Show #930

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

VW INCREASES TO $86 BILLION SPENDING ON EVS

"Volkswagen Group is boosting spending on technologies for electric and self driving cars, while increasing production of EVs in its German home market. Investments in battery-powered vehicles, autonomous driving and related future technologies will rise to about 73 billion euros ($86 billion), or half the company's 150-billion euro budget through 2025, VW said in a statement." says Automotive News Europe: "That's up from 60 billion euros a year ago, or 40 percent of investments planned at the time. The investment is part of VW Group's new five-year planning cycle, approved by the supervisory board on Friday. The investment envisages production of about 26 million full-electric cars in Europe, China and the U.S. by 2030.  Under the plan presented on Friday, VW is doubling its planned spending on digitalization to 27 billion euros, as it seeks to develop a seamless, software-based vehicle operating system. This includes spending on the group's Car.Software organization launched earlier this year. The goal is to build a proprietary software stack, which will be deployed in Audi’s Artemis project to develop an advanced, self-driving electric vehicle by 2024. The company's own share in software will increase to 60 percent from 10 percent, VW said."

DAIMLER WILL SHRINK WITH SHIFT TO ELECTRIC AND AUTONOMOUS CARS

"Daimler will be a smaller company five years from now, focused on capturing recurring revenues with software-based services as Mercedes-Benz seeks to redefine luxury in an era of electric self-driving cars, Chief Executive Ola Kaellenius said." according to Autoblog; "Jobs will disappear because it takes less time to build an electric car than a conventional gasoline or diesel version. That's because an electric car's battery and motor have only 200 components, compared with at least 1,400 parts found in a combustion engine and transmission, according to analysts at ING. The shift away from fossil fuel requires the carmaker to double down on efficiency so it can free up resources to build electric and self-driving cars, Kallenius said. Daimler also wants to offer customers new digital services so it can make money with new, recurring sources of revenue such as assisted driving functionalities and infotainment services when it unveils a new vehicle car operating system in 2024."

FIA OPENS TENDER FOR WRC HYBRID CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE

"For the Rally1 cars (which the current top WRC class will be called), the hybrid system developed between Compact Dynamics and Kreisel will come with a white label-supplied ‘plug-In’ charging infrastructure. The 3.9kWh battery in the car is supplied with an 8kW charging unit that will allow the battery to go from 20% of charge to 80% in approximately 20 minutes. A 15-minute ‘top-up’ is proposed for competitors at each service point, which the FIA notes will afford a brand an opportunity to display their offer." says Professional Motorsport World: "The power generation and charging facilities will also incorporate power supplies for teams’ garages, for lighting, heating, catering and welding operations. The FIA notes that tenderers have to plan for an average of 10-20 Rally1 cars on each event."

NISSAN QASHQAI TO RECEIVE E-POWER HYBRID DRIVE

"Nissan has provided a first preview of the third-generation Qashqai, which is scheduled for launch next year. The compact SUV will be the first Nissan model in Europe to be equipped with the e-Power hybrid drive but a plug-in hybrid is not planned for the time being." reports electrive: "The e-Power drive is a serial hybrid system, not a parallel hybrid as in the HEVs from Toyota. In the drive technology that Nissan is already using on its home market in Japan, the wheels are always driven purely electrically. The main energy source of the drive system is not the battery, but a gasoline engine that functions exclusively as a generator."

Ponz Pandikuthira, Vice President Product Planning at Nissan in Europe: "“In Japan, they typically don’t go above 50-65mph. Here in Europe, you do 80-85mph on a regular basis, At those speeds, you end up depleting the battery very quickly, so the range extender has to work really hard to keep the energy going and then it goes out of its range of efficiency”. It’s not yet clear how the Japanese company solved this problem."

And yet, no Qashqai PHEV.

