Ex ossibus - Padova subsumed
Jun 17, 2020, 08:57 AM
Padova lockdown sound reimagined by Peter Hodgkinson.
"The original sound recording seemed to contain 2 conflicting atmospheres, claustrophobia and openness. There are intimate street scenes and distant ambiance. There appears to be human interaction and machine sounds, traffic noise, ambulances, etc. The original transformed over the course of the duration and reached a loud finale.
"I took the approach to take the more subtle and obscure sounds and maximize on them.
"The composition was constructed of these samples. The sounds were cut up in SoundStudio and compiled. They were then loaded into 2 samplers-Native Instruments Kontakt and Logic X's ESX24. They were then allotted over a keyboard range and edited/played via Midi. I lay down sections of the original file on audio tracks and then played/recorded the samples with an Oxygen 25 keyboard.
"There were several retakes and editing using minimal FX-graphic equalization, minor reverb, stereo panning, and amplitude changes. Once the piece was constructed it went into post-production editing, small tweaks by granular synthesis to produce deep bass and the one beat. The whole track was bounced 3 times one "normal" mastering, one high-pass filtering and one low pass filtering-this is highly emphasized in the final mixdown to create unease and discomfort as befits the mood of the Pandemic.
"The title "Ex ossibus"-"from the bones" based on the reliquary of St. Anthony of Padua is contextually fitting I feel, the Subsumed is an ongoing sound series I am working on.
"Tech used-Apple MacBook Pro, Sound Studio, LogicX, Native Instruments, Protools, MacPod Granular Synthesis app, Eurorack mixer, Oxygen 25 keyboard M-Audio BX8 monitor speakers.
