Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 7th April. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
GM ANNOUNCES ELECTRIC CHEVY SILVERADO PICKUP
"General Motors announced Tuesday that it will produce an all-electric Chevrolet Silverado truck, with an estimated driving range of more than 400 miles on a single charge." reports CNN Business: "The truck will join an increasingly crowded field of competitors from established automakers like Ford (F), which has already said it will make electric version of its F-Series pickup, as well as startups, such as Tesla (TSLA), with the Cybertruck, and Rivian, with the R1T. The new electric Silverado will not be a modified version of the gasoline- or diesel-powered truck equipped with batteries and electric motors. Instead, it will be engineered from the beginning as an electric-only truck, GM said, using the same Ultium electric vehicle engineering that will underlie many of the automaker's future electric vehicles, including the GMC Hummer EV models and the Cadllac Lyriq SUV."
"The company did not immediately say when the electric Silverado will go on sale, but GM president Mark Reuss said at an event on Tuesday that the company will also make commercial fleet-focused versions of the truck. GM has been teasing an electric Silverado for months now. It previously said it may not release a pickup EV until mid-decade and hadn’t officially announced the truck was coming until Tuesday." according to The Verge: "The electric Silverado will be made at “Factory Zero,” the recently rebranded Detroit-Hamtramck plant dedicated to EVs and AVs that GM is currently retooling at a cost of more than $2 billion. It’s the same plant where GM will build the all-electric Hummer SUV and Hummer pickup. The Silverado is so important to GM that it’s currently selling versions of the truck that are missing a microchip that helps improve fuel economy thanks to the global semiconductor shortage."
"Shares of General Motors closed at a new record Tuesday after the automaker confirmed plans to produce an all-electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup at an assembly plant for EVs that’s under construction in Detroit. The electric Silverado is part of a previously announced $2.2 billion investment in the plant to produce an array of its next-generation EVs" says CNBC: "he new vehicles are part of GM’s plan to release 30 new EVs globally by 2025 under a $27 billion investment in electric and autonomous vehicles during that time frame. The company plans to sell at least 1 million EVs annually by then."

DID POLESTAR JUST TEASE A HOTTER VERSION OF THE POLESTAR 2 EV?
"Polestar is Volvo’s sporty and electrified arm and it currently has one pure-EV in its lineup, the Polestar 2. It’s about as close a rival as we currently have to the Tesla Model 3, although it’s not quite as quick as the Model 3 Performance. Well, that could change with a more aggressive performance version of the Polestar 2, which appears to be what the CEO of Polestar seems to have hinted at via a couple of recent Instagram posts." says InsideEVs; "Thomas Ingenlath posted two photos of what appears to be a sportier version of the Polestar 2 EV. How can we tell? Well, the car clearly sits lower on its suspension and it looks like it’s riding on wheels borrowed from the more exclusive Polestar 1 (albeit completely blacked out). The front bumper is also different - the lower part is painted in the body color. The plastic cladding around the wheel arches is also finished in the body color and with the bumper, the black wheels and the visibly lower ride height, it looks like a far more focused vehicle than the standard car".

VOLKSWAGEN MEB-BASED ELECTRIC CARS WILL BE V2G FROM 2022
"During its Power Day in March, Volkswagen said it was moving ahead with vehicle to grid (V2G) bi-directional battery charging technology. Now it’s official. In an interview with Handelsblatt this week, Volkswagen board member Thomas Ulbricht said, “The test vehicles are running. We are in the last [phases] with the preparations.”" reports CleanTechnica: "Beginning in January, 2022, every electric car from the Volkswagen Group that uses the MEB electrical platform — that includes cars from Audi, Skoda, and Seat-Cupra — will be able to not only charge from the electrical grid but also able to return electricity to the grid on demand. Ulbricht explains that expanded business models relating to the battery are just one component of a much more fundamental change in the automotive industry that will be triggered by digitization. Volkswagen sees itself monetizing all that stored electricity by making it available to utility companies and grid operators. Some of the income would go to the owners of the cars. Handelsblatt says in the final analysis, automakers may have the upper hand. They provide the warranty coverage for those batteries and can adjust their warranties to favor the use of their own networks."
SALES OF NISSAN E-POWER ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES IN JAPAN SURPASSES 500,000
"Nissan announced that cumulative sales of vehicles with its e-POWER electrified powertrain (earlier post) surpassed 500,000 units at the end of March. The e-POWER system uses a highly efficient gasoline engine to generate electricity for the electric motor that propels the vehicle. For customers, this delivers EV-like excitement, quietness and smooth acceleration, but with the confidence and convenience that comes with a fuel tank, and without the need to plug in to recharge." according to Green Car Congress: "e-POWER made its debut in Japan on the Note compact car in November 2016. In February 2021, the all-new Nissan Qashqai recently debuted in the European market with an e-POWER model announced following the mild-hybrid model, marking the first offering of e-POWER in the continent."

NISSAN CUTS COST OF LEAF TO QUALIFY FOR PLUG-IN GRANT
"Price reductions for the 40kWh and 62kWh versions of the Nissan Leaf have been announced to ensure the electric vehicle (EV) qualifies for the plug-in car grant. All grades of the Nissan Leaf and both battery capacities (40kWh and 62kWh) are now eligible for the revised grant, with pricing now starting from £25,995 OTR (including the Government grant of £2,500)." writes Fleet News: "Peugeot revised pricing for all e-2008 models and enhanced deposit contributions for the e-208 range in response to the grant cut. Peugeot’s price cut came after Vauxhall reduced the prices of its Mokka-e and Vivaro-e so that all its electric models are eligible for the revised plug-in grant. Fellow Stellantis brand Citroen confirmed price cuts to its new e-C4 model following the changes to the grant. BMW also announced it was cutting the cost of its i3 electric car last week, to ensure customers can still take advantage of the Government’s plug-in grant."
UK EV REGISTRATIONS CONTINUE THEIR RISE
UK new car registrations ‘grow’ for first time since August – up 11.5% – but remain -36.9% adrift of 10-year March average.
The shift to new technologies is continuing, however, with plug-in vehicle demand reaching its highest ever volume. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) took a combined market share of 13.9%, up from 7.3% last year as the number of models available to customers increased from 72 to 116. Registrations of BEVs increased by 88.2% to 22,003 units, while PHEVs rose by 152.2% to 17,330. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) also rose 42.0% to reach 21,599 registrations.
US ELECTRIC CAR INCENTIVE IS RUMORED TO INCREASE TO $10,000 IN PROGRAM REFORM
"The US federal government is currently looking to include a ramp-up of investments in electrification as part of a massive infrastructure bill. It’s unclear how the money will be spent, but we are now hearing that the electric car tax credit could increase to $10,000." says electrek:" Now Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, one of the top-rated analysts that follow the electric vehicle market, says that the rumor in Washington is that the new incentive will be $10,000"
