Show #1026
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 19th March. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
RIVIAN TO INSTALL MORE THAN 10,000 EV CHARGERS BY END OF 2023
"Rivian, the EV startup backed by Amazon, Cox Automotive and T. Rowe Price, plans to install more than 10,000 chargers by the end of 2023. The network will have a dual purpose: quickly power its electric vehicle models with fast chargers installed along highways and provide Level 2 chargers at further afield locations next to parks, trailheads and other adventurous destinations." says TechCrunch: "The company said Thursday that its so-called Rivian Adventure Network will include more than 3,500 DC fast chargers at over 600 sites, which will only be accessible to owners of its electric vehicles."
"While Adventure Network of chargers will be solely for Rivian owners, the company also plans a second network of stations dubbed Waypoints, which will be available to other EV drivers. These will number over 10,000 and will be installed through 2023. The first batch will go to Colorado's 42 state parks, each getting two Waypoints each. " according to Autoweek: "The Waypoints will feature only the J1772 plugs and offer a charging speed of 11.5 kW, so these won't be as quick as the DC fast chargers. Rivian's two-tier plan of charging networks represent a serious step for the company, just months ahead of the market launch of its first two vehicles, and unlike Tesla's network, only a part of it will be exclusive to Rivian owners."
"Rivian owners will need to do is pull up and plug in. No membership cards or anything like that. The first stations will support 200 kilowatts of juice to start, but Rivian plans to amp things up with 300 kW and beyond after 2023. " reports CNET: "R1T pickup and R1S SUV owners will fill their battery packs with 140 miles of range in just 20 minutes, the company promised. Like the Adventure Network, Rivian owners will be able to charge their cars automatically by simply pulling up and plugging in. The public will need to jump through a couple of hoops, comparatively, though the company didn't go into detail about the process."
Let's say they started installing on April 1st - no joke. That's 33 months. To install 3,500 DC chargers at 600 sites. That's 18 sites a month, from today. Working days? That's a site A DAY. Is it going to happen? You decide.

UK FURTHER CUTS DOWN EV SUBSIDIES
"The Plug-in Car Grant for pure electric cars has been reduced from £3,000 to £2,500, with the list price cap also reduced from £50,000 to £35,000. The changes are effective immediately from today (18 March 2021)." reports Ricahrd Aucock at Motoring Research: "These measures have been taken to ensure the funding lasts longer, says the government. The £50,000 price cap has been lowered to £35,000 because higher-priced vehicles are ‘typically bought by drivers who can afford to switch without a subsidy from taxpayers’. Cars now excluded include the Tesla Model 3, as driven by transport secretary Grant Shapps. Several times last year, the Model 3 was Britain’s best-selling car in the monthly registration rankings."
SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: "“New battery electric technology is more expensive than conventional engines and incentives are essential in making these vehicles affordable to the customer. Cutting the grant and eligibility moves the UK even further behind other markets, which are increasing their support, making it yet more difficult for the UK to get sufficient supply. This sends the wrong message to the consumer, especially private customers, and to an industry challenged to meet the government’s ambition to be a world leader in the transition to zero emission mobility.”"
Ford of Britain Chairman Graham Hoare: “disappointing and is not conducive to supporting the zero emissions future we all desire.”
The British government states that the number of available electric car models with a price below 35,000 pounds has increased by almost 50 per cent since 2019. So, the MGZS EV. Just one of the Hyundai Kona models, the bottom spec small battery version. No Tesla. Only the bottom spec VW ID.3 Pro with 263 mile range.
Vans are harder hit.
@SteveFowler, Editor in Chief of AutoExpress: "Government kicks car industry and car buyers squarely in the guts. Slashes plug-in grant and lowers limit. LUDICROUS. So angry. Thought it was April 1. Bad, bad move."
I tweeted: "Anyone fancy buying a @Tesla in the next 12 days? They'll cover the £2500 car grant which no longer applies as they're all over £35k RRP"
Heres an example of a family car caught out by the overnight change. Note:

AMAZON'S NEW ELECTRIC VANS BUILT BY EV STARTUP RIVIAN ARE BEING DEPLOYED IN SAN FRANCISCO
"Online retailer Amazon is now testing its new fully-electric delivery vans in San Francisco. The vans were built by Amazon-backed electric vehicle startup Rivian. The deployment is San Francisco is the second West Coast city that Amazon is testing its new delivery vehicles in, following the first deployments in Los Angeles in early February. " says FutureCar: "The current fleet of vehicles was built at Rivian's studio in Plymouth, Michigan, and each can drive up to 150 miles on a single charge."
AUDI'S 2023 Q6 E-TRON EV WILL USE TECHNOLOGY CO-DEVELOPED WITH PORSCHE
"Audi announced it will fill the gap between the upcoming Q4 E-Tron and the E-Tron already in showrooms with a model called Q6 E-Tron. Due out in 2022, the crossover will share its underpinnings with the next Porsche Macan." according to Autoblog "Audi will position the Q6 E-Tron as electric alternative to the Q5. Don't let the common bones (and some of the inaccurate reports floating around the web) fool you: the Q6 E-Tron will not be merely a re-badged Macan. It will ride on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture that Audi and Porsche co-developed to underpin a range of relatively big luxury EVs. Like the Taycan and the Taycan Cross Turismo, both crossovers will feature 800-volt technology that promises to significantly reduce charging times."
