The Galápagos Affair | Ecuador

Episode 117,   Nov 22, 2020, 08:30 PM

In the 1930s a handful of Europeans lived on an uninhabited island. When one crowned herself as Empress of the Galápagos, a storm erupted.

In 1929 an eccentric doctor, Friedrich Ritter and his mistress, Dore Strauch Koerwin, left Berlin to start a life on an uninhabited island in the Galápagos. They wrote articles about their life, surviving on nothing but hard work, philosophy and vegetables. Soon, more people followed to experience the same lifestyle. When a boisterous self-proclaimed Viennese baroness and her two lovers arrived on Floreana Island, tension rose. When she picked her favourite lover and crowned herself as Empress of the Galápagos, a storm erupted.
