Show #964
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 16th January. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
EARLY FORD MUSTANG MACH-ES GET DELAYED
"The first Ford Mustang Mach-E buyers may have to wait a bit longer than expected to get their hands on the new electric crossover. Ford confirmed a tip sent to Autoblog Friday that some early deliveries have been delayed to address quality concerns. " writes Autoblog. A quote from Ford: ""As part of our commitment to delivering high-quality vehicles, we are conducting additional quality checks on several hundred Mustang Mach-E models built before dealer shipments started last month," Ford spokesperson Emma Berg said. "As part of our quality process, we want to ensure they meet the quality our customers expect and deserve. We notified affected customers that they may receive their Mustang Mach-Es on different timing than previously discussed. The team is working to expedite these vehicles, and we hope that customers receive them ahead of targeted dates, providing there are no COVID-19-related transportation delays."

AUDI TESTS GRID-OPTIMISED CHARGING WITH E-TRON MODELS
"Together with the company GISA and other partners, Audi has tested grid-serving charging in the German city of Chemnitz. Specifically, the participants created an overload scenario in the local power grid and tested the use of a smartmeter gateway." says electrive: "The research project with Audi e-tron cars dealt with the following scenario. In a street supplied by a local grid transformer, several electric cars are charging simultaneously at high power. To avoid overloading the grid, intelligent management of charging processes is required in this situation."

RIGHT HAND DRIVE MODEL 3'S WILL COME FROM CHINA
Tesla has updated the Design Studio in the UK so show the new Model 3 interior, with the wrap around dash trim, as first seen in the China Model 3.
As of recording, this change has not been applied to the US design studio. And has not been applied to Left Hand Drive European markets. So whilst they could be mid-update to the website, I'm sticking my neck out and saying China will now make the RHD models. And of course that means if you go for SR+ you'd also get the LFP battery pack. Estimated delivery date says February for that and the LR, Performance is May.
TESLA MODEL 3 RIGHT HAND DRIVE FLEET SPOTTED IN GIGA SHANGHAI
"A new fleet of Right Hand Drive (RHD) Tesla Model 3 was recently spotted in the holding lot of Gigafactory Shanghai. The vehicles, which are covered with protective wrap, seem ready to be exported to foreign markets. " according to Teslarati: "Gigafactory Shanghai has an ambitious goal this year, with previous reports stating that the China-based plant is aiming to produce about 300,000 Model 3 in 2021, about 100,000 of which will be exported to other countries. Together with the Made-in-China Model Y, Gigafactory Shanghai is expected to produce about 550,000 vehicles this year. The Model 3 fleet’s RHD configuration and wrapped nature infer that the vehicles will likely be exported soon. Gigafactory Shanghai, after all, started exporting vehicles to Europe last year, as part of the electric car maker’s efforts to optimize its operations. The first batch of 7,000 Model 3s was sent from Gigafactory Shanghai last October, to much celebration from the electric car maker’s local division."

TESLA GIGA SHANGHAI MADE MODEL 3 BEGINS SHIPPING TO AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND & JAPAN
"Tesla is actively ramping up production as it prepares to ship the China-made RHD Model 3s to Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. The design studio for ordering MIC Model 3 is open, and shows delivery times from two to 12 weeks, depending on the country." says Tesmanian: "Today it was noticed on the Tesla website, for Australia, New Zealand and Japan, the order configurator for Model 3 has changed. Instead of the previously offered interiors, another one has now appeared. The new interior is in line with what is now available only on the new, made in China Model 3. The Fremont-made Model 3 has a different design."

TESLA CLAIMS MODEL Y BOASTS LOWEST SUV ROLLOVER RISK
"Tesla claims the Model Y is the safest SUV ever tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for rollover risk. NHTSA’s assessment “determined that Model Y has a rollover risk of 7.9%, the lowest of any SUV recorded to date by the organization,” according to a statement released by Tesla on Wednesday. This information does not appear to be immediately available in NHTSA’s online records, however, and it’s unclear whether Tesla was supposed to disclose such detailed information." says Jalopnik: "Back in 2018, Elon Musk preemptively announced the Tesla Model 3 had the lowest probability of injury, citing then-upcoming results of NHTSA testing. Musk was reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter by the organization."

TESLA IS LIQUIDATING MODEL S AND MODEL X INVENTORY
"Tesla has informed employees to liquidate Model S and Model X inventory by the end of the month as a significant refresh now seems likely." reports electrek: "Electrek has learned from sources familiar with the matter that Tesla has instructed employees to sell all Model S and Model X inventory in stores across all markets. Tesla aims to have absolutely no Model S or Model X in inventory by the end of the month. It should be achievable since Tesla hasn’t produced new Model S and Model X vehicles in almost a month due to a production shutdown of the lines for its flagship electric sedan and SUV. The move is unusual at the beginning of a new quarter and it intensifies rumors of a design refresh."

TESLA'S ANSWER TO LIDAR?
"According to an application with the FCC, Tesla has filed to use a new type of “millimeter-wave radar sensor.”If you follow Tesla and Elon Musk, you're likely aware that the company has no plans to implement Lidar, which is one of the most popular technologies among other companies pursuing self-driving cars. Musk continues to insist that computer vision, supported by cameras and radar is the way to go." says InsideEVs: "According to an application with the FCC, Tesla has filed to use a new type of “millimeter-wave radar sensor.” Currently, all of Tesla's vehicles have a forward-facing radar hidden at the front of the car. It is one of many hardware components involved in Tesla's Autopilot suite, and the same hardware is what "drives" the company's Full Self-Driving Beta technology."
