FULL: President Salva Kiir’s Independence Day message

President Salva Kiir has called for peaceful coexistence and unity among citizens and has assured the people of South Sudan that the country will not return to political conflict. 

 

In his Independence Day message aired on state media, President Kiir said previous year’s celebrations were disrupted by insecurity and elaborated that this year’s muted commemoration was due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

 

The President acknowledged the ongoing inter-communal conflict in parts of the country and said the government was employing a ‘multi-layered’ approach to bring the violence to an end.
