Show #814

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 19th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

West Coast States Are Teaming Up to Build an Electric Highway

"The West Coast is preparing for a future where giant diesel transport trucks go electric. Utilities and state agencies in California, Oregon, and Washington announced a plan to transform highway infrastructure that would speed the transition." writes Gizmodo: "The report calls for electrifying main shipping routes across the region by installing charging stations for freight trucks. The plan is to ultimately create electric charging stations every 50 miles along Interstate 5, which runs from up the West Coast, by 2025. First, the states will build 27 stations for medium-duty vehicles, such as delivery vans. However, by 2030, 14 of these stations will be upgraded to also charge big rig trucks. Most of the stations will be in California, but Oregon will have five and Washington six."

Tesla eyes Texas for Cybertruck factory site

"Tesla Inc. is zeroing in on an area in southeast Austin, Texas, for the electric-car maker’s second U.S. auto factory as Elon Musk prepares to choose a site for production base of a new pickup truck." says Dana at Bloomberg: "The company has filed an application with an Austin-area school district in Travis County seeking a tax abatement, according to publicly filed documents. Musk, Tesla’s CEO, announced in March the Silicon Valley-based automaker has begun scouting for sites to produce its Cybertruck, which is still in development, and Model Y crossover for customers on the East Coast. The 4 to 5 million-square-foot plant would employ 5,000 workers and become Tesla’s fourth for vehicle assembly. The company bought its first factory in Fremont, Calif., from Toyota Motor Corp. in the wake of the global financial crisis for just $42 million."

Tesla activates cabin-facing camera

"Tesla rolled out the software update on June 18 and included improvements to Driving Visualization, Backup Camera, Dashcam Viewer, and Walk-Away Door Lock systems. However, the Cabin Camera feature, which is new to the company’s fleet, intends to create a safer vehicle in the future by studying how different types of collisions impact humans." says Teslarati: "Tesla’s Cabin Camera has been a focus of many owners and enthusiasts. It remained dormant until January when CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the camera could be used to record intruders as a part of the company’s Sentry Mode feature. Now, it is receiving more functionalities, and more will likely be added in the near future."

Release notes say:

"Help Tesla continue to develop safer vehicles by sharing camera data from your vehicle. This update will allow you to enable the built-in cabin camera above the rearview mirror. If enabled, Tesla will automatically capture images and a short video clip just prior to a collision or safety event to help engineers develop safety features and enhancements in the future. As usual, you can adjust your data sharing preferences by tapping Controls > Safety & Security > DATA SHARING > Allow Camera Analytics. Note: Cabin camera images and video clips will not be associated with your VIN to protect your privacy.”

Also in the update:

"You can now view video streams coming from your side repeater cameras for added visibility around the vehicle. When the backup camera is visible, simply swipe to display the repeater camera video feeds. To make Sentry Mode Videos easier to review, we have added a red dot along the video scrubber to indicate the moment when a Sentry Mode event was triggered. When playing a Sentry Mode video, the dashcam viewer will skip ahead and begin playback right before this point. You now have the option to disable Walk-Away Door Lock when your vehicle is parked at Home, Tap controls > Locks and select ‘Exclude Home.’ Your vehicle will now precondition the battery when navigating to third party charging stations in addition to Superchargers. As usual, you can find a list of nearby third-party charging locations by tapping on the lightning bolt icon on the bottom of your touchscreen."

German government is building superchargers

"the new National Centre for Charging Infrastructure in Germany, is inviting tenders for the construction and operation of the largest rapid charging network yet to be built in the country. " reports electrive: "NOW’s National Centre for Charging Infrastructure is preparing the tender for a gigantic rapid charging network together with the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMVI). The project will start in the fourth quarter at the latest, then aiming for 1,000 sites with up to two-digit and in some cases even three-digit numbers of DC-charge points. The minimum power of a DC charge point is 150 kW. The sites must be expandable. Connection to the medium-voltage grid is, therefore, a prerequisite."

Tesla Megapack that switches out fuel peaker plants

"Tesla has secured a massive new Megapack project that is being deployed in lieu of a planned gas peaker plant in California." says electrek: "The idea is that giant battery systems would charge from the grid when demand is low and discharge at peak demand to help reduce the peak of power production.  Ventura County, California was going to allow the construction of a new gas-fired power plant by NRG Energy to supply peak power to Southern California Edison, but the electric utility pivoted to energy storage instead and plans to deploy several battery systems. Last month, they selected Strata Solar to develop the biggest of those battery systems, a 100 MW/400 MWh battery energy storage system."

Tesla Cybertruck to make public debut at Petersen Museum

"Want to see the super futuristic Tesla Cybertruck for yourself? That can be a reality for anyone visiting the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles." reports CNET: "The museum said Thursday that for one week starting this Saturday, June 20, it will host the Cybertruck as it reopens to the public after closing down due to the coronavirus pandemic. For Tesla fans, the museum has more to offer than the Cybertruck, though it will no doubt be a massive draw. Through a partnership with the electric carmaker, the Petersen also houses a Model S and first-generation Roadster prototype. They reside on the second floor in an alternating exhibits area of the facility."

Renault Zoe Returns To #1 In France

"When one looks at last month’s best sellers, we can see the market returning to normal. After losing April’s Best Seller title for the first time in 7 (seven) years, the Renault Zoe is back in the lead, winning last month’s Best Seller trophy with a 486 unit advantage over April’s Best Seller, the Peugeot 208 EV. With PSA hoping to ramp up its production during the following months, in order to tickle the Renault Zoe’s lead again, the question is, will it be able to do so? To be continued…" says CleanTehcnica