UPCOMING ELECTRIC GENESIS EG80 TO GET WIRELESS CHARGING OPTION

"Hyundai Motor Group's Genesis is working on its first all-electric car "eG80", based on the group's new E-GMP platform, and according to the latest news, it will offer a wireless charging option." says InsideEVs: "Genesis would like to be a pioneer in wireless charging and to achieve that it will partner with WiTricity, which supplies the technology compliant with the new SAE J2954 standard. It will be an option and with a basic power level of about 6-8 kW, as the market for wireless charging is really in its infancy. Moreover, it requires a special installation (the ground assembly) at the customer's property. The unveiling of the Genesis EV is expected in the second quarter of 2021, while the market launch is set for late 2021."

BMW IS EXPORTING ITS CHINA-MADE IX3 ELECTRIC SUV TO 39 COUNTRIES

"BMW is now exporting its China-built iX3 electric SUV to countries around the world. The iX3 is being built by Brilliance BMW, the automaker's joint venture with Chinese vehicle manufacturer Brilliance Auto, which was launched in March 2003." says FutureCar: "The first China-made iX3s were shipped on Nov. 11 from the Port of Dalian to 39 countries and districts, mainly in Europe. It's the first time for the Brilliance BMW joint venture to export vehicles on such a large scale. Brilliance BMW will export a total of 1,600 vehicles this year and increase the amount to 12,000 for next year, according to Gasgoo. The new BMW iX3 is built with the fifth generation of BMW's eDrive technology, which includes a battery back with an energy density 30% higher than that of the previous generation, according to BMW. The iX3 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds."

UK EXPECTED TO BAN SALE OF NEW PETROL AND DIESEL CAR FROM 2030

"Boris Johnson is understood to be planning to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars within a decade, with reports that the ban will be brought forward by five years." reports The Guardian: "Johnson is expected to announce the measure amid a raft of new environmental policies next week, according to a report in the Financial Times, which attributes the news to industry and Whitehall sources. The government hopes the policy will energise the market for electric cars in the UK and help the country achieve its climate targets, including reducing emissions of greenhouse gases to net zero by 2050."

TESLA ANNOUNCED ITS FIRST EUROPEAN GIGAFACTORY 1 YEAR AGO TODAY

On Nov 12th I missed this anniversary from Teslarati: "One year ago today, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the automaker would open a production facility in Germany. Upon accepting an award at the Golden Steering Wheel awards alongside Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess, Musk shocked Tesla fans everywhere by revealing its intentions. But what has transpired for the electric automaker since then is a culmination of hard work, dedication, efficiency, and a little bit of luck, and Tesla has been able to erect several buildings of the facility just eleven months after the beginning of the construction process."

FORD MIGHT START MAKING ITS OWN BATTERIES TO CREATE MORE JOBS

"A few months ago, former Ford CEO Jim Hackett said there was no advantage to Ford building its own batteries for its electric vehicles. Now, the new CEO Jim Farley has reversed the company’s position, saying on Friday that making its own EVs would actually be a pretty solid way for Ford to create more jobs." writes Jalopnik: "Farley spoke at the Reuters Automotive Summit teleconference on Friday, where he commented on the growth of the EV market and the very viable concerns that come along with it. Creating an in-house battery will be difficult, and from Hackett’s point of view, wouldn’t really make sense for Ford if there are viable, well-made battery cells out there that require very little effort to install in a car. And from a business perspective, he wasn’t wrong. If you’re looking specifically at how you can cut down manpower in order to make a larger profit, outsourcing a battery cell isn’t a big deal."

VW TRADEMARKS JUNGLEZZ NAME, HINTS AT OFF-ROAD EV

"A wild trademark appeared recently on the European Intellectual Property Office. The brand is claiming the name ID. JUNGLEZZ for use on a vehicle. " says VWVortex blo9g "The name, back in August, was tied to a reimagined ID version of the Thing/Kübelwagen/Type 181.  Volkswagen has previously intimated that it would like to build an electric version of the thing. The brand wants to use its history to sell EVs but is still claiming that it won’t make an electric Beetle for fear of repetition."
