Show #925

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Hello to DAVE MARTIN who has increased his Patreon support. And ROD DILKES is a new PRODUCER of the podcast.

TAYCAN HELPS PORSCHE RECOVER IN THE UNITED STATES

"Porsche's sales in the United States, its second-largest global market, took a significant hit earlier in 2020 as lock-downs swept across the nation. Its recovery has been quicker than expected, and company CEO Oliver Blume told Autoblog that strong demand for the electric Taycan has helped it turn the situation around." reports Autoblog: "Launched earlier in 2020, at the height of the pandemic, the Taycan (pictured) now stands proud as Porsche's third-best-selling model, behind the Macan and the Cayenne and ahead of the Panamera. Upcoming new variants, like the Cross Turismo station wagon expected to break cover in the coming months, will ensure demand for the model stays high."

GENESIS ‘GV60’ EV PROTOTYPE SPOTTED, TO USE RIMAC TECH

"Genesis has been spotted test driving an interesting prototype in Korea, with signs suggesting this could be the company’s first dedicated fully electric vehicle, dubbed the GV60. It’s set to slot into the company’s showroom as a crossover-style vehicle, somewhere in between the GV70 and GV80." according to Performance Drive: "We can probably think of it as a Genesis alternative to the Jaguar I-PACE, Audi e-tron, and Mercedes-Benz EQC. And the Tesla Model Y for that matter. Although, there’s also been suggestion of it being slightly smaller. Genesis is yet to confirm any details, however, it’s understood the vehicle will be underpinned by Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP architecture (Electric Global Modular Platform). According to a recent Korean Car Blog report, the GV60 is codenamed JW, featuring all-wheel drive and a modular battery system to provide different ranges and power outputs. Genesis is likely to adopt technology from Rimac for its upcoming EVs, as part of Hyundai Motor Group’s recent partnership. Earlier in 2019 the two companies entered an agreement, with Hyundai investing 64 million euros and Kia investing 16 million euros."

VW’S BOSS: WE DON’T WANT TO END UP LIKE NOKIA

"Volkswagen AG is at a critical juncture. It has weathered the pandemic relatively well but is fretting about cases going up again. It has electric cars rolling out but is well behind Tesla Inc. And it has massive manufacturing scale but desperately needs to rethink its vehicles as rolling software devices." reports Bloomberg: "It’s this last issue that Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess drives home with VW’s more than 635,000 employees. The transition in competencies from industrial might to software prowess will be an immense challenge for automakers that are vast, deliberate and some say ripe for disruption. Car companies that get it wrong risk ending up like Nokia Oyj—failed hardware makers doomed by more nimble and technologically adept upstarts." “Nokia is probably a good example of how such a change can happen—if you’re not fast enough, you’re not going to survive,” Diess, 62, told Bloomberg at VW headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany. “I’m always telling our people this example.”"

VOLKSWAGEN TRANSFORMS TROPICAL ISLAND INTO ELECTRIC CAR PARADISE

"As part of its strategy to become carbon neutral by 2050, Volkswagen is transforming the tropical Greek island of Astypalea into a "model island for climate-neutral mobility." Welcome to EV paradise. As part of the six-year project, new vehicle and ride-sharing services will be introduced to help reduce traffic and energy will be generated by green power sources such as solar and wind." reports CarBuzz: "The new transport system with digital mobility services will include an all-electric year-round ridesharing service that will replace the island's local bus service. Around 1,000 electric vehicles will replace roughly 1,500 combustion-powered cars as VW starts introducing new electric ID. models like the Volkswagen ID.3 compact and the Volkswagen ID.4 crossover to the market. Commercial vehicles, police cars, emergency vehicles, and public sector fleets will also be electrified. To cater for the increased number of EVs on the island, Volkswagen will install a comprehensive charging infrastructure with around 230 private and several public charging points."

HYUNDAI-KIA OFFICIALLY JOINTS IONITY HIGH POWER CHARGING

"The Hyundai Motor Group’s entry into the Ionity fast-charging network is now official. The Korean company through its Hyundai and Kia brands holds a 20 per cent stake in the Europe-wide high power charging network founded by BMW, Ford, Daimler and Volkswagen." says electrive: " It is now clear that the Korean company will also receive 20 per cent of Ionity’s shares as the fifth carmaker in the mix.. We are yet waiting to hear how the partnership may fit into the latest charging service that Hyundai-Kia had launched together with Digital Charging Solutions (DCS) under the labels Charge myHyundai and KiaCharge. Kia will introduce KiaCharge in seven countries this autumn, starting with Italy, Poland and Spain, followed by Austria, France, Germany and Switzerland. UK customers may expect the charging service to come active in the fourth quarter of 2020. Hyundai expects the service to launch in six countries, namely France, Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic this autumn."

TESLA TO INSTALL ANOTHER GIANT BATTERY IN AUSTRALIA

"French renewable energy company Neoen and Tesla will partner to install another one of the world’s largest lithium-ion batteries in Australia.  The contract with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) will allow Neoen to move to the next phase of its 300 MW/450 MWh Victorian Big Battery in Geelong, which will become one of the world’s largest batteries, at twice the size of the Hornsdale Power Reserve in South Australia." reports CleanTechnica: "The battery will use Tesla’s Megapack technology and AusNet Services will be the network partner, according to Neoen.  Independent analysis showed that for every $1 invested, the battery will deliver more than $2 in benefits to Victorian homes and businesses. Independent reviews show that Neoen’s Hornsdale Power Reserve delivered more than $150 million AUD in savings during its first two years of operation."
