Show #1024

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 17th March. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

GEELY IS SPENDING $4.6 BILLION ON A BATTERY PLANT

"Geely will pour nearly $5 billion into building an electric battery plant in China, as the country's top privately-owned carmaker moves more aggressively to bolster its electric vehicle ambitions in the world's largest market." says CNN.com: "The company will invest 30 billion yuan ($4.6 billion) into a battery factory in Ganzhou, a city in eastern China, according to a statement released Sunday by the local government. The factory will have a capacity of 42 gigawatt-hours per year, the statement said. That's similar in scale to the factories Germany's Volkswagen (VLKAF) said Monday it would build in Europe. Geely confirmed in a statement on its WeChat account that it signed the agreement over the weekend. It added that it had already been working with Farasis Energy, a local battery company."

BILL WOULD LET TESLA SELL DIRECTLY TO CONSUMERS IN TEXAS

"Automobile manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors, Honda and others are prohibited from selling directly to consumers in Texas, but Tesla soon might get a green light to do so. A proposed state law would carve out special treatment for certain makers of electric vehicles, allowing them to skirt strict Texas regulations requiring all auto sales to be funneled through third-party franchised dealerships." says Statesman.com: "Tesla — which is building a $1 billion-plus factory in southeastern Travis County that's expected to open late this year — is the biggest-name potential beneficiary of the special treatment, although it also would be a boon to growing numbers of lesser-known electric-vehicle makers that are following similar business models. [Tesla] foregoes third-party franchised dealerships and instead sells directly to consumers over the internet, a sales strategy that doesn't comply with the Texas regulations. It has fought for years to get the rules changed, but without success so far. In the past, however, Tesla hasn't been in the midst of building a major manufacturing facility here that's expected to employ 5,000 people and spark significant amounts of follow-on investment."

FORD TRANSIT CUSTOM ALL-ELECTRIC COMING IN 2023

Ford today confirmed that the next generation Ford Transit Custom range will include an all-electric model in addition to plug-in hybrid, mild hybrid and conventional engine variants.

The new Custom range – which includes the Transit Custom van and Tourneo Custom people mover – goes into production in the first half of 2023, with all-electric versions of both models part of the most extensive Transit Custom range ever offered to European customers.

Ford said in February that its entire commercial vehicle range will be zero-emissions capable, all-electric or plug-in hybrid, by 2024, with two-thirds of Ford’s commercial vehicle sales expected to be all-electric or plug-in hybrid by 2030.

TRITIUM LAUNCHES SOFTWARE UPDATE TO UNLOCK PLUG & CHARGE

Coming off a year that proved to be pivotal for the electric mobility industry, Tritium has launched a new software update for their RT50 DC fast chargers, enabling Plug and Charge technology globally. The update allows an electric vehicle (EV) that supports Plug and Charge and Tritium’s RT50 chargers to communicate seamlessly and authorize payments directly from the driver’s account without needing a card or RFID tag.

Plug and Charge technology promises to reshape the customer experience for the driver and enable the once-siloed approach to charging payments to be broken down, giving the most convenient experience for the EV driver.

PORSCHE BETS ON SILICON AND PREMIUM HIGH POWER CHARGING AREAS FOR EVS

"If Volkswagen wants to focus on scale and cost with its unified cell, that’s not the main concern Porsche has. The premium German carmaker will benefit from Volkswagen’s platform for cells, but its customers are more worried about high performance. This is why the company is betting on silicon of the anodes and also planning to build high power charging areas for its EVs." accordnig to InsideEVs: "Oliver Blume talked about these plans at the Volkswagen Power Day. Silicon provides big advantages over graphite, such as the capacity to store ten times more lithium-ions, much lower lithium plating tendency, and the possibility to use thinner layers of the material, which reduces weight at the same time it lowers internal resistance. These state-of-the-art cells would also have a goal to be 30 percent lighter, present 25 percent less internal resistance, and 40 percent more recuperation performance."

PORSCHE FOLLOWS TESLA’S SUPERCHARGER LEAD WITH ITS OWN PRIVATE CHARGING NETWORK

"In a move similar to Tesla’s Supercharger network, Porsche announced that it will build its own proprietary charging network for its customers." says electrek: "Now Porsche is following Tesla’s lead and announcing its own network to complement one of those third-party networks, Ionity, in Europe: Porsche is planning its own fast-charging stations along the most important European major highways and motorways. These will offer customers a high-quality, brand-appropriate charging experience while complementing the Ionity network. A unique design will showcase the special character of the Porsche fast-charging stations to the outside world. The German automaker says that each station will have “between six and 12 charging points with a charging capacity of 350 kW and more.”"

CEO Oliver Blume said: "“An important prerequisite for electromobility is fast and convenient charging,” says Blume. “That is why we are currently working on the details of a concept for our own fast-charging stations. We will select attractive locations for these in order to offer our customers the most comfortable and fastest long-distance travel experience possible.”"

TESLA BATTERY-SUPPLIER PANASONIC THINKS IT'S TIME IT STARTED SEEING OTHER PEOPLE

"Panasonic has supplied Tesla’s batteries as far back as the carmaker’s plucky startup days, but the two companies’ relationship is changing and Tesla wants to rely less on Panasonic. Now, Panasonic has announced the same." said Jalopnik: "Kazuhiro Tsuga, Panasonic’s upcoming chairman and ex-CEO, told the Financial Times (FT) that his company wants to supply more carmakers with batteries because Panasonic is evolving. Tsuga also acknowledged during the interview that Panasonic’s choice to produce batteries for Tesla has left them at a slight disadvantage because its batteries are not compatible with other EVs"
