On 27 August 1990 the BBC launched its fifth national radio station – Radio 5 - the first network addition since 1967, using the frequencies 693 and 909, formerly occupied by Radio 2.
Radio 5 carried sport, educational and children’s programmes.
In 1994 Radio 5 was replaced by Radio 5 Live, featuring news and sport.
