Show #969
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 21st January. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
VW FINED FOR MISSING EMISSIONS TARGETS
Subtitle: Should have made more EVs.
"Volkswagen, the world’s largest carmaker, will pay more than €100m in fines after narrowly missing strict EU emissions targets in 2020, despite launching its flagship electric vehicle during the year." writes Joe Miller and Peter CAmpbell for The FT: "The group, which includes the Audi, Porsche and Seat brands, said its fleet-wide emissions in Europe stood at 99.8 grammes of CO2 per kilometre driven, roughly half a gramme short of the goal set by Brussels. VW ended up buying carbon credits from Chinese carmakers, including MG, Aiways and the Geely-owned electric black taxi maker LEVC, to offset the problem. The fines for missing the targets are €95 for every gramme of CO2 over the limit, multiplied by the number of cars sold across the bloc. VW sold more than 3.6m cars in Europe as a whole last year, although that figure includes non-EU states. FT calculations indicate VW, therefore, faces a fine of approximately €150m."
They still sold 315,400 BEV's in 2020 (2019: 72,600). 9.7% of all new deliveries. 25% of teh EV market.

From VW:
Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Audi overfulfill fleet targets
Proportion of electric vehicles in EU increased more than fivefold in the same period; Group is clear BEV market leader in Western Europe
The Volkswagen Group will systematically step up its e-offensive in 2021 with a large number of new all-electric vehicles based on the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB). Audi will start this year with the Q4 e-tron and Q4 e-tron Sportback2, CUPRA will launch the el-Born and ŠKODA will bring the Enyaq iV to its customers. Volkswagen Passenger Cars will launch the ID.4 in in a number of additional markets and present a new all-electric model.
CEO Herbert Diess: “Along with Volkswagen and Audi, CUPRA and ŠKODA are now also bringing out attractive electric models, which will allow us to meet the fleet targets this year.”
VW CEO TEASES TRINITY PROJECT TO RIVAL TESLA
"Trinity will be the next EV development program after Neo, VW's internal codename for the program that led to the ID family of electric cars, Diess tweeted, adding that it will "revolutionize Volkswagen". In a LinkedIn post, Ralf Brandstätter, CEO for VW passenger cars, elaborated a bit. He said Trinity will comprise a new platform, more sophisticated driver-assist tech (reaching Level 4 on the SAE autonomous-driving scale), and a "radically new production approach" implemented at the revamped Wolfsburg factory." says Green Car Reports: "Trinity may be related to Project Artemis, VW-owned Audi's attempt to launch a high-efficiency flagship EV by 2024, while creating a template for a faster development process. Audi could potentially take the lead in developing a vehicle platform that will be available to all VW Group brands."
TOYOTA LAUNCHES RAV4 PLUG-IN HYBRID IN THE UK
RAV4 Plug-in operates as an authentic electric vehicle: EV running is its default mode, in which it can cover up to 61 miles in urban driving (WLTP city cycle) on a full battery charge, and 46 miles in mixed (WLTP combined cycle) driving, comfortably more than the average European daily commute, and reach speeds of 84mph (where permitted), with no intervention from the hybrid powertrain.
The driver can select from four different drive modes to suit the journey or personal preference, including an Auto EV/HV mode which automatically switches the vehicle to HV operation when extra drive power is needed, bringing the 2.5-litre hybrid engine into play, then returning to EV operation when conditions allow.
On-the-road prices are £47,395 for the Dynamic and £50,895 for the Dynamic Premium. For company car tax payers, the benefit-in-kind rating for the RAV4 Plug-in Dynamic is from six per cent.
BMW ANNOUNCES ELECTRIC M CAR IS COMING THIS YEAR
"An electric BMW M car is coming this year. That’s official news coming from the mouth of Markus Flasch, chairman of the board of BMW M. There’s no official date for a reveal yet, so BMW has 11 months and some change to work with. The latest reports suggest that the car will be an M Performance version of the upcoming i4. " according to Autoblog "Power is rumored to come from a pair of electric motors that produce over 500 combined horsepower"

27% PLUGIN VEHICLE SHARE IN GERMANY
"The German automotive market has opened the floodgates to plugin electric vehicles, with December setting yet another record sales month. Nearly 83,000 plugin vehicles (PEVs) were registered in December, resulting in an amazing 27% market share. Full electric vehicles (BEVs) alone accounted for 14% market share in December, making Germany the largest PEV market outside China" says CleanTechnica: "he end of 2020 became a stampede into electrified vehicles, getting to a point where, despite tanking fossil fuel sales, electrified sales allowed the overall market to actually grow 10% YoY in December."
BEVs For December 2020:
ID.3
Zoe
Model 3

NISSAN’S E-NV200 WINTER CAMPER
"Nissan has revealed a rather unexpected EV: a concept e-NV200 van called the Winter Camper. Even before you know the details, the styling is head-turningly brilliant. Those chunky tyres and mountain decals make the Winter Camper look like the sort of machine The A-Team would drive on an Alpine adventure." reports CAR mag: "The idea behind the e-NV200 Winter Camper is to showcase how a camper with both an EV platform and some genuine off-road ability would look. Nissan says the Winter Camper has been armed with bespoke upgrades such as a raised ride height and knobbly off-road tyres to tackle challenging terrain. Whether or not the Winter Camper actually makes it into production, it shows that Nissan is still prepared to stick its neck out and suggest that vehicles can be individual and fun"
The e-NV200 Winter Camper is powered by the same 40kWh electric battery as the e-NV200 Combi. Range between 124 and 187 miles.

OPEL/VAUXHALL PRESENTS COMBO-E CARGO VAN
"Opel-Vauxhall has presented the new Combo-e Cargo. From size and capability, the all-electric high-roof van fits in between the Vivaro-e electric van and the big Movano-e that the brand will unveil later this year." says electrive: "Vauxhall notes that the new Combo-e is ideal for both business and private users looking for a zero-emissions van in the UK. The Combo-e Cargo is equipped with the familiar 100 kW electric drive and a 50 kWh battery, which enables a WLTP range of up to 275 kilometres. Vauxhall cites a range of up to 171 miles (WLTP). The small commercial vehicle also matches the familiar e-CMP models when it comes to charging: At a DC charging station with 100 kW or more, the battery is 80 per cent charged in 30 minutes"

TESLA Q4 CA REGISTRATIONS SPIKE 63%
" More than 22,000 Tesla vehicles were registered in California in Q4 2020, an increase of about 63% over the same period in 2019." according to Tesmanian: "Model Y is becoming more popular than its older sibling, Model 3, and more than half of all sales in the state are from the electric compact SUV. Sales data show that Tesla sold about 3,656 Model S/X, 7,044 Model 3, and 11,417 Model Y"
NOTTINGHAM TO COMBINE V2G, SOLAR AND BATTERY STORAGE
"An intelligent energy management system is being developed in Nottingham to optimise clean technology including a fleet of electric vehicles (EVs), battery storage and solar." says Current NEws: "The chargers themselves are to have vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality, allowing for short-term energy storage and grid balancing. Whilst there has been no final decision on a supplier for these chargers – or for the battery storage element of the project, which is set to have a capacity of 500kWh – Nottingham already owns a range of vehicles capable of smart charging which will be integrated into the system first."
