Show #984
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 6th February. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
BMW I7 ELECTRIC SEDAN COMING WITH AROUND 650 HORSEPOWER
"Spy photos have shown the BMW i7 electric sedan undergoing extensive testing. The camouflage and cladding have hidden a model that’s expected to resemble its gas-powered sibling, though surprises aren’t expected. However, one area BMW could excite is with the i7’s output. The company has yet to make anything official – and likely won’t until the reveal – though a new Autobild report says the sedan could offer 650 horsepower (484 kilowatts)." according to Motor1: "The report also notes that the German automaker will offer a 120-kilowatt-hour battery that’ll give the sedan a range of 700 kilometers (434 miles). Also in the report is the mention of a less-powerful variant with a smaller 80 kWh battery. The automaker isn’t expected to reveal the new vehicle until sometime next year, as it’ll arrive for the 2023 model year. It’ll compete against the Mercedes EQS, which rumors suggest could receive a high-performance AMG version, too, which would help justify a 650-hp i7 in BMW’s stable. The BMW is also likely to receive a bevy of safety features and semi-self-driving technologies."

FORD MUSTANG MACH-E U.S. SALES AND PRODUCTION NUMBERS UP IN JANUARY
"Ford announced its U.S. production and sales results for the month of January, and as we can see, the ramp-up of the Mustang Mach-E progresses. The company delivered to customers 238 Mach-E, which combined with the first three in December, gives us a total of 241. We can guess that February, or at least March, will be in four digits." according to InsideEVs: "On the production front, the volume is an order of magnitude higher. In January alone, Ford produced 4,250 Mach-E. The cumulative production is at 10,967, but we must take into account that part of it is envisioned for other markets. An important piece of information is also that the number of cars delivered to dealers increased to roughly 5,000."

RIVIAN'S AMAZON DELIVERY VANS HAVE STARTED MAKING DELIVERIES
"Rivian has begun production of its R1S SUV, but the first vehicles to actually make it to the road and be used for their intended purpose are the delivery vans that the EV startup has built for global retail giant Amazon. Amazon has officially begun delivering your orders with these electric vans, ushering in a new age of electric mobility and changing the way that commercial vehicles impact the environment." reports CArBuzz: "These vans will be a common sight on our roads soon, since Amazon has ordered 100,000 of them. Series production of the vehicle will only start sometime next year, and we don't know exactly how many of the 100,000 units Amazon is already making use of, but at this point, it's probably just a handful. For now, the electrified deliveries have started in Los Angeles, but over the course of the year, an additional 15 cities will see the introduction of the new vehicles."

TESLA’S SUPERCHARGER PRODUCTION FACILITY IN SHANGHAI GOES ONLINE
"Tesla’s Shanghai Supercharger production plant has gone online, the company announced today. Tesla announced that it would begin producing Superchargers in Shanghai at a dedicated plant on November 5th, 2020, with the intention of widening the availability of its charging infrastructure in the country." says Teslarati: "In just over two months since the announcement, the plant is online and producing Tesla-specific charging stalls. Tesla did state that the project was officially erected in August 2020, making it just over five months that the project was completed from start to finish."
TEsla said:" Today, with the strong support of Shanghai governments at all levels and Tesla’s rapid advancement, the Tesla Shanghai Supercharging Pile Factory was officially completed and put into production, representing the industry’s leading third-generation Supercharging pile (V3) was officially off the assembly line”

TESLA UPDATES MODEL Y TIMELINE IN EUROPE
"Tesla has updated its Model Y delivery timeline in Europe – hinting that Gigafactory Berlin will start production in “mid-2021.” says electrek: "That’s updated from just “2021,” and it would indicate a start of production in just a few months at Gigafactory Berlin."
"In October last year CEO Elon Musk revealed the Model Y produced at Giga Berlin will be the first to have the integrated battery packs featuring the new 4680 cells. The integrated battery pack would also mean the introduction of single-piece front and rear castings for the electric SUV." ntes Drive TEsla Canada: "That is a lot of new technology to introduce and ramp up in such a short amount of time. Since the targeted date is only about five months away, Tesla could also be planning to import Model Y’s produced at Giga Shanghai. It wouldn’t be the first time it has done something like that as the automaker began exporting Model 3’s to Europe last year."
GENESIS GV70E ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SPIED TESTING FOR THE FIRST TIME
"It’s only been a couple of days since a report broke previewing a legion of Genesis EVs to come, but one of our spy shooters has already captured one of those vehicles: the GV70e. Basically, this vehicle is an all-electric version of the GV70 crossover that’s already been revealed." says Autoblog: "A number of visual elements give this tester away as the electric GV70. For starters, there’s the solid grille. The heavy camouflage blocks off a grille that is shaped similarly to the normal GV70, but it’s just a big shield in this case. You can see that a tiny slit was cut in the center for what looks like a camera. This EV seems a good fit for the recently-announced E-GMP electric vehicle platform that will underpin a number of electric Hyundai products. The even-smaller electric Genesis crossover we spied the other day (and many others) will also take advantage of the platform. It’s still unclear when the GV70e will debut, but Hyundai has promised to launch 23 electric vehicles by 2025."

LEGISLATION WORKS
"With 2020 seeing emission regulations tighten, manufacturers scrambled to meet EU (and Swiss) standards at the close of 2020, contributing to total plug-in registrations exceeding half a million units in the final quarter of the year. 2020 lived up to its claim of being the first genuine year where EVs moved from the slow hanging fruit lane to the mainstream, narrowly failing to miss a pre-COVID forecast of 770,000 units." says electrive: "Thanks to the newly phased-in EU fleet average CO2 targets, European volumes more than doubled last year from previous levels to 727,927 units of fully electric vehicles. PHEVs – a critical strategic tool in meeting the latest fleet average CO2 targets – saw volumes achieve 606,466 units. Combining both plug-in segments, West European sales surpass Chinese new plug-in passenger car registrations last year by 90,000 units to become the world’s largest region for externally rechargeable passenger cars. The start of production from Tesla’s European facility this year is likely to double regional Tesla volumes. Simultaneously, Volkswagen Group’s MEB ramp-up is expected to increase with an annual capacity of 330,000 units expected at the end of 2021. However, full annual capacity is not likely until 2022."
