Show #974
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 26th January. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
DEATH OF DIESEL LOOMS AS CARMAKERS ACCELERATE TO ELECTRIC FUTURE
"The world’s biggest diesel engine factory in Tremery, eastern France, is undergoing a radical overhaul - it’s switching to make electric motors." says Reuters: "From less than 10% of output in 2020, electric motor production at Tremery will double to around 180,000 in 2021, and is planned to reach 900,000 a year - or more than half the plant’s peak pre-pandemic output - by 2025. The shift is testament to a car industry in flux. Demand for diesel cars has slumped since a 2015 pollution scandal, while tough new EU regulations, which fine carmakers for exceeding emissions limits, are pushing them to make more electric models. So, in the midst of a pandemic and with the level of consumer demand for battery-driven cars still uncertain, automakers from Volkswagen to Nissan are ditching diesel models and ramping up output of electric drives."
Meanwhile: "At Renault’s Cleon plant near the northern French coast, the switch from diesel is well under way, with only half a building housing the assembly lines for diesel motors while hybrid and electric motors are spread over two whole buildings."

KIA'S NEW ELECTRIC CROSSOVER COULD BECOME BRAND'S TOP-SELLING EV IN EUROPE
"Kia's first vehicle built on parent Hyundai Motor's new E-GMP modular electric platform is likely to quickly become the brand's best-selling full-electric car in Europe. The EV will be a crossover with design cues from the Imagine concept unveiled at the 2019 Geneva auto show." says Automotive News Europe: "Kia expects to sell 10,000 to 15,000 units of the model in Europe this year, following its launch in September, Kia Europe Chief Operating Officer Emilio Herrera told Automotive News Europe. Herrera did not disclose forecasts for the crossover's expected sales in 2022, but it could outsell the two full-electric vehicles in Kia's European lineup, the Soul and Niro small crossovers. The Soul is offered only as a full EV in Europe and its sales were 8,021 last year, according to data from JATO Dynamics. The full-electric e-Niro accounted for about 31,000 of the model line's 77,638 sales last year."
VW ID.4 GTX AND ID.5 ELECTRIC SUVS QUIETLY CONFIRMED FOR 2021 LAUNCH
"VW let slip some tantalizing confirmations about future models. The company now confirms that the performance-focused ID.4 GTX and ID.5 coupe-inspired variant are debuting in 2021. It's part of a goal to introduce 20 EVs by 2025." says Chris Bruce at Motor1: "The ID.4 GTX will have a more potent powertrain that will reportedly be capable of pushing the crossover to 62 miles per hour in 6.2 seconds. However, this performance will come with a range lower than the standard model's 250 miles. The debut will likely be in the spring before going on sale in Europe a few months later. The availability of this variant in the US is still a mystery. While the standard ID.4 is far from boxy, if you prefer a sleeker appearance, then the ID.5 is the version to wait for."

BIDEN PLANS TO REPLACE GOVERNMENT’S VEHICLE FLEET WITH ELECTRIC CARS
"Joe Biden signed an executive order on Monday to “Buy American”, which he says will include replacing hundreds of thousands of vehicles in the federal government fleet with US-made electric vehicles." according to The Independent: "It will come as welcome news for American EV manufacturers including Tesla, Rivian, and Lordstown, along with traditional car makers like Ford and GM, which are plowing billions into the EV space. There are some 650,000 vehicles in the fed’s fleet, according to a 2019 General Services Administration report. It breaks down into 245,000 civilian vehicles, 173,000 military vehicles, and 225,000 in the postal service."
EU APPROVES FUNDING FOR EV BATTERY INDUSTRY
"The European Union has approved 2.9 billion euros in subsidies from 12 member countries for a second pan-European project to develop the electric battery industry and move away from its reliance on Asian imports. The EU's executive commission had already cleared a 3.2 billion-euro plan subsidized by seven countries in Dec. 2019 to support research and innovation in a key sector where Europe is lagging behind Asian competitors." according to IEN: "Called the “European Battery Innovation," the project will allow non-European businesses such as Tesla to benefit from EU investment. Tesla, which is headquartered in California, is building its first European factory in the Berlin area. Tesla expects to make 150,000 electric cars a year at the new plant starting in mid-2021, with plans to increase that number to half a million annually. The commission said the project — involving Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden — will cover the whole production chain, from mineral extraction to design, battery manufacturing and recycling."

TESLA MODEL S AND KIA NIRO EV TOP ELECTRIC VEHICLE OWNERSHIP STUDY
"The inaugural J.D. Power Electric Vehicle Experience Ownership Study ranked EV models based on ownership satisfaction, and looked at general customer attitudes toward electric cars. The Tesla Model S ranked highest overall, and highest in the premium EV segment, with a score of 798 points out of a possible 1,000 points. The Tesla Model 3 took second place, with 790 points, while the average score for the premium segment was 782 points." says Green Car Reports: "Range was the biggest factor. Most owners drive less than the listed range of their EVs, but still want to know that real-world range is close to what is advertised. While build quality is often viewed as a Tesla weak point, that didn't seem to deter owners."
FORMULA 1 RACER JENSON BUTTON FORMS EXTREME E TEAM
"Extreme E has announced the participation of the third Formula 1 world champion. After Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button is also joining the electric off-road racing series starting this year." says electrive; "Different from Hamilton and Rosberg, Button will join as a driver as well. The first round of the Extreme E is scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia in April 2021. The electric races are planned to occur in five remote locations – Arctic, desert, rainforest, glacier and coastal – to raise awareness of the environmental issues there. In Extreme E, standard electric cars will be used."

OVO TO LAUNCH 'HALF-PRICE' ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING TARIFF
"Ovo Energy plans to launch an electric vehicle charging tariff, at half the usual price, to compete with typical off-peak rates even when electricity demand is at its highest. The UK’s second-largest energy supplier will set the tariff at a flat rate of 6p per kilowatt-hour no matter what time of day their customers choose to charge their vehicle, in direct competition with suppliers which offer cut-price charging during set hours overnight." writes The Guardian: "Instead Ovo’s “type of use” tariff will be less than half the typical rate from rival suppliers – without limiting the times when customers can charge – by automatically charging vehicles when prices are low. When prices are high, energy could be drawn back into the grid from the batteries of electric vehicles sitting idle."
"Our innovative smart energy plan makes owning an EV even more attractive. It’s the UK’s only plan that separates the cost of charging an EV from your household electricity bill. OVO Members pay a guaranteed flat rate of 6p per kWh at any time of day for charging their car with their OVO smart charger."
