLERS"
"With a brand-new, state-of-the-art factory nearing completion in the Southwest desert and an energy-dense battery pack using cylindrical cells, it's all-too tempting to set up a rivalry between Lucid Motors and Tesla. Heck, it's a trope that we've been guilty of using in the past." says Ars Technica: "But it's a bad take, according to Peter Rawlinson, Lucid's CEO and CTO. "Please don't describe us as a Tesla killer," he told me. "The world's big enough that we can both thrive and prosper alongside each other.". the Air will use a 900V electrical architecture, higher than even the Porsche Taycan. Rawlinson said that the Air has also moved to a new in-house silicon carbide inverter, as well as a switch from induction to permanent magnet motors front and rear. The Air's cylindrical lithium-ion cells will be made by LG Chem, but Lucid has designed and will build the packs itself. And Formula E has contributed to the management of the packs—Lucid supplies batteries to all the teams in that race series. The company's experience in Formula E has taught it a lot about predictive modeling of degradation."
Peter Rawlinson was VP on Vehicle Engineering at Tesla before 2013.
He said: "They're our own design, which is very innovative—they've got very low cogging torque, so ultra-efficient. We've got our own epicyclic reduction transmission, our own differential, all which is super-innovative, state of the art. The rotor will spin to 20,000rpm, and each of those in standard form is rated at 600hp (447kW)," he said, adding that the combined motor, gearbox, differential, and inverter weighs in at just 160lbs (73kg). The key metric is volumetric power density, which is creeping up very close to 17kW per liter," Rawlinson told me. "And I think that's unprecedented—that's twice as good as any competitor out there that I'm aware of. That's a cornerstone of what we've done with LG Chem now in our production supply agreement. We've worked with them to help develop the cell chemistry to a much higher standard, particularly making it degrade less as a consequence of repeated fast charging. That's important because the 900V architecture has been developed very much with our fast-charge network partner Electrify America in mind."

VW ID.4 MAKES ITS BEST KIA IMPRESSION IN NEW SPY PHOTOS
"In late March this year, our photographers caught a prototype of the Volkswagen ID.4 that was masked to look like an Opel Grandland X. The same strategy was used by the company’s engineers and test drivers in November last year, and they’ve done it again. This time around, however, they’ve disguised the all-electric crossover to look like a Kia." says Motor1.com: "According to preliminary information, power will be provided by two electric motors for a combined output of approximately 302 horsepower. The battery electric vehicle should be capable of covering up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) in the WLTP test at a single charge, which will be around 277 miles in the EPA evaluation."

2021 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME VS 2020 FORD ESCAPE PHEV SPEC COMPARISON
Price
Ford: SE PHEV retails for $33,040, while the others are priced at $35,620 and $38,835 respectively.
RAV4: Pricing has not yet been shared though we assume it will start around the $40k mark in the US, and somewhere between $47,000 and $50,000 in Canada.
"The Toyota RAV4 Prime is meant to do it all. The Prime is based on the Hybrid’s 2.5-litre 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine however the hybrid is further boosted by the more powerful motor-generators and new high-capacity 17.8-kWh Lithium-Ion battery increase system output to 302-horsepower, from 219." says Motor Illustrated: "Part of the setup is an electric motor on the rear axle that has no physical link to the front. This second motor is standard on all RAV4 Hybrid and Prime thus all are AWD. Performance is plentiful with a 0-100 km/h time of only 6.2 seconds (0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds). Fun fact: This makes the RAV4 Prime the second fastest accelerating Toyota after the GR Supra. The combined fuel consumption rating of 2.6Le/100km, or 90 MPGe. The battery-only range is 67 kilometers, or 42 miles. The 2020 Ford Escape PHEV is different in that it is FWD only, contrary to the Hybrid version, which will prove to be an obstacle for much of Canada and the Northern regions of the US. It too is powered by an Atkinson-cycle 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine and it, with the associated electric motor, produces a total system output of 221-horsepower. The 14.4-kWh battery-only range is rated at least 48 kilometers in Canada, or 37 miles in the US."
RAV4 - Heat pump too. 3kW onboard charger as standard.

ELECTRIFY CANADA EXPANDS NETWORK OF HIGH-SPEED EV CHARGERS TO BRITISH COLUMBIA
"With the opening of its first British Columbia station in Merritt, B.C, Electrify Canada today announces its official expansion into Western Canada. The high-speed electric vehicle charging network will also announce an additional eight charging station locations expected to open throughout the province by the end of this year." says Tom Molougney for InsideEVs: "Electrify Canada already has four charging station sites open in Ontario, with fifteen more in the planning stage in Ontario and Quebec, so it's good to see the western part of the country finally getting some love also. Electrify Canada's first phase of deployment includes the installation of a total of 32 charging station sites. Those include the nineteen in Quebec and Ontario and thirteen in Alberta and British Colombia."

TESLA RECEIVES APPROVAL TO BECOME AN ELECTRIC UTILITY PROVIDER IN THE UK
"Tesla has officially been granted an electricity generation license in the United Kingdom, in response to the electric car maker’s application last April. Reports indicate that the approval paves the way for Tesla to establish a virtual power plant in the region, which would be managed by its custom Autobidder software, a real-time trading and control platform that enables power producers to monetize battery assets." says Simon at TEslarati: "The UK’s recent approval for Tesla’s application is a noteworthy milestone for Tesla Energy, whose potential remains largely untapped. Tesla Energy is a big business, and it builds on two of the company’s most prominent strengths: software and batteries. This is one of the reasons why Tesla’s big battery in South Australia, the Hornsdale Power Reserve, has been so successful. The massive Powerpack farm is managed by Autobidder, the same system that the company is reportedly poised to utilize in the UK."

Electrify America’s network, part of the FordPass Charging Network, offers the largest number of high-powered public charging stations on the market today.
100 KWH TESLA MODEL 3 APPEARS ONLINE
"We learned late last year from Twitter user @greentheonly that Tesla’s Model 3 firmware had contained references to a 100 kWh battery pack since at least March of 2019. Speculation was interesting at the time, but no Model 3 vehicles had been found to include that size battery pack." writes The Street.com: "That may have changed today, with Twitter user @zeus7f1 sharing a screenshot of a Tesla Model 3 display in Factory Mode. While a screenshot like this could be easily faked, the pack size is listed as 100 kWh here."
33% more energy.
Long LONG Range?
@greentheonly: I know they exist. Was hoping to get direct access to one soon, but it looks like you beat me to it ;)
Elon took to Twitter to DENY the pack was in development. So...it's done?!
