Show #968
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 20th January. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

"Mercedes-Benz has revealed its second electric model, the EQA 250, edging out the soon-to-be-revealed EQS sedan. The EQA is a little crossover sibling to the EQC, and it's closely related to the gas-powered GLA-Class. That relationship is clear in the styling, although the EQA gets a number of unique design changes. It also packs a powertrain that's right on par with the GLA, and arguably more impressive. Interestingly, though, is that Mercedes hasn't decided whether it will be offered in the U.S" reports Autoblog.
The UK website Driving Electric had a chance to drive it: "Expected to be priced from just over £40,000 in the UK, the EQA is clearly a premium offering with its sights set on the upcoming Tesla Model Y, rather than trying to be an enticingly affordable family SUV in the mould of the Volkswagen ID.4 or Skoda Enyaq iV. Nonetheless, it's expected to appeal to a wider audience than the steeply priced EQC. First of all, it's swift. Compact dimensions, good visibility and characteristically eager and smooth electric power delivery make it a great tool for tackling busy city traffic, while it's not bad at all on a twisty country road, either. It starts to feel a little out of its depth during sustained high-speed motorway cruising, with top speed capped at 99mph. There are no less than five 'levels' of regenerative power to toggle between, the strongest of which allows for 'one-pedal driving' pretty much everywhere, while the lightest feels more suited to maintaining momentum on a lightly trafficked road."
RENAULT SAYS NEW 5 EV WON’T REPLACE ANY EXISTING MODEL
Based on what was said in this article by Autocar, both the Clio and the Zoe will coexist with the new electric 5, even if there will be some overlapping among these models." says InsdieEVs: "This is backed up by previous statements made by the Renault Group vice president, Laurens van den Acker, who confirmed the Zoe would continue to be sold. The reasoning behind it is simple, really: it is Europe’s single best selling electric car, and it is wiser to keep the nameplate going than to replace it with something completely new. The Renault 5-inspired EV is expected to debut in 2023, alongside a rumored (but not yet confirmed) reinterpreted 4L model. We really wonder if Renault will also keep the Twingo in its range, or if it will be replaced by one of the two aforementioned new models."
NEW ENTRY LEVEL PORSCHE TAYCAN MODEL
"Porsche has revealed a new entry-level variant of its Taycan electric car. The new model joins the range with two battery size options and, for the first time in a Taycan, two-wheel drive. Overall Taycan sales were second only to the Macan in Porsche’s line-up during 2020, and that’s without this new, even more accessible model." says the performance car website evo: "The new variant, simply called the ‘Taycan’, will open the range priced nearly £13,000 less than the current Taycan 4S at £70,690. It features either a 79.2kWh or an optional 93.4kWh battery pack, that powers a single electric motor on the rear axle. The permanently excited synchronous motor (Porsche’s words, not ours) is identical to that found in the 4S, and produces either 312bhp or 374bhp, depending on if the smaller or larger battery capacity has been chosen, with respective overboost figures of 402bhp and 469bhp. Despite the variation of peak power figures, performance of both capacity options are identical at 5.4sec for the 0-62mph sprint, topping out at 142mph. While this makes the entry-level Taycan the slowest model in the range, it’s also the first Taycan to be given a 300-mile WLTP-certified electric range with the larger battery fitted, the lesser model will still reach 269 miles on paper."
VW GOES HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH TESLA IN CHINA WITH NEW ELECTRIC SUV
"Volkswagen AG has set the starting price of its first locally built all-electric SUV with its Chinese partner FAW Group Co. at 199,900 yuan ($30,800) after subsidies, marking a play for the mass market as a growing number of automakers jostle for share in China." according to Bloomberg: "The ID.4 Crozz is built on VW’s MEB electric vehicle manufacturing platform, which is also used in some models of Audi and Skoda. The car is cheaper than Tesla Inc.’s recently launched Model Y crossover, which starts at 339,900 yuan and isn’t eligible for subsidies. The vehicle can run as far as 400 kilometers (249 miles) on a single charge. VW is also selling a version with a range of 550 kilometers, starting at 219,900 yuan."
The cheapest Model 3 SR+ is the equivalent of $38,571, for 290 miles. The most expensive ID.4 Cross is $37,489.
ID.4 X is made by SAIC-VW and ID.4 Crozz made by FAW-VW. Both cars have capacity of 300,000 cars every year. And the one we're talking about today is the FAW-VW model.
TESLA LOWERS PRICES OF THE MODEL 3 IN GERMANY AND FRANCE

TESLA IS HIRING PEOPLE TO HANDLE COMPLAINTS PEOPLE TWEET AT ELON MUSK
"Elon Musk wears many hats, but it seems that Twitter customer support may no longer be one of them. The company is hiring remote support staff to, along with other duties, handle complaints people tweet at him." says Engadget: "Among the job responsibilities of Tesla Energy Support Specialists are to resolve or redirect grievances as needed and to "address social media escalations directed at the CEO with critical thinking." The company ditched its PR department last year, and the support specialists are now "the front line and face of the Tesla brand," according to a job listing."
