Who can afford to opt out

Season 1, Episode 53,   Jul 08, 2020, 02:26 AM

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.
This week, we open the show with the storylines of Mets summer camp—Yoenis Cespedes dingers, the very Metsy free agent additions, and the fact that very few Mets outside of Jacob deGrom have guaranteed contracts beyond 2020 and therefore the luxury of being able to opt out of the season. We also chat about the latest rumors about the sale of the team and the resurgence of a possible Steve Cohen deal.
Next, we talk about this issue of opting out more broadly across baseball and how it is a luxury afforded only to the few players who have already gotten paid, while the rest of the players are faced with the difficult choice between their health and their livelihoods. We also discuss MLB’s bungling of the health and safety protocols, leading to many teams having to shut down their workout...
