Show #885

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 8th September 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Welcome to two new Patrons.

RAYMOND ROWLEDGE and MYLES HAMILTON are both new Executive Producers.

It is Lucid Air week. Tomorrow, Wednesday, is the livestream unveil.

VIDEO: ELON MUSK DRIVES VW ID.3

According to Handelsblatt last week “When Elon Musk’s private jet, the “Gulfstream G650”, took off from Berlin-Schönefeld Airport on Wednesday at 9:17 pm, everyone thought: The Tesla boss’s visit to Germany is over. But only 26 minutes later the plane landed at Braunschweig Airport. The reason for the stopover was a visit to VW boss Herbert Diess.” A VW official confirmed the meeting between the two CEOs, but they didn’t elaborate on the nature of it."

But now we know - it was to drive the ID.3 alongside Chairman of the Board of VW Herbert Diess.

Herbert Diess posted on LinkedIn this update: " "We are ready for take off!" In the comments under the footage he also said, "Thanks for the visit, Elon! Hope you like the video. It was great driving the ID.3 with you! You were just quite critical with the available torque at higher speed. I told you: "Yes, we are on the runway - but no need for take off - its not a sports car.” For this you should try our Porsche Taycan. Looking forward to our next meeting! "

And here's the audio. The video has captions because it seems to be recorded on a shaly mobile phone with poor sound. Elon is driving, and Diess in the passenger seat.

Herbert Diess took to Linked in later in the day on Monday to deny the speculation that the new execs had been thrashing out the idea of some for of collaboration between the two automakers.: "“Just to be clear: We just drove the ID.3 and had a chat - there is no deal/cooperation in the making.”"

TESLA LOOKING AT BECOMING AN ELECTRICITY PROVIDER IN GERMANY

" Elon Musk appears to be opening a new front in the European battle for electric car supremacy: the power behind the wheel. Musk's Tesla has recently acquired a license that will enable the carmaker to trade electricity across Western Europe, and the company has also been surveying customers in Germany about potentially using Tesla electricity in their cars." says Autoblog: "It could also open the way for Tesla to use power stored by customers to help balance the electricity grid, an increasingly important service in Germany as it becomes ever more dependent on volatile wind and solar power."

TESLA DEVELOPING AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST VIRTUAL POWER PROJECT

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency has issued AUS$8.2 million in funding for the development of what is claimed to be the largest virtual power plant in the country. The funding will be used by Tesla Motors Australia to install battery energy storage and rooftop solar systems for 3,000 residential consumers in South Australia." says SmartEnergy.com: "Tesla will install 5kW of rooftop solar and a 13.5kWh Powerwall battery system at each property, at no cost to the tenant. The phase supports Tesla’s ambition to create the world’s largest virtual power plant comprising 50,000 solar and storage systems across residential and private dwellings. The 3000 additional systems will participate in AEMO’s virtual power plant (VPP) trial to provide a range of grid stability services by exporting excess energy to the National Electricity Market."

Move beyond automotive, into how we power the planet.

Scale - 180,000 cars in the first half of 2020, but that's about to explode

From Tesla.com: "Autobidder provides independent power producers, utilities and capital partners the ability to autonomously monetize battery assets. Autobidder is a real-time trading and control platform that provides value-based asset management and portfolio optimization, enabling owners and operators to configure operational strategies that maximize revenue according to their business objectives and risk preferences"

BMW MAY BE PLANNING ELECTRIC 3 SERIES

"An electric version of BMW’s 7 and 5 Series has already been officially confirmed. According to a British media report, there will also be a BEV offshoot for the 3-series – but not for several years." according to Electrive: "According to information from Autocar, the electric 3-series is to be based on the BMW i4 and could adopt the model designation i3 when production of the current i3 comes to an end. The magazine refers to “sources that are familiar with the production plan”. According to BMW’s latest statement on the future of the current i3, the latter is to receive another battery update and “will continue to be built until 2024”.  Also planned is a purely electric BMW i1, which will compete against the VW ID.3. For the X1, BMW had confirmed a battery-electric iX1 in July. If the i1 assumed by Autocar would be based on the well-known 1-series, BMW would then have announced 1-series, 3-series, 5-series and 7-series BEV versions of its core lineup."

SK INNOVATION PUSHES FOR 3RD EV BATTERY PLANT IN HUNGARY

"SK Innovation Co., a South Korean refining-to-battery conglomerate, is pushing for its third battery plant in Hungary, people familiar with the issue said Monday." according to Korea Herald: "SK Innovation has begun a process of selecting subcontractors for the construction of the proposed plant, they said. SK Innovation denied that the selection process has begun, saying no decision has been made in regard to the third Hungarian plant.  Currently, SK Innovation runs a plant with an annual capacity of 7.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in the northwestern Hungarian city of Komarom.

SK Innovation has also been working to complete its second plant with a capacity of 9.8 GWh, next to the first plant, by 2022."

MG E-HS PLUG-IN HYBRID COMING NEXT YEAR

"The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is about to get some competition from China. The plug-in hybrid MG HS is still on track to touch down in Australia next year, with the promise of class-leading electric range" says CarExpedrt: "With a claimed electric range of 75km, the e-HS has the on-paper credentials to put the upcoming plug-in hybrid Ford Escape (50km) and Mitsubishi Outlander (50km) in the shade. How the all-new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV set for reveal next year will compare isn’t clear, but a longer electric range than the current 50km is likely."

ZAP-PAY: NEW APP PROMISES SEAMLESS PAYMENT FOR EV CHARGING

"Electric vehicle (EV) users will no longer have to shuffle between apps and cards to pay to charge on different networks, with the launch of a new service enabling them to do so from a single app." says Business Green "Zap-Pay launches today, with Engenie the first network available, followed by a wave of partners in the autumn including ESB EV Solutions, LiFe, and Hubsta. The new system was designed by Zap-Map, an app which drivers can currently use to locate chargers across the UK. Using Zap-Pay, EV drivers will be able to search, plan, and pay for their EV journeys all in one place, the firm said."
