Show #921

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ANDREW GREEN

CLARIFICATION #1

Last week I brought you the story about EV's beating diesel for the first time. I wasn't clear, and I should have been, that it was BEV/PHEV and HEV. So not just cars with plug sockets on.

"Data from Jato Dynamics shows one in four new cars registered last month was a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle, while the diesel market slumped to a record low. It’s the first time more than 300,000 hybrid and electric cars have been registered in a single month, and only the second time they have made up more than 20 percent of European registrations." says Motor1.com: "the Volkswagen Group, which includes Skoda, SEAT, Audi, and Volkswagen among other brands, is now Europe’s top-selling electric car manufacturer, while Mercedes-Benz was the plug-in hybrid market leader with a 22 percent market share. The best-selling single electric car, however, was the Tesla Model 3, with 15,702 examples registered."

CLARIFICATION 2

Also last week we talked about Panasonic developing the 4680 batteries with Tesla. And I wasn't sure at the time if that was to work on cells or battery assembly. And further reporting over the weekend show that Panasonic is indeed going to make the 4680 cells at GigaNevada with Tesla. Panasonic’s Chief Financial Officer Hirokazu Umeda: "also said the company has decided to launch an additional production line at the Nevada factory next year, increasing the plant’s total capacity by some 10% to 38-39 gigawatt hours (GWh) a year by around 2022. “We are targeting a profit margin of around 5% at our Tesla battery business within two to three years,” he added."

The balance of making 2170 cells vs 4680 cells wasn't discussed.

39GWh would be 780,000 batery packs a year at an average size of 50Kwh, and 520,000 packs a year at an average of 75kWh per pack. Either way, a lot of cars and storage. Tesla have a pathway to ~2 million cars by the end of 2022 Berlin and Austin at volume production so Nevada could supply a quarter to a third of the required batteries. The Berlin made Model Y will be the first volume production vehicle to use the 4680 cells, shipped from the pilot line at Kato Road in Fremont. The shift from 2170 to 4680 will be one to watch.

7 Oct

Berlin will use 4680 cell with structural battery pack & front & rear single piece castings. Also, a new paint system.  Lot of new technology will happen in Berlin, which means significant production risk. Fremont & Shanghai will transition in ~2 years when new tech is proven.

BIDEN AIMS TO IMPROVE US EV TAX CREDIT

"If elected president of the United States, Joseph R. Biden would do a few things for the electric vehicle industry. Biden plans to restore the full EV tax credit (permanently) for US-made EVs, remove the per-manufacturer cap, target it to middle-income consumers (
