Show #1059
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 21st April. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
LYRIQ EV KILLS COMBUSTION SIBLINGS AT CADILLAC
"Strikingly similar to the concept revealed last year, the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq will arrive in the first half of 2022, priced starting just under $60,000. Reservations open in September." repotrs Car & Driver: "As part of the announcement, Cadillac vice-president Rory Harvey said we will not get another new Cadillac model with an internal-combustion engine. It's all electric from now on, in North America at least. More than 300 miles of range on a full charge, a 19.2-kW onboard charger, Super Cruise, and a 33-inch screen put the Lyriq right in line with other upscale EVs being offered in the coming years."
"Cadillac is expected to lead GM’s plans to exclusively offer EVs by 2035. That includes at least 30 new EVs by 2025 under a $27 billion investment plan in electric and autonomous vehicles during that time frame." says CNBC.com: "The Lyriq, starting at $59,990, will be among the first to market with GM’s next-generation EV platform and battery system, known as Ultium. The vehicle will only come in one configuration for the first model year to simplify production. The Lyriq’s interior, like the show car, also features a curved 33-inch-diagonal advanced LED screen the spans the entire viewing area of the driver."
"Reservations for the two-row, five-passenger crossover with the rakish rear window will open in September and production begins at the Spring Hill plant in Tennessee in the first quarter of 2022. Oh, and the attainable pricing rings in below the $71,000 Jaguar I-Pace and the $67,000 Audi E-Tron." says Motortrend: "The rear-wheel-drive Lyriq will deliver 340 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque (Cadillac is—weirdly—badging new models based on torque measured in newton-meters; in American figures that's 325 lb-ft) and is expected to have a range of more than 300 miles on a single charge. With fast charging, the Lyriq can add about 76 miles of driving range in 10 minutes. The first-release models will come with a standard 19.2-kW Level 2 charging module. The Lyriq has one-pedal driving and...Like all Cadillacs going forward, the Lyriq has available Super Cruise"

LARGEST ELECTRIC VEHICLE ORDER FOR VOLVO TRUCKS FROM QCD
"Volvo Truck’s largest electric vehicle order has been placed in California. Quality Custom Distribution (QCD), a national food service logistics supplier, has ordered the vehicles. The 14 VNR Electric models trucks will be deployed in the operator’s Southern California last-mile delivery routes." ays Trucking Mag: "Volvo Trucks began taking customer orders for its VNR Electric model last December. Following the truck’s introduction, it has multiple customer deliveries scheduled throughout 2021."

AUSTRALIANS SAY GOVERNMENT POLICY BLOCKS EV SUPPLY
"Surveys show Australians want to buy electric vehicles (EVs), but they continue to languish at less than 1 per cent of new car sales. What's going on is complex and takes us down a twisting path of carbon targets, "super credits" and other matters that people outside the auto industry generally don't pay much attention to. At the end of this path, however, is an obvious fact: EVs that sell well in Europe, the US and UK are simply not available in Australia." reports abc.net.au: "Volkswagen, which is on track to become the world's largest EV maker, sold 212,000 EVs worldwide in 2020. Not one of those was in Australia. The top-selling electric car in Europe in 2020, the Volkswagen ID.3, won't be launched in Australia until at least 2023, its maker says. The number of models that are made available directly correlates to the uptake of EVs, according to modelling conducted by Energeia for the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) in 2016. There are no national incentives directly aimed at making EVs more affordable. Volkswagen says it will ship EVs to Australia if the government introduces EU-style mandatory carbon targets backed up with fines. This would solve the supply shortage by giving car makers a greater financial incentive to ship EVs to Australia"
OXIS ENERGY SET TO MAKE SOLID-STATE LITHIUM-SULFUR CELL
OXIS Energy will deploy Solid-State Lithium Sulfur (Li-S) cell and battery systems to its clients and partners worldwide by Autumn 2021 for use in trials, proof of concept and demonstrator battery systems for the Aviation, Marine, Defence and Heavy electric Vehicles (HEV) sectors.
OXIS has been collaborating with European manufacturers on the development of Solid-State Li-S technology for almost 4 years. As a result of a technological breakthrough three years ago, OXIS has filed 9 new families of patents to protect both Quasi and Solid-State Intellectual Property Rights.
The attraction of OXIS cells for vehicle markets, is that on average, the battery systems are up to 60% lighter than conventional Li-ion battery systems.
OXIS will commercialize the mass production of the chemical composition of its Quasi and Solid-State cell at its Welsh Plant in Port Talbot, UK. The cells will be mass produced at its cell manufacturing plant in Juiz de Fora, in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Unlike Li-ion, the cells chemistry manufactured by OXIS Energy does not contain cobalt, manganese, nickel or copper, all of which present serious supply chain and environmental concerns.

BYD INTRODUCES 800V E-PLATFORM 3.0
"BYD has announced at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show an all-new e-platform 3.0 for the next-generation electric vehicles. YD adds that the e-platform 3.0 will continue to be open to the industry - other brands. So far, BYD's solutions were used by Mercedes-Benz (Denza joint venture), Toyota, and Didi Chuxing. BYD underlines that the new platform not only further integrates and standardizes core components, "but also builds a brand-new body structure, digital and electrical architecture, and a revamped BYD vehicle operating system." writes InsideEVs: "In the e-platform 3.0 we can find affordable BYD Blade Battery LFP chemistry in cell-to-pack (CTP) system (without modules), which is integrated into the vehicle structure. The largest battery pack options should translate into a range of up to 600 miles (965 km) NEDC, probably closer to 400-450 miles (644-724 km) in the real world. The battery system will be 800 V, which will increase the overall efficiency, as well as allow to fast charge very quickly: 5 minutes to replenish 90 miles (145 km) at the peak."

FIA ELECTRIC GT NEW TECH REGULATIONS
"The international motorsport body today introduced the specs of its GT race series that includes a crazy-fast but also crazy-necessary charging rate of 700kW. The Federation International de l’Automobile (FIA) today released the new regulations that can be seen below and include up to four electric motors, 87kWh total battery capacity, 430kW max power, estimated 2.4 second 0-100kph time, and top speed of 300kph (186mph) as well as 700kW regen and max charging speed." says electrek: " At 700kW, that is a 4.5 minute pit stop. While that doesn’t compare to the almost instantaneous F1 pit stops and car swaps that we saw in Formula E, the technology does bode well for the auto industry that the FIA is feeding. The all-electric GT series hopes to trickle technology into road cars, and the 700kW fast-charging technology would be game over for gasoline at the gas station, charging 70kW of battery in just six minutes. That’s barely enough time for a bathroom break."
