Show #1040

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 2nd April. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA DELIVERS RECORD CARS IN Q1 2021

From Tesla: "In the first quarter, we produced just over 180,000 vehicles and delivered nearly 185,000 vehicles. We are encouraged by the strong reception of the Model Y in China and are quickly progressing to full production capacity. The new Model S and Model X have also been exceptionally well received, with the new equipment installed and tested in Q1 and we are in the early stages of ramping production."”

Tesla has broken their production record, and whilst it might only be by 600 vehicles, it still counts!

"Tesla announced new record deliveries of 184,800 electric cars during the first quarter of 2021. Q1 of any year but especially this Covid-year is traditionally a slow quarter for car companies which makes it even more remarkable." says electrive.com: "Tesla delivered 184,800 electric cars to customers from January to March 2021, including 182,780 Model 3 and Model Y and 2,020 Model S and Model X. The previous record quarter was Q4/2020 with 180,570 deliveries. For production, Tesla produced a total of 180,338 vehicles in the first quarter of 2021. This, too, is a new record, besting the 179,757 units made in Q4/2020. What is more, this time, production was made up of exclusively Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla had put the Model S and X production on hold this year to prepare the lines for the revised versions presented at the end of January."

The Wall Street Journal noted the increasing EV market: "Stiffer competition from the likes of Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG , whose all-electric vehicles are making inroads in key markets, is increasing pressure on Tesla to accelerate production growth and bring new models to market.

"The company’s sales numbers, which cover the entire world, come a day after General Motors and Ford Motor reported that their U.S. sales were up modestly. Tesla does not break out its sales by region and a lot of its recent growth has been in China, where electric cars make up a much larger share of the auto market than in the United States." said The New York Times: "The first-quarter sales numbers could lift Tesla shares, which have lost more than a quarter of their value since January when they hit a high of about $900. The impact won’t be known until next week, however, because the stock market is closed in observance of Good Friday. On Thursday, Tesla’s stock fell about 1 percent, closing at $661.75. Analysts were surprised by the jump in sales. Most had been expecting deliveries of about 172,000 vehicles."

I thought the angle from CNN focused on the negative: "Tesla has not built any of its two most expensive cars -- the Model S and Model X -- so far this year. Tesla said it is ramping up production of the Models S and X, which were recently updated with redesigns. But automakers come out with updated versions of vehicles all the time without shutting production for three months. And this shutdown appears to be different from what CEO Elon Musk said on Jan. 27, when he discussed Tesla's fourth quarter earnings with investors and analysts. Tesla is facing more competition for its less expensive models as traditional automakers offer their own new electric vehicles. General Motors (GM) just unveiled a new SUV version of its Chevrolet Bolt, its only US EV for sale right now. And Volkswagen (VLKAF) has overtaken Tesla in sales of EVs in many European market."

Elon Musk: "We're super excited to announce the new Model S and Model X ... are in production now and will be delivered in February. The Model S... we're actually in production now. The Model X a little later."

and The South China Morning Post has some regional numbers even thought Tesla doesn't publish these: In the first two months, the US carmaker delivered 33,802 vehicles, easily beating its Chinese rivals. In 2020, Tesla, banking on its Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, delivered about 140,000 Model 3s to customers in mainland China, accounting for about an eighth of the country’s total EV deliveries, which hit 1.17 million units."

TESLA VS. NIO VS. XPENG VS. LI AUTO — HOW Q1 DELIVERIES STACKED UP

"The quarterly scorecards for the electric vehicle manufacturers are in and despite industry-wide constraints and macroeconomic handicaps, performances for the month of March, as well as the first quarter, have been strong. Here's a comparative take on first-quarter deliveries of Tesla, Li Auto, Xpeng and NIO." reports benzinga.com: "Tesla delivered 184,800 vehicles in the first quarter, with 99% of these being Model 3/Y vehicles. Nio's first-quarter deliveries jumped 423% year-over-year to 20,060 vehicles. The company currently sells three SUV models, namely ES6, ES8 and EC6. XPeng, which has a SUV named G3 and a sedan named P7, said its first-quarter deliveries totaled 13,340. Li Auto, which sells Li ONE SUV, reported deliveries of 12,579 for the first quarter."

RIVIAN'S EV SERVICE PLANS INCLUDE REMOTE DIAGNOSIS AND ON-SITE REPAIRS

"Rivian is trying to challenge Tesla on a number of fronts, and that now includes how it will fix and support your electric vehicle. The startup has outlined its service strategy, and it's joining Tesla in eschewing the usual repair shops — and in some cases, it might not need to see you at all. It's promising a Remote Care system that will let it "proactively" spot problems. And like its competitor, Rivian will send service vans to fix most issues." reports engadget: "The company will haul your EV to one of 40-plus service centers if there's a more substantial problem. And if it's 'just' a fender bender, a network of Rivian-owned and certified locations will fix exterior damage. However, execution may be vital. Tesla has faced criticism for a service system where you might wait weeks or even months for some fixes. Rivian may win over customers if it develops a reputation for timely repairs, but it could catch similar flak if its customers endure similar delays."

WOULD YOU BUY APTERA’S THREE-WHEELED EV IF IT HAD A RANGE OF 1,000 MILES?

"Since December, a video about an electric vehicle called the Aptera has racked up over 1.2 million views on YouTube. And no wonder — not only is the EV a three-wheeler straight out of a sci-fi movie, but it promises performance straight out of Elon Musk’s wet dreams: range of 1,000 miles on a single charge and the ability to recharge the battery from solar panels integrated into the body." says InsideHook: "The current vehicle they’re promoting is classified as a motorcycle or auto-cycle, similar to the Polaris Slingshot. It’s a two-seater with a Tesla-like touchscreen, solar panels for charging (though it charges faster via a traditional plug), in-wheel motors and a price ranging from about $26,000 to $50,000, depending on if you want that coveted 1,000-mile battery range."

Efficiency in the region of 10 miles per kWh.
