Hyla Chrysoscelus

North Carolina, USA lockdown sound recorded by Angela Winter.

"Nighttime on a candlelit porch in North Carolina. My husband and I were talking over a chorus of frogs when suddenly we heard one unlike any we'd heard before.

"What was that strange sound? I recorded a bit of audio and titled it "Freaky Frogs Maybe Aliens," as I joked about UFOs coming to get us all, finally. A few minutes later, I sent the audio file to our friend, a herpetologist who works at the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. He replied, "Lovely! Hyla chrysoscelis. Same here :)" We texted a bit, sharing a moment of connection over the unexpected sound."
