Show #962

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 14th January. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 BREAKS COVER IN OFFICIAL SHOTS

When we saw the retro inspired and very beautiful Hyundai Concept 45 there was little chance it would enter production. I mean, shag pile carpets and sliding barn door? But the reality, what's now called the Ioniq 5, isn't far off. The interior might not be the living room concept which resembles a plush lounge, but at least the exterior styling has kept much of the standout features of the concept car.

"The new car, described by the brand as a “fundamental shift in BEV design approach”, will be fully revealed next month. It is the first production model to sit atop Hyundai and Kia’s new modular electric platform (E-GMP)." says Autocar: "New design elements include ‘Parametric Pixels’ (tiny pixel-style lighting elements that adorn the front of the car), a clamshell bonnet and 20in aero-optimised wheels. Technology found in the Ioniq 5 will include a Vehicle to Load (V2L) system offering a 3.5kW, 110/220v power supply via bidirectional charging - enough, Hyundai claims, to roast a turkey in a large oven. Ultra-fast charging promises to replenish up to 62 miles of range in as little as five minutes, too." Or 80% in 18minutes. The range is said to be just over 300 miles on WLTP. So although Hyundai won't talk battery sizes, say the efficiency was on average 4MpkWH (i could well be more), then 300 miles would need a 75kWh battery. And doing the math of the 80% charge in 18 minutes which they've told us, that would be able to get 60kWh of juice in that time. That would be 200kWh charging during that time. Which is incredibly fast, given the ramp down in speed you would expect after the battery is over half full, let alone 80%. But what about the claim of 62 miles (100km) in 5 mins? That would be a peak rate of 744 miles per hour. Or a peak rate of 248kW. it's an 800 volt architecture like the Taycan, which peaks at 270kW.

Next up, a low slung sports sedan called the 6, and an SUV scheduled for 2024.

E-GMP also accommodates a wide range of vehicle types, driving distances, and lifestyles through a standardized battery system equipped with technology optimized for EVs. E-GMP embraces unique EV design characteristics such as short overhangs and a long wheelbase collision safety, maximized passenger space, and battery safety. The space-consuming AC system has been moved from inside the car to the extra space created by replacing the engine with an electric motor leaving more room for passengers in the front.

The 3 pin plug sockets will be up front, and under the back seat in the middle. Opposite where the rear USB ports would be on many cars, the rear of the armrest area. So you can get to the power from outside and inside.

We anticipate the launch in February for a late 2021 on sale date.

CADILLAC CELESTIQ EV WILL OFFER 4-WHEEL STEERING

"When it comes to the Cadillac Celestiq flagship EV, four seems to be the magic number.  For the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Cadillac confirmed some details of the upcoming electric sedan, including all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, and a four-quadrant glass roof." says Green Car Reports "The roof is made from suspended-particle-device smart glass, allowing each of the four occupants (the Celestiq won't have a middle rear seat) to set the level of transparency for their quadrant, a Cadillac press release said. Cadillac also said the Celestiq will have a "pillar-to-pillar freeform display" for the driver and front passenger, with individual screens for both passengers. Additional screen between the seats in the first and second rows "will separate individualized comfort settings from entertainment displays," the automaker said, implying that these screens will be used for controlling different features. The Celestiq is one of numerous electric cars based on General Motors' Ultium modular battery architecture and BEV3 platform. It's expected to have a fastback shape, and will be hand-assembled in Detroit. The same basic platform will be used for the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV, which is expected to arrive before the Celestiq, in 2022"

The full width display is taking on the Mercedes-Benz MBUX Hyperscreen system. And the Ultium battery packs will be made up to 200kWh for some models so the range should be impressive.

KIA ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SPIED STILL WEARING THICK CAMOUFLAGE

Kia is working on it's own full electric car from the ground up, and it has been seen again in lots of camo. "Kia is keeping the car under super-tight warps – it continues to wear thick cladding and camouflage. It only recently lost the swirly wrap underneath, though the bare metal isn't much to look at. The coverings cover the front and rear fascias, the rear hatch, and the doors, leaving a lot to one's imagination. The hatch design is further distorted with extra cladding." says Motor1.com: "The new EV will ride on Hyundai's Electric-Global Modular Platform . Horsepower and performance specs remain elusive, though expect it to be geared toward efficiency and not outright oomph."

FOXCONN TEAMS UP WITH CHINESE AUTOMAKER GEELY

"Foxconn and Chinese carmaker Geely have created a joint venture aimed at selling manufacturing and services to the global auto industry. The deal which was announced on Wednesday, marks Foxconn's continued expansion into the auto sector and reflects Geely's desire to partner with technology companies. Foxconn and Geely will provide car production, consulting, intelligent driving systems and other services to global automotive enterprises, the two companies said." writes CNBC: "Taiwanese firm Foxconn is best known as the company that assembles Apple's iPhones. Last year, it launched a platform to help automobile companies make electric cars. And this month, Foxconn signed a deal with Chinese electric carmaker Byton to help produce its first vehicle."

HITACHI CAPITAL INVESTS ANOTHER £10M IN GRIDSERVE

"Hitachi Capital announced a £10m investment in Gridserve’s parent company, Gridserve Sustainable Energy Ltd. The firms say this is to strengthen their partnership following the successful launch of the UK’s first ultra-fast Electric Forecourt." accoring to electrive; "It is also not the first investment of Hitachi’s funding arm. The company has funded over £24m in Gridserve projects throughout 2020, including funding to help deliver the completion of the Braintree Electric Forecourt. The site is the first of over 100 large charging parks that Gridserve wants to install over the next five years. Robert Gordon, CEO of Hitachi Capital (UK) PLC, added they wanted “to become a market leader for EV adoption”. Hitachi Capital now holds 19.63% of shares in Gridserve’s parent company".

Big Red is teasing its reveal on yet another microsite in advance of the virtual Tokyo Auto Salon 2021." says Jalopnik: "a performance version of the Model E is what enthusiasts have been clamoring for.
