FIRST LOOK AT THE NEW MINI COOPER EV
" the Mini Cooper SE is the only EV in Mini's model lineup, delivering an EPA-rated range of 110 miles courtesy of an electric motor producing 181 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. When the next-generation Mini Cooper arrives, it will be offered as a fully-electric hatchback, but a combustion-powered model will be sold alongside it. For the first time, our spy photographers have caught Mini testing the next-generation Cooper EV in the snow." says CarBuzz: "Development is clearly at an early stage as the prototype is heavily camouflaged and fitted with fake headlight rings, taillights, and a Cooper S-style hood air intake. Despite Mini's efforts to mask the car's identity, the prominent "electric test vehicle" sticker is an obvious giveaway. a close-up of the driver's side window reveals the prototype is fitted with a familiar-looking curved dual-screen display. This mirrors the dashboard layout of current BMW models, which may upset some Mini fans. It will be a radical departure from the current Cooper's funky cabin that's dominated by circular elements. The next-generation Mini Cooper is expected to arrive in 2023 and will it will be joined by two electric crossovers in the same year."

JEEP WRANGLER 4XE OFFICIAL EPA RANGE
"The 2021 Wrangler 4xe Plug-In Hybrid Has Been Rated By The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as capable of covering 21 miles (34 km) in zero-emissions mode." according to AutoEvolution: "That doesn’t compare favorably to Jeep’s initial estimates of a fully electric range of 25 miles (40 km). Additionally, it’s not a great number considering the Wrangler 4xe’s rather large battery pack of 17 kWh"
Erm...1.2 miles / kWh?
EVS ARE NEW IPHONE
"Electric vehicles are the "next big product" for iPhone assembler Foxconn and are "very, very likely" to grow into a bigger business than electronics, Chairman and CEO Young Liu said." repotrs Nikkei Asia: "The Taiwanese group is weighing plans to produce electric vehicles in China and the U.S., entering a fast-growing segment of the auto market where tech players can compete with traditional automakers. Foxconn, which trades as Hon Hai Precision Industry, first revealed plans to assemble electric vehicles for automakers last October. The company has set a goal of capturing a 10% share of the global EV market between 2025 and 2027."
They say: "We think that regionalized or decentralized production will be the way to go for EVs. Automobiles are very big and difficult to ship. The shipping costs are much higher than shipping a cellphone."
So Byton will be first. Then Fisker.
HUAWEI FILES TWO PATENTS RELATED TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES
"Hhinese tech giant Huawei is planning to make electric cars under its own brand, and now a new report has claimed that the company has filed a couple of patents relating to the same." reports Ecoinomic Times: "Huawei is in talks with state-owned Changan Automobile and other automakers to use their car plants to make its electric vehicles (EVs). Huawei is also in discussions with Beijing-backed BAIC Group's BluePark New Energy Technology to manufacture its EVs. In addition, another Chinese tech company Xiaomi is also planning to build its own car and is considering it as a strategic decision, but specific details and the path it aims to take are yet to be determined."
CHINESE COMPANY IS BUILDING THE NEXT GIGAFACTORY IN GERMANY
"The Tesla Gigafactory in Grünheide near Berlin is not yet completely finished when another international company announced the construction of a Gigafactory on German land. The Chinese battery company Svolt Energy wants to build a gigafactory in Saarland." writes de24.news: "Not far from this actual battery production – which, according to media reports, should start as early as 2023 – assembly will then take place in Heusweiler, less than 25 kilometers away. The company announced this together with the Saarland Prime Minister Tobias Hans at a press conference. The factory is to be built on an area of 840,000 square meters and provide annual capacities of 24 gigawatt hours – enough for 300,000 to 500,000 e-cars."

TESLA TO USE LOCAL INLAND PORT TO SHIP FROM GIGA BERLIN
"there are already talks of how Tesla will ship its electric vehicles and one idea is that Tesla could give the port in Königs Wusterhausen new momentum, reports RBB. The port in Königs Wusterhausen is to handle all deliveries for Tesla from summer. To this end, the port area is to be expanded by 25,000 square meters. This is a godsend for the port and the region, because four years ago it was on the verge of collapse." says Torquenews: "The inland port has both a rail connection and a connection to the A10. Initially, ten Tesla containers will be handled here every day, later 100 per day."

