Show #947

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 10th December. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 SEEN AHEAD OF DEBUT

"Hyundai’s recently launched IONIQ sub-brand is about to unveil its first production model. It’ll take the form of an all-electric hatchback with a design inspired by the Concept 45. " says Motor1.com, meet the IONIQ5: "we expect the production Ioniq 5 to take after the Concept 45 with its square-shaped LED headlights and somewhat boxy overall appearance. he Ioniq 5 will ride on Hyundai’s dedicated EV platform called Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). Not much is known about the powertrain’s capabilities at this point but we know for a fact Hyundai’s new architecture will support the so-called vehicle-to-load (V2L) function where the EV can supply electric energy to outside sources. The company says the system should be able to supply up to 3.5 kW of power and provide enough energy for a midsize AC and a 55-inch TV to work for 24 hours."

VW ID.6 ON TARGET FOR 2023

"After the ID.3 and ID.4, one of the next additions to the ID range of electric cars is expected to be the ID.6 which will reportedly be available as both a sedan and a wagon. " says InsideEVs: " This model will apparently debut in the fourth quarter of 2023, and even though it will mostly be aimed at China where sedans are still a status symbol, there is a high likelihood that it will be sold elsewhere too. What’s especially cool about the ID.6 is that even though it will occupy roughly the same footprint on the road as a Passat, it will actually offer the interior room of a vehicle from a class above. This is a trick that VW is pulling off very well with the ID.3 and ID.4 already and we can only imagine how much space they will manage to offer in a larger vehicle. The ID.6 will be underpinned by the same MEB platform, come with a single-motor, rear-wheel drive base setup or more powerful dual-motor variants (including a possible performance-minded GTX variant) and it is said to have a range of as much as 700 km or 431 miles on a single charge (with its largest available battery pack)."

MERCEDES-BENZ VANS ANNOUNCES NEXT-GENERATION ESPRINTER

Mercedes-Benz Vans is accelerating down its road to full electrification and will make all of its model ranges available with a battery-electric drivetrain with a focus on reliability, quality and optimized total cost of ownership (TCO). To create even greater added value for customers in the future, Mercedes-Benz Vans developed the new Electric Versatility Platform for the large van segment. This innovative e-drive platform will be the technical basis for the next-generation eSprinter. The core elements of the new platform are three modules that enable the greatest possible flexibility in the development and design of different body types. This allows for new eSprinter body configurations previously only available with combustion engines.

Following the eVito and eSprinter, Mercedes-Benz Vans will ultimately cover the battery-electric range in all commercial transporter segments with the future eCitan.

EV VERSION OF MG3 COMING 2021

MG is going to launch a third EV for the UK, following the MG ZS EV and the MG5 Estate. The MG3 EV will be an all electric supermini at the bottom end of the range. It's due for launch in Q4 2021 and be based on the same size as the MG3 piston car. The MG ZS EV has a 44.5kWh battery which might be too big for this car so perhaps MG will ship with smaller. But if they can squeeze it in, it would have a larger battery than a MINI or Honda E. A range of 150 miles would be sufficient for that class of car. The key is price and if they can bring it in low enough to encourage more people to drive electric.

BRITISHVOLT CHOOSES SITE FOR GIGAFACTORY

Britishvolt has selected Blyth, Northumberland as the site of its first battery Gigafactory.

By the final phase of the project in 2027 it will be employing up to 3000 highly skilled people, producing over 300,000 lithium-ion batteries for the UK automotive industry. It will further provide up to 5000 jobs in the wider supply chain.

Britishvolt's Gigafactory is widely regarded as being strategically important for the UK automotive industry in order for it to maintain competitive advantage as we accelerate towards an increasingly electrified future.

Quarter four of 2023 has been targeted as the start of production in Britain's first gigaplant.

CHARLOTTE CHOSEN AS LOCATION FOR ARRIVAL HEADQUARTERS IN US

"Arrival, the UK based electric bus and truck startup, has chosen Charlotte, North Carolina as the site for its US headquarters. The company said in a press release this week it will add 150 employees and invest $3 million to establish its corporate outpost in America." says CleanTechnica: "Arrival has developed a standardized battery electric platform is says can accommodate a wide range of vehicles. It also plans to build its products in local minifactories located close to its customers. The first of its US minifactories will be located in Rock Hill, South Carolina, which is only about 30 miles south of Charlotte. Arrival has been selected by UPS to build 10,000 delivery vans in the UK and left the door open for an additional 10,000 in the future. The company has attracted investments from Hyundai and KIA, two companies who are also providing financial support to Canoo, a West Coast EV startup that has also developed its own highly scalable EV platform".

VOLVO CARS TO PRODUCE ELECTRIC MOTORS IN SWEDEN

Volvo Cars will assemble electric motors at its powertrain plant in Skövde, Sweden, and plans to establish complete in-house e-motor production by mid-decade. It will invest 700 million SEK (€68.2 million) to this end in coming years.

Volvo Cars announced earlier this year that it is investing significantly in the in-house design and development of e-motors for the next generation of Volvo cars. With the planned investments in Skövde, it now takes the first steps towards in-house e-motor assembly and manufacturing.

PEGATRON REVEALS LARGE INCREASE IN TESLA MODEL 3 PARTS ORDERS

"Another sign Tesla is planning for a big year in 2021 is a recent report that a parts supplier has seen a big increase in orders from the automaker." reportd Drive Tesla Candada: "Pegatron manufactures the central control system for the Model 3. According to sources who spoke with DIGITIMES, the electronics manufacturing company has an usually large increase in orders for those parts. While it is unclear when or where these parts will be used, there is a good chance many of them will go to Giga Shanghai. Tesla is targeting to produce 550,000 vehicles in 2021 at Giga Shanghai alone, with more than half of those being the Model 3."

ARTEMIS GOES INDEPENDENT

"Audi’s Artemis task force for highly automated electric cars has now been spun off into an independent company. Alexander Hitzinger, managing director of the new Artemis GmbH, made the announcement on LinkedIn." according to electrive: "Audi, under new CEO Markus Duesmann, had established the Artemis project at the end of May. The task force was to develop a “groundbreaking” model “quickly and without bureaucracy.” The highly efficient electric car is to hit the road as early as 2024."

BOLLINGER UPDATE THEIR DESIGNS

"The reveal of the production-spec Rivian R1T and R1S, as well as the unwrapping of the Tesla Cybertruck, might have pushed Michigan-based Bollinger's B1 and B2 electric SUV and pickup out of the limelight. Nevertheless, the company's still tinkering away at its boxy models, and Bollinger's latest images give us a better clue as to what the saleable B1 and B2 will ultimately look like." says MotorTrend: "The B1 and B2 benefit from a taller belt line, which helps lower the models' visual mass for a less top-heavy look. The updated design nets more passenger headroom and a bigger frunk. The entire greenhouse is taller, too, while the B2 now features a bed that's no longer integrated with the cab"
