Group Therapy: The Gender Reveal

Friends registered for the gender-reveal party but they don't think they need to bring a gift for the reveal (save it for the baby shower)... but are worried if they show up empty handed, it'll be bad news. We have NO EXPERIENCE with this, so what's the proper protocol here?
