Show #847
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 22nd July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
VW ID.3 AVAILABLE TO ORDER FOR PRE-BOOKERS
"Volkswagen has opened the order books for its ID.3, allowing those who placed a deposit to specify and confirm their car. The ID.3 1st Edition costs £38,880 (exc. PiCG) and features a 58 kWh (net) battery for a range of 260 miles on a charge. Ultra-rapid charging can be completed at up to 100 kW, allowing drivers to add around 180 miles of range in half an hour." says NExt Green Car: "Powered by a 150 kW electric motor, the ID.3 completes the 0-62mph sprint in 7.3 seconds, and matches a Golf GTI's 0-37mph time."

Whats the take from Top Gear? They say: "Cheaper models with less range, performance and kit will follow, but if you want to be among the first to get your mitts on VW’s purpose-built EV, you’ll need to part with £38,880. That’s sounds like a lot, but remember the UK Government will give you £3,000 off (because electricity), so you’ll actually only pay £35,880. Still a lot – that makes the ID.3 1st Edition around £5,000 more than a top-spec Mini Electric or Honda E, but just under £5,000 cheaper than an entry-level Tesla Model 3. The 1st Edition gets a 58kWh battery good for 260 miles of range. The Model 3 Standard Range Plus can do 254 miles, while the Honda and Mini can only do around 140 miles at most."

BMW SHUTS DOWN FACTORY FOR OVER A MONTH TO PREPARE FOR I4 ELECTRIC CAR PRODUCTION
"BMW announced today that it is going to shut down its Munich factory for over a month in order to prepare for the production of its next electric car, the BMW i4. It’s not uncommon for automakers to have scheduled production shutdowns in order to upgrade manufacturing lines, but this announcement from BMW today was surprising due to its length." says electrek: "The Munich factory is where BMW currently produces the 3 Series and it employs 7,800 people. Shutting down the plant for 6 weeks is going to have a major impact on the automaker’s inventory. The BMW i4 is built on BMW’s upcoming fifth-generation electric powertrain. The technology is supposed to enable BMW to produce all-electric, hybrid, and diesel/petrol cars all on the same production line. Plant director Robert Engelhorn commented on the remodel in Munich: “We are gearing up our Munich plant for the future. Once remodelling is finished, we will be able to produce vehicles with diesel, petrol and hybrid drive trains, as well as the fully-electric BMW i4, all on the same line. This will allow us to respond flexibly to customer demand.” BMW claims that the electric sedan is going to be able to achieve a range of 600 km (373 miles) on an 80kWh battery."

AUDI IS RESEARCHING BIDIRECTIONAL CHARGING TECHNOLOGY
"Increasing network stability, lowering electricity costs, and contributing to climate protection – that is the vision that Audi and the Hager Group are pursuing. The incorporation of the electric car into the domestic grid is at the core of an innovative research project on bidirectional charging. This offers major advantages in combination with a photovoltaic system in particular. Excess PV electricity can be stored temporarily and output as needed." says VW: ". At night or during non-productive times of the rate, the car then uses inexpensive electricity to charge up to the desired target SOC (state of charge). Bidirectional charging also provides a security of supply that extends beyond pure cost optimization: In the event of a blackout, the system can supply the house with energy via the high-performance HV battery or it can even operate a building without a grid connection independently in what is known as stand-alone operation."

RENAULT MARKS MAJOR EV SHARING ORDER FROM THE UK
"The UK-based electric car subscription service Onto (formerly Evezy) has ordered 1,100 Renault Zoe. The first units were already delivered." according to electrive: "The remaining vehicles are to be handed over to Onto within six months, according to Renault UK. Originally the subscription provider (then still under the name Evezy) had ordered 180 Zoe. The Zoe ordered at that time and also the now newly delivered Zoe should already be available for the customers. For a monthly fee, Onto provides the car, insurance, breakdown service, maintenance and even charging current. No down payment is required, the subscription can be cancelled or changed every month. According to Renault, the entry-level price for the Zoe is 339 pounds per month – but only for cars of the “previous generation”, i.e. those models that have already been ordered in 2017. What the subscription to the new Zoes with a 50 kW DC charger will cost is not clear from the announcement."

SKODA ENYAQ IV: 500KM-RANGE ELECTRIC SUV TO MAKE SEPTEMBER DEBUT
"Skoda has revealed its upcoming Enyaq iV will make its world debut in Prague on 1 September.
The brand’s first electric SUV will be the first production model based on the MEB electric car platform and boast a range of up to 500km, which is around 311 miles. " says leasing.com: "The Enyaq will be available in rear- or four-wheel drive and offer a choice of three battery sizes and five power variants, depending on requirements.
The entry-level model is the Skoda Enyaq iV 50. This has the smallest battery and will offer a maximum range of up to 340km (211 miles). Next up is the Skoda Enyaq iV 60 fitted with a 62-kWh battery that can deliver range of up to 390km (242 miles). TESLA WILL CHANGE ALLOY FOR CYBERTRUCK
" Tesla will be changing the alloy it uses for the Cybertruck, CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday. After replying to Teslarati’s coverage of SpaceX building a new full-scale Starship prototype, Musk confirmed to a follower on Twitter that the automaker would also be updating the alloy of the all-electric Cybertruck that is set to begin production in late 2021." according to JOey at Teslarati: The truck’s durability was based on the fact that the 30X cold-rolled exoskeleton was the best that Tesla could find. The company was transparent that if there were a better material out there, they would use it. It seems that Tesla may have found something more durable, and it may be in tune with the new Starship. Tesla has been leveraging SpaceX welding techniques in its vehicles as well."

MERCEDES EQC SPIED ALREADY GETTING READY FOR NEW GENERATION
"If you live in the United States, you still can’t put an order for the EQC, Mercedes-Benz’s first all-electric production vehicle on the global market. Even if you check the brand’s official website for the country, you’ll find the EV SUV under the Future category. "Meanwhile, as weird as it may sound, the brand is already working on the next-generation EQC." says MOtor1.com: "why is Mercedes already working on a successor for today’s model when the latter is not even on sale in the United States yet? Simply because the first-gen EQC is based on the EVA-I architecture which is also used by the current C-Class and GLC. It’s a platform designed with combustion engines in mind and there’s limited space for batteries and other physical limitations engineers had to deal with. The new EQC, however, will ride on a new, EV-dedicated architecture that should also underpin a number of other compact EVs from the brand. This platform should be capable of accommodating a larger battery pack and should also provide other benefits compared to the current one. According to the initial details, Mercedes has given the new EQC the green light for a launch at some point in 2022. This could very well mean customers in the US won’t even get the first-gen model at all."
