Show #952

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 4th January. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

MERCEDES EQS SPIED WITH AERODYNAMIC WHEELS

"The luxury battery-powered sedan looks almost ready given the relatively low level of camouflage. However, we don’t expect to see the final production version of the EQS before the early months of 2021. the zero-emission S-Class equivalent should become the first electric model from Mercedes to arrive in the United States. It will be marketed as a direct competitor against the Tesla Model S and future electric BMW 7 Series and will be based on the brand’s large-car Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) platform. It should be at the US dealers towards the second half of next year." says Motor1: " Mercedes has also hinted the most efficient versions of the EQS will have a single-charge range of up to 435 miles (700 kilometers) measured by Europe’s  WLTP testing cycle. Interestingly, parts of the EQS will make an official debut later this week. Mercedes has teased its next-gen infotainment system before its premiere on January 7 during the 2021 digital version of the Consumer Electronics Show."

AUDI TO PRESENT FIRST ARTEMIS MODEL AT THE IAA

"According to a media report, the concept for the first Audi model of the Artemis electric showcase project will be presented at the IAA this fall. There is also further information on the start of series production planned for the end of 2024 and possible offshoots in the VW Group." says electrive: "According to insiders, the vehicle will be a “sporty, elegant mix of Avant and four-door coupe”. The vehicle, which was developed by the Artemis taskforce outside the usual Audi organisation, as Artemis has been an independent company since December 2020 and is also expected to have offshoots at the Group brands Porsche and Bentley. Audi, Porsche and Ionity are said to have agreed on a joint fast-charging network “that will promptly pamper discerning customers with additional services such as a charging guarantee and with convenience features such as wireless-conductive charging.”"

VOLKSWAGEN ENDS PRODUCTION OF E-GOLF TO MAKE WAY FOR ID.3

"The last e-Golf, which was finished in Urano Grey, rolled off the automaker's Transparent Factory in Dresden a few days ago. The last model brings the total units of the e-Golf produced to 145,561. That figure makes the e-Golf one of the more popular EVs in Europe, especially in Norway and Germany." says FutureCar: "This marks an important milestone for VW. The automaker started manufacturing the e-Golf in 2014 at its Wolfsburg facility and expanded production of the vehicle to Dresden in 2017. Since 2017, the Dresden facility manufactured a total of 50,401 units of the e-Golf. Volkswagen ended production of the e-Golf at the Wolfsburg facility earlier this summer. With production of the e-Golf officially ending, VW can now set its focus onto the ID.3 hatchback. The Dresden factory will be retooled early next year to manufacture vehicles that utilize its Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) platform. With the move, the all-electric ID.3 will now be manufactured at two locations."

VOLKSWAGEN HIRES UTILITY EXECUTIVE TO LEAD ELECTRIC CHARGING UNIT

"Volkswagen has hired Elke Temme, a long-time executive at Germany’s top utility RWE, to head the carmaker’s newly created division for energy and electric vehicle charging, it said on Monday." reports Reuters: "Temme’s move is the latest illustration of the growing convergence of the autos and energy sectors amid an expected boom in demand for electric vehicles. Most recently, Temme was chief operating officer of Innogy eMobility solutions. Innogy was carved out from RWE in 2016 and later broken up in an asset swap with E.ON, which acquired the firm’s emobility activities in the process. She will be in charge of pooling and managing existing group activities in the fields of energy, charging services, charging equipment and charging infrastructure across all brands, Volkswagen said."

FORD MUSTANG MACH-E TO JOIN MICHIGAN POLICE FORCE

"The Ann Arbor Police Department announced that it is adding two Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles to its fleet. According to reports in local news, the Ann Arbor City Council has already approved the spending of some ~$93,000 for the two 2021 Mach-E police ponies." reports InsideEVs: "The Mach-E's are expected to arrive later in 2021 to replace two gas-powered fleet vehicles that have reached the end of their usable life. Labor contracts state police vehicles must be replaced at six years or 80,000 miles."

Which reminds me of an electrek article last June: "A police chief who pushed to electrify his department’s patrol cars with Tesla Model 3 vehicles now says that the EVs might pay for themselves in less than two years. The Model 3 Standard Range Plus version that they bought is a little more expensive than the Dodge Charger at ~$41,000, but they expect gas savings of about $6,000 per year, which means that the Model 3 will pay for itself over its lifetime. They generally keep their vehicles for six years, and after they broke down the economics, they determined that they are going to save about $20,000 per car with the Model 3. It includes not only gas savings, but the police department is also expecting some significant maintenance savings."

XPENG IS THE LATEST EV COMPANY TO REPORT POSITIVE DELIVERY NEWS

"Chinese electric vehicle start-up XPeng reported strong fourth-quarter deliveries Sunday evening. The company delivered 5,700 vehicles in December 2020, up from 4,224 in November and up 326% compared with December 2019. For the entire fourth quarter XPeng delivered 12,964 vehicles." says Barron's. Whilst Fool.com said: "Since its launch in late June, the Xpeng P7 has become something of a hit product in the upscale-electric-vehicle niche that is catered to by rivals Tesla, NIO, and Li Auto in China. Xpeng delivered just over 15,000 P7s in 2020, and recently introduced a limited-edition "Wing" version to boost consumer interest. Xpeng is expected to report its fourth-quarter and full-year financial results to auto investors in mid-February. If the company's sales figures are any indication, the results should be good."

MASSACHUSETTS BANS SALE OF NEW GAS-POWERED CARS BY 2035

"Another state has followed California’s example in banning the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles. This time, it’s Massachusetts, and it’s aiming for a more electric-friendly state by 2035." says Jalopnik: "California and New Jersey have also proposed plans to achieve a similar goal, and it’s very likely we’ll see more states doing so in the near future. President-Elect Joe Biden has expressed his interest in electrification and environmentally-friendly transportation, which means states could see federal support for their initiatives."

NEW CLASS OF COBALT-FREE CATHODES

"Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers have developed a new family of cathodes with the potential to replace the costly cobalt-based cathodes typically found in today's lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles" according to Advanced Battery Research: "The new class called NFA, which stands for nickel-, iron- and aluminum-based cathode, is a derivative of lithium nickelate and can be used to make the positive electrode of a lithium-ion battery. These novel cathodes are designed to be fast charging, energy dense, cost effective, and longer lasting. Cobalt is a metal currently needed for the cathode which makes up the significant portion of a lithium-ion battery's cost. Not only does NFA perform as well as cobalt-based cathodes, but the process to manufacture the NFA cathodes can be integrated into existing global cathode manufacturing processes."

"The first buses are set to arrive in April 2021. BYD is already present in Piedmont’s capital and in other cities in the region. The vehicles will be 12-meter standard battery-electric buses equipped for overnight charging." reports Sustainable Bus: "The total value of the framework agreement is 72 million euros. 48 million for the buses, 11 million for the 10-years full service. Further 13 million euros are allocated for the replacement of batteries, at the cost of 130,000 euros for each unit. Battery lifespan should be no less than 400,000 km, corresponding to 8 years considering an average distance of 50,000 km/year."
