Show #816
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 21st June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
TESLA CYBERTRUCK IS AT THE PETERSEN MUSEUM
"Like most Tesla products pre-release, the Cybertruck is shrouded in an air of mystery. Nobody’s really seen it anywhere except for the reveal event. There have been some videos of Elon Musk driving it around, and a "Jay Leno’s Garage" episode aired, but the public hasn’t been allowed to get up close and personal with it yet. That’s changed this week, because the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles currently has it on display. " says Autoblog today: "If you happen to be located in the area, you can go and see the Cybertruck in person. Petersen is taking reservations for entry to the museum — there are no walk-ins for the time being. The Cybertruck itself won’t be hanging out for long, though. Petersen says the truck will only be in the museum through July 5. The stainless steel is striking and the truck is intimidating. It’s huge, and weird, and it still looks like it’s from outer space."

TESLA GIGA SHANGHAI IS SEEING A MYSTERIOUS EXPANSON
"The pace of Gigafactory Shanghai’s construction has reached a point where it is now normal to see massive buildings being built from the ground up in but a few months. Over the past few months, all eyes were focused on the site’s Phase 2A zone, which happens to be the upcoming Model Y factory. Recent flyovers of the Gigafactory Shanghai complex show that the construction activities in the area are now going far beyond the Model Y plant." according to Simon at Teslarati: "As could be seen in a recent video posted by Tesla enthusiast and drone operator Jason Yang, the Model Y factory in Gigafactory Shanghai is quickly coming to form. But another story is forming right beside Tesla’s expansive Model Y factory in China. What is interesting is that Tesla has so far been very quiet about the nature of these upcoming structures."

PORSCHE TAYCAN CROSS TURISMO SPIED TESTING WITH SEDAN COUNTERPART
"The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is official – at least we've seen several spy shots to prove that. Plus, Stuttgart has already confirmed the all-electric wagon's launch towards the end of this year. With that said, Porsche has all its hands on deck in developing the production version of the Mission E Cross Turismo." says Motor1.com: "Our spy photographers were able to spot the Taycan Cross Turismo more than two months ago testing in the snow. This time, however, recent spy shots show it testing with its sedan counterpart. Despite that, the Cross Turismo is, of course, highly based on the Taycan's architecture; it's the first among the Taycan-based derivatives – the pillar stone of Porsche's push for electrification. As such, expect the same powertrain options for the Taycan Cross Turismo, with power outputs ranging from 530 horsepower (395 kilowatts) to 761 hp (567 kW). The Taycan Cross Turismo will hit the global stage towards the end of this year."

INFINITI PLANS TO LAUNCH ONE PURE EV, ONE 'GAS-POWERED EV' TO BECOME SUSTAINABLE
"Infiniti has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and it drop several models in order to be prevented from losing money. But at the same time, new models will be added to the range, even electrified ones and it seems that all will be performance-oriented." reports InsideEVs: "According to a report published on Automotive News, which interviewed Infiniti’s chairman, Peyman Kargar, who confirmed plans to introduce one pure EV, as well as a "gas-powered EV." While the former seems like a straightforward model, the latter has us a bit intrigued. It will apparently be a performance-oriented electric vehicle that will have a rather small battery pack (it will rely on the gasoline engine to run continually and produce power); it will also be branded 'e-Power,' suggesting it will be similar to other models sold by Nissan under the same moniker. However, it will be different from Nissan’s other e-Power models because it will be a performance-focused model. We don’t know exactly how quick this new model will be, but this information, along with the model’s name will be disclosed in a few months."

ELECTRIC VEHICLE CAR SALES WILL BOUNCE BACK RAPIDLY
Google Trends data show that, since the PM’s launch of the COVID-19 recovery strategy (11 May), there has been a significant boom in demand across the automotive industry - so much so that the demand is now parallel with the numbers pre-lockdown, this surge in demand is especially evident in the electric vehicle industry.
The Road to Recovery Dashboard: Electric Vehicles is part of a tool built by LeaseFetcher, a car leasing comparison site based in Scotland. “The dashboard aims to observe long term and immediate changes in demand and will help inform predictions about the future for the electric vehicle and automotive industry,” says Will Craig, Founder of LeaseFetcher.
Pulling its raw data from Google Trends on a weekly basis, the tool provides an invaluable insight into consumer sentiment and behaviour.
In March, demand across the automotive industry nosedives. Now, following the announcement on the 11th of May, introducing step one of the recovery strategy, demand is once again on the rise.
While search volume for ‘electric car’ hasn’t yet returned to its pre-COVID, record-breaking levels, there’s every indication that it will do soon. ‘Electric car’ has already surpassed 2019 levels.
TRANSITION TO ELECTRIC CARS COULD BOOST UK ECONOMY BY £24BN
"NEW GOVERNMENT-BACKED research claims that a switch to electric vehicles could inject a much-needed £24bn into the nation’s economy over the next five years. The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), a collaboration between the government and the UK’s car making industry, concluded that the transition from petrol and diesel-powered vehicles to electrified powertrains could create a wealth of opportunities for British companies, The Times reported." on driving.co.uk: "The APC broke down the £24bn of potential market growth into three sections: £12bn in batteries; £10bn in “power electronics”; and £2bn in “electric machines”. Power electronics refers to devices that control electricity in a car, while electric machines manage the conversion of electricity into mechanical energy."

QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS
Richard S Wiggins
Every time I tell people about my EV, they always tell me, “Yes, I would love to own an EV but, they are just to expensive,”. So what do you do.

In 2017 Hurricane Harvey disrupted gasoline supplies here in San Antonio, and I finally pulled the trigger on buying an EV with a Chevy Bolt. It's great fun to drive and reduce how much I spend on Gas. I was able to share this experience with a co-worker and gave her a ride in my car. She then bought a Chevy Bolt. Since then we have both bought plug-in hybrids, a Chevy Volt for me and a Prius Prime for her. We both drive about 80 miles a day between hospitals, clinics and dialysis units, and save about $6,000 a year on gas. Earlier this year we both also invested in community solar as well. It has been a source of satisfaction for me to have positively influenced her journey into EVs and green power.

I was talking with a gentleman who is a strong advocate for increased oil drilling here in the U.S. I asked why he felt so strongly about that, and he said it was because he wanted our country to have greater energy independence and not have to rely on oil from countries who "don''t like us." I told him that my car (a 2016 Chevy Volt) rarely uses gas and that most of the time it runs on electricity. What I said next left him temporarily speechless. I said, "Richard, the thing about electricity is that it's 100% American made. We don't import it. We make it here. In fact, you can even make it yourself by putting some panels on your roof. That is true energy independence." After a pause, he simply said, "You're right."

Took my little nieces in my in my plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt. When the battery ran out and it switched to gas they said, "Oh no! We're polluting! The earth is getting ruined!"
