Show #956
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 8th January. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
TESLA MODEL Y STANDARD RANGE
"Surprise! The Tesla Model Y Standard Range is here. The electric SUV variant, which CEO Elon Musk originally said wouldn't make it to production, launched on Tesla's website late Thursday afternoon. In addition to the Standard Range model, Tesla also rolled out the SUV's seven-seat option for those in need of a third row." says CNET: "Crucially, the Model Y Standard Range drops the entry price for the electric SUV to $41,990 before other taxes and fees to become the least expensive Model Y on sale right now. It's still more expensive than the Model 3, however, which starts at $37,790."
"With an EPA-estimated 244 miles of range, the lowest driving range of any Tesla available, despite CEO Elon Musk tweeting in July that the model was dropped because of its sub-250-mile range." reports Car and Driver: "The Model Y is offered in two other versions: Long Range (EPA-estimated 326-mile range) and Performance (303-mile range), both dual-motor models with all-wheel drive. The newly introduced Standard Range model is rear-wheel drive.
$41,990
Single-motor rear-wheel-drive
5.3-second zero-to-60-mph
Top speed of 135 mph
Estimated delivery timing for the Model Y Standard Range is currently at 2-5 weeks.
Looking for some opinion/reaction, electrek said: "Tesla’s new 244-mile range Model Y was previously called “unacceptable” by Elon Musk, but we believe it’s far from the case and will sell like hotcakes. The launch was surprising considering CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla won’t produce the version of the Model Y because he said that the range would be “unacceptably low” at less than 250 miles. It reduced the starting price of the Model Y by $8,000. Of course, for that price difference, buyers not only lose 80 miles of range but also the dual motor powertrain. However, I am certain that many people are going to for that trade off, and that’s why Musk changed his mind. For most markets, 244 miles of range will be plenty and actually competitive with other vehicles in the segment. For example, the VW ID.4 has an EPA estimated range of 250 miles, and the base version of the Ford Mustang Mach E has 230 miles of range."
Resons to deny:
they need the sales from SR
They can't get enough batteries
Didn't want to tip competition
Didn't want to osborne themselves
Is it a response to ID.4 and Mach E

MODEL Y'S TINY THIRD ROW
"The Tesla Model Y third-row option doesn't jump out at you as you visit the automaker's website. However, if you've been keeping your eyes on it, you may know that the option is a few pages deep in the configurator. After choosing your crossover's color and wheels, you'll move forward to the page with what Tesla officially calls the "Seven Seat Interior." It's a $3,000 option. Adding the third row does not change the estimated delivery timeline." says InsideEVs. It's definitely not 7 adults, it's 7 people. It's akin to the Model S jump seats.
Third row seating for two
Easy entry into third row
Third row USB-C charging
Sliding second row with adjustable seatbacks
Fold-flat second and third rows for maximum cargo storage
Electronic fold-flat releases in trunk

DAIMLER’S MERCEDES-BENZ TRIPLES ITS ELECTRIC CAR SALES
"The CEO of Daimler emphasized the importance of low-emission technologies and innovation on Friday, telling CNBC that the automotive industry was “in the middle of a transformation.”" Källenius’ comments came on the same day Daimler announced its Mercedes-Benz Cars division had sold over 160,000 plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles in 2020, a tripling compared to the previous year. " says CNBC "Daimler is one of many big automotive firms looking to make big plays in the electric vehicle sector and challenge Elon Musk’s Tesla. The Volkswagen Group, for instance, is investing 35 billion euros (around $42.86 billion) in electric vehicles and says it wants to roll out roughly 70 all-electric models by 2030."

FUTURE RENAULT EVS WILL REVIVE CLASSIC MODELS, REPORT SAYS
"New Renault CEO Luca de Meo will revive some best-selling models from the brand’s past as electric cars under a turnaround plan aimed at improving sales and repositioning the struggling automaker, two sources familiar with the matter said." according to Automotive NEws EUrope: "De Meo, who has said he wanted to lean on the brand's French roots, will unveil an electric version of the now-phased-out Renault 4 small cars introduced in the early 1960s, the two sources said. There will also be a revived, electric version of another popular 1970s and 1980s model, based on the R5 or its successor the "Super Cinq,” the sources added. Among other Renault brands, the group will also present three new electric models for the Alpine sports car brand, the sources added. One of Renault's challenges will be to create distinct identities for each of the brands, which also include low-cost Dacia and Russia’s Lada."

VOLVO CARS TO TRIPLE ELECTRIC PRODUCTION CAPACITY
"Volvo Cars is tripling electric car manufacturing capacity at its plant in Ghent, Belgium, as it prepares to meet fast-growing demand for its Recharge line-up of chargeable cars. The capacity increase comes as Volvo Cars also reports its full-year sales results for 2020, which showed a strong growth in demand for the company’s Recharge models. The share of Recharge cars as a percentage of total sales more than doubled in 2020 compared with 2019." says EVObsession.com: "By 2022, electric car capacity at the Ghent plant will have more than tripled from today’s levels and amount to around 60 per cent of the plant’s total production capacity.
Ghent is currently preparing to take a second fully electric Volvo model, based on the CMA modular vehicle architecture, into production later this year. The plant already builds the XC40 Recharge, the company’s first fully electric car, as well as plug-in hybrid versions of the XC40."
PORSCHE TAYCAN BEATS ELECTRIC CROSS-COUNTRY CANNONBALL RECORD
"Our very own contributor Kyle Conner, along with friends Drew Peterson and Tijmen Schreur, headed out from New York City recently on a non-stop journey to Los Angeles, California in a 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S. The car is equipped with the largest battery, aerodynamic wheels, and, of course, massaging seats. Their goal: beating the Cannonball coast-to-coast record for an electric vehicle last set by Conner in a Tesla Model 3." repotrs MOtor1: "Rather than being a race between a Tesla and Porsche, this race really pits the Tesla Supercharger network against CCS fast chargers on other public networks. Conner is the current EV Cannonball Run record-holder. He set the record way back in August of 2019 in a Tesla Model 3. Conner traversed the States in just 45 hours and 16 minutes. Last week, Conner crossed the US in a Porsche Taycan 4S in just 44 hours and 25 minutes."

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
EV tech is on a rip, but is the constant improvement around an EV a possible reason NOT to buy one? Are people caught in decision paralysis and end up not buying one?