PORSCHE’S FUTURE EV BATTERIES WILL BE DEVELOPED ON THE RACE TRACK
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said at VW Power Day: "The Le Mans-winning Porsche 919 provided a crucial basis for development of the all-electric Porsche Taycan. For the Taycan, we adopted the innovative 800-volt technology as well as the cooling concepts and virtual development methods, from our 919 LMP1 race car. This is all superior technology that successfully differentiates Porsche from the competition." "
But what does that mean? Because they only race in Formula E, but are leaving this year, and any the battery part of that series is spec and supllied by athird party to every team. So they ouldn't have been talking about FE. Where ELSE are Audi racing? Are they going back to LeMans or maybe Formula 1?
The Drive reached out to Porsche to ask where this left its Formula E entry, to which a spokesperson replied: "VW Group's Power Day was about innovative high-performance cell chemistry which is intended for future use in high-performance, limited-production-run cars and in customer motorsport."
So Porsche want to develop high performance batteries of supercars and race cars, what what race cars?
ANALYST PREDICTS £18K TESLA COULD BRING ABOUT EVEN CHEAPER £5K EV
" As companies gain experience designing and manufacturing EVs and build them in higher volumes, analysts predict that the number of parts needed for an entire vehicle could at some point in the future drop from the 10,000 or so mark today to around 100 (or even less). But with mounting pressure by governments who now favour electric vehicles over ICE, manufacturers may not have a choice and focus more and more on EVs. In fact, the Morgan Stanley analysts say" reports Motor1: " The cheapest ‘real car’ with an electric powertrain that you can currently order in Europe is the Dacia Spring, a subcompact model that costs €16,990 (which equates to approximately £14,550) in France"

CLASSIC MGS GET BACK ON THE OPEN ROAD WITH ELECTRIC MAKEOVER
"A swathe of companies are now ripping out classic cars’ petrol engines and replacing them with battery systems, or even building all-new replicas of historic vehicles with the latest electric powertrains. One of the newest entrants to this burgeoning market is Staffordshire-based RBW, which takes original MG designs to build entirely new cars fitted with the company's own electric drivetrain." writes Telegraph.co.uk: "RBW is now road-testing a pre-production model of its electric Roadster which is limited to an 80mph top speed, can hit 60mph in nine seconds and has a 160-mile range. However, the new Roadster is not as true to the original MGs of the 1960s promise of driving thrills on a budget - RBW's car costs approaching £100,000 "

CONTACTLESS PAYMENT PREFERRED
"NetX, the project behind a three-socket EV charger, has revealed the results of its charging survey. The Innovate UK-backed project asked both EV and non-EV drivers about how easy it is to charge an electric car, one of the biggest questions for prospective EV drivers according to the study." says CitiMagazine: "For payment solutions, 85% of people said they wanted to pay for public charging by contactless debit or credit card payment or automatic payment on plug in. Only 10% wanted to pay by smartphone app and less than 5% wanted to pay by RFID card or tag."
BILL GATES ON THE URGENT SHIFT TO EVS
"Batteries are getting better, but it’s hard to see how they’ll ever close this gap. If we’re lucky, they may become up to three times as energy dense as they are now, in which case they would still be 12 times less energy dense than gas or jet fuel. Our best bet is to replace jet fuel with electrofuels and advanced biofuels, but there are hefty premiums that come with them. The same goes for cargo ships. The best conventional container ships can carry 200 times more cargo than either of the two electric ships now in operation, and they can run routes that are 400 times longer. Those are major advantages for ships that need to cross entire oceans. There are four ways to cut down on emissions from transportation. One is to do less of it. Another way to cut down on emissions is to use fewer carbon-intensive materials in making cars to begin with. The third way to cut down on emissions is to use fuels more efficiently. the fourth — and most effective — way we can move toward zero emissions from transportation: switching to electric vehicles and alternative fuels. We can speed up the transition by adopting policies that encourage people to buy EVs and creating a network of charging stations so they’re more practical to own. Nationwide commitments can help drive up the supply of cars and drive down their cost."
